PRIDE AT STAKE FRIDAY PDC Bars All Meets for Year Side Lined- Tricks of the Trade Pirates Gauchos Duel to Avoid Cellar says They look awfully tough Im concerned about moving the ball against them I just hope our kids are in the same frame of mind as they were against Jordan The teams collide on San Pedros campus (Dodson Field)' at 2:30 The Bees meet tomory" row at Harbor City Pirate coach Bill Seixas says -Our plan is to make sure we get that tie for second It wont be an easy job-Those three backs of theirs (George) Mitchell (Lamar) Edwards and (Bob) Moss are a threat every time they get the ball Gaucho coach Gordy Wells tie for second or in last place The cellar also lies open to the Gauchos who are spurred by no more incentive than the last chance for a 1960 victory Heres how it works: Jordan has already finished its league season with a win a loss and two ties (1-1-2) Assuming Banning defeats Gardena Friday the Pilots already assured of an undisputed title will have a 4-0 record with Gardena 1-2-1 San Pedro can be either 2-2 or 1-3 and Narbonne either 1-2-1 or 0-3-1 barring the further possibility of a tie complicating everything If anybody thinks Friday afternoons Marine League finale between San Pedro and Narbonne has nothing at stake they havent sounded out the opponents Depending upon whether they win or lose the Pirates will finish their campaign in a Port Prep Football Figures RUSHING (Lrafue (tnwi only Gardena Jordan excluded) MARINE LEAGUE SCORING (All Schools Espalin Banning Moss Narbonne Jackson Banning Edwards Narhcnne Campbell San Pedro Boydstun Barring Mitchell Narbonne Barber San Pedro OGrady Banning Ferrante Narbonne Lesure San Pedro Olguin San Pedro Mills Jordan Espalin Banning Arens Banning Moss Narbonne O'Grady Banning Boydstun Banning Campbell San Pedro Gaines Jordan Jackson Banning Peterson Gardena Scalfidl Gardena LOS ANGELES Tht Athletic Policy Determining Committee (PDC) of the Los Angeles City Schools System has ruled that San Pedro and Jordan will not meet in any sports competition for a year The ruling arose from the riotous incident following the football game between the schools at Watts on Oct 21 Jordan school officials had already taken it upon themselves to change all remaining home football games to opponents fields and had suspended student travel to those contests Those moves will remain in effect indefinitely The PDCs ruling barring San Pedro and Jordan from meeting athletically states that neither school will receive a forfeit nor will either receive an automatic loss The scheduled contests will simply be considered as no con- 5 test As a result each will have one less league contest in football cross-country track gymnastics and swimming and two less in baseball basketball and tennis which are double round sports How that will affect league! standings overall remains to be seen Standings are determined on a percentage basis and not on the actual number of wins or losses The ruling will carry through until the basketball season of 1961-62 The next scheduled San Pedro-Jordan meeting was next Wednesdays Marine League basketball opener Instead the Pirates will play their alumni on Tuesday night In other PDC action Fremont was penalized much more severely as a result of incidents following its football game with Los Angeles High which was given a clean bill Garden Fans Urge Baylor to Record RICHARD ROBERTS Sporta Editor November 16 1960 Page 19 Frick Seeking to Protect Dodger Interests in LA NEW YORK Give it to Baylor Give it to Baylor Thats the cry 10132 basketball fans took up in Madison Square Garden Tuesday night after Elgin Baylor of the Los Angeles Lakers scored his 59th point against the New York Knicks to break the Garden individual high scoring mark for one game in the National Basketball Association There were still about six minutes left to play and the fans wanted Baylor to break the NBA record high of 64 points for one game that Baylor himself had set little over a year ago Nov 8 1959 against the Boston Celtics Break it the former Seattle By RICHARD ROBERTS All of football isn't played on the field not even on the practice field Theres a lot that goes on in the locker rooms that is missed by most of the male fans and all the female fans we hope! Its even more basic than the common pep talk for inspiration or the chalk talk for education Games and championships have been won or lost by the type of taping job done on a star halfbacks sprained ankle There are other less known tricks of the trade employed by the trainers like the veteran Oscar Cunningham who mother-hens to the hurts and whims of the Mary Star of the Sea football team His kit bag is a portable pharmacy equipped to handle any possible crisis that could arise before or during a football game The Stars dedicated last weekends title-clinching win over St Monica to Oscar and he did indeed play a most important part In the victory Oscar took one look at the muddy Rancho Cienega field and immediately started soaking the soles of the players shoes in mineral oil It kept the mud from sticking to their cleats Coach Nick Trani explained and as a result our kids had pretty good footing most of the day Heck I should have thought of it myself I used to be a baker and we had to grease the pans to keep the bread from sticking Trani also credits Cunningham with helping the team overcome the early-season rash of injuries that if allowed to go unchecked would have been fatal to the title hopes Without Oscar we wouldnt have had (Joel Bleymaier for the St John Vianney game Trani said He really put that boy back together in a hurry Another school that has to appreciate the importance of training techniques is Banning which could win another A City championship if the tape holds out With both coaches Paul Huebner and Gene Vollnogle working steadily it takes the Pilots about an hour to get taped up for a normal practice session or game meaning about four days a week The most we have ever used in a season was three cases Huebner said but were already on our sixth case with at least two more games to go A case contains 25 cartons of 10 rolls each Figuring 10 yards to the roll by the time the Pilots complete their sixth case they will have applied about 82 miles of tape to their walking wounded Tailback Danny Espalin and fullback Art O'Grady who have been bothered bv bad ankles were taped so heavily against 3Iuir last week that they appeared to be wearing white boots on one foot The tape went on the foot and then over the shoe and all to prevent any movement of the joint Without training tape the Pilots probably would be unable to put a capable football team on the fteld That Was a Close One It was with great relief that we noted baseball commissioner Ford Fricks refusal to allow the American League to move in on Los Angeles by next season At best we would have had a humpty-dumpty ball club thrust upon our doorstep with a note attached to please adopt same The ALs idea of expansion amounted more to extension Rather than inflating the present eight-team league to spread the particles among 10 clubs they were intending to merely lop off the lower and less desirable extremities to stock the two new outfits Fred Haney pointed out in an AP news story last week: Its strictly up to the other eight owners to decide whether the new teams in Los Angeles and Minneapolis-St Paul will draw The owners will have to part with good players This the AL owners were not willing to sacrifice thus dooming their foster children to failure through their own miserly reluctance to provide properly for them The hope that the allure of visiting stars would bring a profitable attendance is absurd After the initial weeks there would be no thrill in watching Mickey Mantle or Rocky Colavito take batting practice Matron Returns to Star Squad Friday when the players w-ere enthusiastically celebrating the championship win Right guard Andy Owens who limped off the field painfully at one point in the game is slowed down somewhat by a pulled calf muscle but will play this week Season statistics (all games): Mary Star of the Seas first string left guard Tony Marron Is expected to return to full duty in the regular season foot-ba'l finale against Bishop Montgomery at Daniels Field Friday night Marron has missed most of the last three games because of an ankle injury although he did All-America did He finished with 71 points on 28 field goals on 48 attempts and 15 of 19 free throws When he was taken ou 28 seconds left he received an ovation It was incidental that Los An geles beat the Knicks 123-108 in the feature of the Garden dou-bleheader after the Detroit PiSr tons had wiped out a 20-point deficit to beat the Boston Celtics 115-114 in overtime I got very nervous when they announced I had set a Garden record at 5 points Baylor said in the dressing room They tried to feed me so much when the crowd started chanting that I asked the boys to let me make my own plays Baylor tossed baskets in from every angle He scored 34 of his 71 points in the first half and his 28 field goals wiped out the old mark of 27 set by Joe Fulks of Philadelphia against Indianapolis Feb 110 1949 Willie Naulls' of the' Knickerbockers one time Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick casting a skeptical eye on its plans and Congress threatening to take antimonopoly action if a club isnt placed in Los Angeles Frick maintained that Walter OMalley who moved the Dodgers to Los Angeles has spent about a million dollars for the shift and is entitled to get some of it back from any AL team that wishes to share the territory Greenbergs outfit wants to pay nothing do nothing said Frick I wont stand for it I dont want anybody thinking that just because Im for expansion Im going to vote for it on that basis The specter of government action loomed Sen Estes Ke-fauver (D-Tenn) chairman of the anti-monopoly committee warned against any delay in expansion Rand Nixon subcommittee chief counsel said: If there is any delay in operating new franchises in Washington and Los Angeles there will be swift action in both houses of Congress to enforce baseballs responsibility to Congress and the public As if this didnt spell trouble enough plans for a joint bid for the new Washington franchise appeared to have broken down Seahawks' Final Foe High Scorer Harbor Colleges problem in its football season closer at Santa Monica Friday night will be defense The Corsairs are second only to Bakersfield in Metropolitan Conference scoring and have never been limited to less than 24 points not even by probable champion Long Beach nor the high-geared Renegades
