6-DELR1O (TEXAS) NEWS-HERALD, Tuesday. July 21, 1970 Ortega Homers Win Area Title for Del Rio i i QinacVi Vi 1 Kail rv hom trv a no iv j- Rn tf IP PfiSS By CARLGUYS News-Herald Staff Little Al Lopez put the big britches on the Eagle Pass hitters and big Eddie Ortega knocked the pants off the visitor's pitching to give Del Rio the 1970 Area Little League championship Monday night in Pop Word Park. The Val Verde Stars, led by the pitching of their mini-mite and the long ball hitting of their husky left fielder, defeated Eagle Pass 74 to win the title. Lopez, the 4-4, 90-pound, right bander allowed only three hits to the normally potent Eagles. Ortega belted two tape-measure circuit smashes that accounted for four of Del Rio's runs.

Lopez used his bag of curves with an occasional fast ball to baffle the Eagle Pass hitters. Watch It! Before you get worked up into a foamy lather about Little League catching in a pressure-packed final game, take into consideration: No. 1 The fine little chunk er out there on the mound is putting everything on that old pelota he knows how to do. No. 2 The pitch is coming in there dipping and darting and not swift, straight and true like a couple of guys playing catch.

No. 3 There's a batter waving a club in front of you and an umpire crouched over your shoulder when the ball caroms off of your mitt to the screen. No. 4 Eleven jillion fans are screaming to tell you where the ball hid and you're doing your best to find it all by yourself. No.

5 A couple of runs score and it seems like the whole park is down on you, but then you glove a couple of high twisting foul balls and in the end your team wins and everything is rosy again. There probably isn't one guy in the entire park and its surroundings who could have done as well. And besides, the game is over and you are thinking about Thursday and Pleasanton. Hang in there. Fish Fry Bob Fitzsimmons of the Coyote Dusters Motorcycle Club will have proof that his mates can do something besides ride those cycles.

Members of the group have been fishing and on Friday, at 8 p.m., there'll be a big fish fry at Hiway 90 BBQ with the femme members of the group bringing side dishes. Fitz drew Alaska as his next assignment and since he was such an active Coyote Duster the club will fete him fare-welly. Hoffman at 298-3223, has the answers to questions regarding the fish fry if club women need to know what side dishes to bring. Ken called Ken Hildreth, president of the Val Verde Little League, dialed to say the Pleasanton Little League Park is on the northwest side of that city. Fans who expect to make the trip in support of the Val Verde Area champions need to go out Highway 90 East to a mile east of the Hondo city limits and turn south through Devine and into Pleasanton.

Game time is 8 p.m. and game night is Thursday, July 23. The Del Rio players '-will travel in private cars and Hildreth says everything; is all arranged with sufficient loot to feed the kids after the contest. This one is sudden-death all the way, as will be all other Little League playoff games from here on out. Concerned When the report of that commercial fishing bit on the Mexican side of Amistad Lake became known a lot of folks became concerned on both sides of Big Friendly.

Authorities in Ciudad Acuna are setting the deal right and only sport fishing will be tolerated in the international reservoir. Of course if there was a way to let them netters harvest all the gar and rough fish without molesting the game fish, the setup would be ideal. But trammel nets, small barrel nets and other types of fish traps imprison brother bass along with the other species so it is best that all sorts of illegal angling be prohibited. P.S. When we were hawking "things to do in Del Rio" a column ago we did not mention the Miss Del Rio Beauty Pageant which goes Tuesday in the Civic Center.

This is an annual classic that judges talent, charm, poise and pulchritude and decides the Miss Dei Rio for another year. The while bit is a wonderful way to recognize the city's lovlies and to aid the Val Verde County and Laughlin AFB Little Leagues. Miss Little League will also be introduced at the pageant. Big Game If you think that the professional rodeo sport is not big time, take a gander at this. There'll be 666 contestants competing in 794 events at the 74th annual Cheyenne Frontier Days with the finals for Sunday, July 26, after six days of rodeoing sets the stage.

All 10 leading cowboys in all events are entered in the Wyoming classic now known as "Daddy of 'em All." The field at Cheyenne will be doing their respective riding, roping things for part of a purse in excess of ONE HUNDRED GRAND. One feature of the Wyoming rodeo is that only fresh, untried stock is used in the competition to give all the contestants an even break at the start. That's 30. holding them to a pair of doubles and a single over the six inning route. Touched for a ringing single by leadoff batter Apolinas Garza, Lopez got the second man, Rodolfo Vera from third baseman Jim Fernandez to Billy McDonald at first base.

Two passed balls plated Eagle Pass's initial run and also brought home Jesus Ovalle, who had walked. Lopez fanned the cleanup and number five hitter to gel out of further trouble. Del Rio went down the drain in order in their first trip to the plate but tied the score at 2-all in the second stanza. Roland Zavala led off with a long single. Jim Fernandez worked the Eagle hurler for a base on balls.

Raul Rivas waited out the pitch and loaded the bases with Vera's second walk in a row. Billy McDonald drilled one that second baseman Chuy Escontreras couldn't handle to plate Val Verde's first two tallies. Jim Fernandez and McDonald became home plate victims and Lopez popped out to Eagle catcher Jesus Rodriguez. Del Rio cut the Eagle lead to one run in the top of the fifth when Ortega hit relief pitcher Arturo Perez's first pitch plumb over the spectators and a line of cars that lined the left TOP HAND-Eddie Ortega, Val Verde County Little League All-Star left fielder, is shown coming home to hands full of welcome Monday night at Pop Word Park. Ortega drove in four runs with two homers in Del Rio's 7-4 Area championship game win over Eagle Pass.

The visitors got the run back and another one with it in the bottom of the fifth when Jesus Santoya singled, took second and scored on Jesus Ovalle's two-out double.

Perez walked, stole second and scored on Jesus Ovalle's two-out double. Ovalle was out on a rifle throw from Henry Fernandez to cousin Jim Fernandez trying to take third base on the play. Del Rio, down 4-3 going to bat in the final inning, blew the game wide open. Raul Rivas led off with his second straight double and Lopez promptly singled him home with the tying run. McDonald, who has been a real asset to the Del Rio cause since taking over first base in the second game against the Kinney County All Stars, singled up the middle and Ortega unloaded his second home run, a Mickey Mantle-type job that cleared the center field Scoreboard and a Kinney County pickup parked beyond the barrier.

Lopez took command of the situation in the bottom of the sixth, getting pinch-hitter Greg Nowlin on a fly to Zavala, Vargas on a tall foul fly down the third base line to catcher Fernandez and fanning pinch-hitter Roberto Garza. The win gave Del Rio the Area title and the right to represent Eagle Pass, Brackettville, Laughlin AFB and Val Verde County in the District's one-game, sudden-death playoff Thursday, July 23, with Pleasanton, winner of Area C.
