Susan.plays the role of the fourth woman to be executed in the gas chamber in the state of California. "I'Want to Live! 1 film version of one of the most controversial murder cases in the annals California crime, will show today through''Tuesday at the Grand Theatre, with Susan Hayward in a role based on the character of Barbara Graham. The screenplay is based on original material gathered by Edward S.

Montgomery, Pulitzer Prize- winning reporter of the San Francisco Examiner, who covered the case from the time of Mrs. Graham's arrest in Lynwood, May 3, 1953, to the moment of her execution at the age of 32 in the San Quentin gas chamber, June 3, 1955. Montgomery, portrayed in the film by Simon Oakland, was originally convinced of her guilt, but later following death house interviews with the condemned woman, and with psychologist, Carl Palmberg, he strongly believed she had been the victim of a glaring miscarriage of jus- tice. Barbara Graham already had a prison record for perjury and prostitution when she was arrested with ex-convicts Emmet Perkins and Jack Santo, portrayed respectively by Philip Coolidge and Lou Krugman, for the murder of Mrs. Mabel Monahan, an aged widow.

Ithough she maintained her innocence, the jury found her guilty on the evidence of another ex-convict (James Philbrook) picked up at the scene of the crime who had turned state's evidence. Another damaging piece of evidence was supplied by a police officer who had tricked Barbara into believing he was an underworld character who could supply her with an airtight alibi. -A tape recording of their conversation, fatal to her case was introduced into, the record. After she had been convicted, Montgomery and her lawyer led an unsuccessful fight to, save Barbara Graham from the gas chamber.
