British commissioner general for Southeast Asia said today MacDonald said that no one can predict the long-term results of the war but to date it stands as a defeat for Russia and a victory for the democracies He told a news conference that despite Communist attempts to maisquerade as the winners everybody outside the iron curtain knows the Reds lost and as a result have been weakened everywhere in Asia MacDonald said the tide has turned so completely in Indochina that Communist Leader Ho Chi-minh can only win by betraying his country by bringing in outside troops (Red Chinese or Russians) He said the Korean pressure has improved the situation greatly in Burma Siam and Malaya MacDonald said the lesson to be learned was two fold: 1 Military aggression will be beaten back 2 Free nations know if they stick together and remain strong no power-mad dictator can smash them Attorney Heads Police Commission Attorney Bates Booth yesterday was elected president of the police commission Appointment of Herman Selvin president of the Los Angeles Bar association to the group was confirmed by the city council and he was elected vice president of the commission sq YL WHISTLE A navy vessel whistle soon will be installed on the Wilmington steam plant ready for use in event of a harbor disaster to help summon the harbor emergency force Port Warden Frank Higbee chief of the emergency force arranged for the placing of the whistle Joseph Shapiro of the National Metal Steel Corp donated the whistle and A Wingo of the bureau of water and power agreed to install it at the steam plant The whistle can be blown day or night because the steam plant in continuous operation always has steam Whistles on ships and ashore sounding the SOS call will be the means of summoning the emergency corps in event of disaster The whistle was taken off the old USS Pyro ammunition carrier now being scrapped at National Metals Terminal Island yard National Metal in the last four years has scrapped more than 130 ships and practically all of them have had whistles But National has few whistles on hand Factories and plants buy em and now and again an individual will buy one for some sentimental reason There are fewer ship clocks and bells Easily carried these items often are gone by the time a ship reaches the scrap yard Seems like theres more sentiment attached to clocks and bells Some skippers are fussy about bells are dissatisfied unless the bell is in the key they like Some mothers have bought bells finding them unique and effective in calling the family to meals LESSON More than a little the doorway Buda began to win Every time the machine paid off the 22 youngsters outside the hall let up a cheer Pretty soon Felder related a crowd gathered to watch the boys and the leader Gamblers looked up from their cards to see what was going on Traffic nearly came to a halt The leader played on grimly He inserted a few nickels into the machine and it coughed up a few in return Eventually however he won his point The slot machine swallowed up all his winnings Relieved he led the boys away from the hall and shortly thereafter they set out for San Pedro 5 CENTS Customers and vendors
