NICKLAUS, TREVINO Tourney Sponsors Excuse Tired Pros PHILADELPHIA (AP) Jack Nicklaus was just too tired to coordinate" and Lee Trevino, the Merry Mexican who leads this year's PGA money winnings list, missedone-foot putts because he couldn't concentrate. So, the two stars got permission to withdraw from the $150,000 Philadelphia Golf Classic after Thursday's first round, led by Bob Murphy, Don Massengale and Labron Harris. Murphy, who hasn't won since 1968; Massengale, a non-winner since 1966; and Harris, a six- year tour veteran still looking for his first triumph, each carded five-under-par 67s over the Whitemarsh Country Club course. They held a one-stroke advantage over defending champion Dave Hill, Masters champ Billy Casper, Art Wall, Dick Rhyan, and Charles Goody. Trevino shot a one-under 71 while Nicklaus carded a 74.

Both were excused by the sponsor. Trevino left for El Paso, Tex. "It's something that came up while my wife and I were in Europe the last few weeks," Trevino said. "It's on my mind and I just can't play. I've got to go home and get it straightened out.

It's really got me bugged. I had a one-foot putt out there today and left it short. I just wasn't thinking about my game." Nicklaus told a formal news conference, "This is the first time I've ever asked to be excused from a tournament. I'm just too tired to coordinate." Nicklaus, who won the British Open last Sunday in an 18-hole playoff with Doug Sanders, added "I played very poorly Thursday. I even too tired to sleep.

There is too much going on the rest of the year to let that happen. I'm going home. I'll spend three days at home and be ready for next week." With Trevino and Nicklaus gone, the tournament lost a lot of its color. U.S.Openchampion Tony Jacklin, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and two-time winner Dick Lotz took the week off.

That means five of the top W) money winners aren't here. The 33-year-old Massengale, twice a winner in his 10 years as a touring professional, shot an opening round 33-34 with seven birdies and two bogeys. For the second straight week he used a stance he gave up after the 1967 season. "I've gone back to what I used to do, playing the ball a little bit back," said the Texan, who a week ago finished second in the Milwaukee Open. His birdie putts included one of 25 feet and another of 30.

Murphy, 29, said he was going to win the $30,000 first prize for two reasons, to get even for the clubs that were stolen out of his car here last and to help pay for a house his family will move into at Defray Beach, in a few weeks'. The 212-pound Murphy shot a 34-33. He had five birdie putts and played the rest in regulation. Harris a 23-year-old Oklahoman, came in with a 33-34, including a 30-foot putt for an eagle on the par five 488-yard fifth hole. He had five birdies and two bogeys in the round.

Harris finished in a tie for fifth last week in Milwaukee, one of his best finishes sirrce he lost a playoff here in 1968 on a third sudden-death hole to Murphy. His only better finish since was fourth in the Minnesota Classic last year. Two strokes behind the top three came Bruce Devlin, PGA champion Ray Floyd, Bunky Henry and Gibby Gilbert. Each had a 69 over the par course. Deane Besman, who won at Milwaukee last week, was among 10 at 70.

DEL RIO (TEXAS! NEWS-HERALD, Friday, July Astros Quell Cub Rally for 2-1 Win HOUSTON (AP) The Houston Astros scored two unearned runs in the third inning and put down a ninth-inning rally to claim a 20 victory Thursday night over the Chicago Cubs. Pitcher Don Wilson, who took himself out of the game when he got into trouble in the ninth, claimed the victory. He stands 3-4 for the season. Wrestlethon, Inc. of San Antonio are producing the Del Rio bouts which include a semifinal and a supporting event on that date. Mil Mascaras is the Mexican idol who wrestled Valentine's Texas Heavyweight title away from the Washingtonian recently.

Blanchard Inked For Del Rio Bout Frank Brown, president of Wreslethon, San Antonio, announced today that "Jolting Joe" Blanchard, former Kansas State NCAA heavyweight champion, will replace Cyclone Sota on the July 22 wrestling card to be held at Del Rio's 4-H Club Show Bam. 'Brown explained that Sota, who was slated to meet Big Big Orton in the semifinal match, was injured in a bout the other night and came down with a kidney infection. "Sota may or may not be O.K. by the Del Rio date, so I am replacing him with Jolting Joe Blanchard. Joe is seen quite often on our TV program and has been in pro wrestling about 14 years.

He has headlined programs all over the North American continent and I'm sure the Del Rio fans will get their money's worth of action from him." 6-2, 245 pounds, was a great professional football player for Darrell Royal when the current University of Texas coach was directing a team in the Canadian League. Area fans will recall Blanchard readily as the TV commentator on many of the Wrestlethon's wrestling programs. Brown also disclosed that Johnny Valentine, who will meet Texas heavyweight champion Mil Mascaras here on July 22, has 20 years of pro experience and is anxious to regain his title he lost to the Mexican idol. Valentine, a 6-2, 245 pounder is in the midst of his most successful period having topped the $100,000 mark in earnings for the year. Valentine has a world-wide reputation as a ring toughie from San Antonio to Japa'n and from Australia to South Africa, according to Brown, who also predicts a real "grudge" match when Valentine squares off against Mil Mascaras in Del Rio.

The Del Rio event is for Wednesday, at 8:30 p.m., and tickets are to be offered from 12 noon, date of the matches, at the 4-H Club Barn. The Cowboys said the only rookie listed as a quarterback, Dick Faucette, has a slight groin pull. As a result, he may not see much duty.

The National Football League club said 6-foot-4 Ken Bailey, who played quarterback at the University of Houston but was signed as a potential tight end, will have to fill-in at the man- under post.
