for a $15000000 cargo-passenger terminal to be built at Berths 90-93 in Los Angeles Harbor were released today by Bernard Caughlin the municipal ports general manager The agreement to build the huge new terminal and assign it to the American Presi- Elementary junior and senior high school and junior college facilities in the harbor and peninsula areas facing their greatest enrollment increase in local annals are in the line for $26 million in improvements and expansion if voters approve school bond propositions on tomorrows ballot A detailed description of harbor area school area benefits to be derived from passage of the $158500000 bond issue includes construction of the $3000000 Rudecinda Sepulveda Dodson junior high school in northwest San Pedro relieving the pressure on Dana junior high Another major project is the acquisition of a site and con-siruction of a new high school Iit the central Palos Verdes area at a cost expected to exceed 54 million They are two of 30 high school and junior high projects scheduled for the district served by the Banning Narbonne and San Pedro high schools to be put into effect upon passage of the bond issue by the required two-thirds majority vote officials said Junior High Plans Other high and junior high projects for the harbor include funds for designing of new junior high school in the peninsula area and the North Wilmington area senior high school Construction of these two schools will be financed with funds from a future bond issue Ma improvements are scheduled for Fleming Junior High School in Lomita with the construction of a 19 unit classroom building a new cafeteria and conversion of certain classrooms Other Projects Other junior high school projects include additional land at Stephen White Junior High in North Wilmington classrooms and textbook room at Wilmington Junior High and an agricultural classroom at Dana Funds are earmarked for purchase of a site for a second high school in the central Palos Verdes area as well as completion of land purchase for the proposed North Wilmington School Also included in the bond issue is construction of a special school on the old Banning Homes Site Major classroom additions will be erected at three of the four big schools in this area including a 15 classroom unit at Banning High in Wilmington and an 18 classroom unit at Narbonne High in Lomita Among other improvements for existing schools are a girls locker room at Banning and a girls physical education room at San Pedro High In addition the San Pedro High site will be expanded by the purchase of additional land Momentary Schools A total of 54 elementary school projects are scheduled for the harbor area They include three new schools sites for three addition (Continued on Page 10) With space hole in an engine exhaust pipe turned a holiday ocean outing into a tragedy that spelled death for a Los Angeles man and nearly was fatal to four other persons the Coast Guard reported William McComb of Los Angeles succumbed to the poisonous fumes of the engine of the R-Mis-Take a cabin cruiser off Catalina on Sunday Narrowly escaping a like fate were Dale Weaver of Los Angeles owner of the 30 foot craft Hawkins 36 Miss Donna Barton 33 and William Dunlap 34 all of Los Angeles and Michael Jaszcyzyh 37 of Sun Valley Survivors of the craft said one of 'i he twin engines of the craft broke down on Sunday about five miles off the island Weaver and Hawkins were on deck and the others asleep below when Weaver heard a weak cry for help from Miss Barton The two men went into the fume-filled cabin St whose owner reported to police that burglars crawled in a skylight and lowered themselves with a rope to loot the shop Inside they took $236 in cash from a register and a desk drawer before they looted showcases of 12 sweaters 31 shirts 18 watches four jackets four hats four pair of cuff links nine pair of trousers and a sport coat The intruders escaped via a back door with about $750 of loot police said Bag Cash Gone Willie Stephens of 1006 Ct told police burglars entered his house during the night and carefully removed an overnight bag that was under the bed and his wife were sleeping upon Inside the bag he reported was about $525 in cash San Pedro burglars entered the Western Auto store at Fourth and Pacific Ave by climbing in a vent police said then chopping their way out of a television set table radio and camera police said Handyman Kills Family Self LOS ANGELES (AP An unemployed handyman killed his mother and sister with a razor and then burned himself to death police report Officers identified him as Teodor Slosar 38 and made this report: He slashed the wrists of his mother Mrs Vittoria Slosar and the throat and wrists of his sister Viola Slosar 35 yesterday in the apartment where the three lived at 3225 Main St The mother was feeble the sister an invalid from arthritis Police said Slosar left a note in Italian which said in part: They are too much for me And I had to meet all those doctors bills too This is my penance I hope God forgives me Detectives said Slosar a native of Austria who had lived in Italy poured kerosene on a closet floor lit a match and burned to death BLIND BOMBER GUILTY PORTLAND Ore (AP) A US District Court jury after a day of confusion returned a verdict late Saturday night convicting six men including a blind bomber-extortionist of mail fraud dent Lines was signed last December by Lloyd A Menveg president of the Board of Harbor Commissioners The agreement which also was signed by George Killion president of APL stipulated that the steamship company will route all of its passenger and cargo business in Los Angeles and the surrounding area through the new facility for at least 20 years The terminal will include a two-story passenger-cargo structure 1000 feet long and 200 feet wide clear-span with the passenger facilities on the upper floor About 18000 square feet of office space will be provided in two wings at one end An unusual feature will be automobile ramps to the roof which will permit delivery of passengers and visitors to escalators there There will be a paved parking area for 3000 cars adjacent to the passenger facilities There also will be a second building to be devoted entirely to cargo which will be 630 200 feet clear-span Cargo capacity of the two sheds is estimated at 35000 tons and other features include 2400 linear feet of wharf dockside rail and truck facilities latex tanks and refrigerated cargo storage space To serve the facility a slip 1200 feet long and tapering in width from 500 feet to 300 feet will be dredged from the shallow inlet now known as Boschke Slough This dredging first of the projects construction phases is expected to begin in August It is anticipated that the entire project will be completed in four years by which time the American President Lines will have put its new 1400-passenger luxury liner into Pacific service The passenger-cargo terminal at Berths 153-155 now occupied by APL then will be assigned to another steamship comp any Caughlin stated US Navy Watches Soviet Trawlers WASHINGTON (AP) The State Department has notified Russia in response to a Soviet complaint that the US Navy is keeping close watch on -shipping in the ocean approaches to the United States Moscow had protested tHat US aircraft had buzzed Soviet trawlers in international waters near the Grand Banks southeast of Nova Spotia State Department Press Officer Lincoln White said the Soviet complaint was made about mid-April and that it received a prompt answer Privately informants said that the behavior of the Soviet trawler fleet along sea and air routes between the US East Coast and Europe is suspicious in some respects The Russian vessels were said to be in waters which are not normally heavily fished They seem to have a large amount of electronic detection equip such as radar The number of vessels is constant one arriving as another departs which lays its larvae in the sand The larvae make their wray to the egg and feed on it When the baby fish are liberated to the ocean larger fish feed on them To these hazards of survival have been added the raids by thousands of human grunion hunters snapping up the parent fish before they can lay their eggs Following the close of the present four-day run the fish Five Sought in Attack Case WILMINGTON Harbor Division police today are hunting for four youths believed to be involved in a reported kidnaping and assault of a Torrance housewife in Wilmington early Sunday Already arrested is one 16-year-old Wilmington youth who denied any part in the incident police report According to the report the victim gave police she and another companion were coming out of a Wilmington theater about midnight when five youths stopped them and made improper advances One of the women managed to flee but the Torrance woman was seized by the youths and taken to a nearby vacant house police reported There the youths allegedly assaulted the woman and later freed her The victim picked one of the youths out of a police mug book at San Pedro headquarters and he was picked up for questioning Yefs Vaccinate 750 Port Dogs A record-breaking 14620 dogs were vaccinated city wide against rabies in a special three-night program last ieek Dr George Uhl city health officer reported today Of this total 750 dogs received the shots in the one-night clinic conducted by San Pedro Veterinarians Drs William Kimball William Crow and Raymond Harris at the San Pedro Animal Shelter Dr Uhl praised the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association whose members contributed their services and the PTA whose chapters provided volunteers Eleven representatives of Gateway weekend surpassed the preholiday estimate of 350 Late reports of deaths on the highways may boost the total past the record high toll of 369 reported in a three-day Memorial Day weekend in 1955 The latest figures covering a 78-hc-ur period from 6 (local time Thursday to midnight yesterday showed 356 persons were killed in motor vehicle accidents In other violent deaths during the extended holiday weekend the first of the season 124 persons drowned and 87 others were killed in miscellaneous type accidents an over-all total of 567 The National Safety Council which had estimated the preholiday toll at 350 had expressed belief last night that a decrease in traffic in many areas because of rain might hold the toil below its prediction However it passed the mark and final reports were not tabulated The heavy toll was termed by council officials as proof that impatience intemperance and indifference bring death on the highways especially on holidays The traffic total compared
