'Phone Army Invades Loyola to Back Lieb By MIL CHIPP (News-Pilot Sports Editor) If you think the Republicans are having trouble re-shaping their party plans consider the plight of Earle (Goldie) Holmes who formulates the athletic policies at nearby Compton Junior College This writer has learned that early next week Compton will be Invited officially to send its undefeated football team to Tyler Texas to participate in the second annual Texas Rose Bowl game Dec 4 As matters stand now the Tartars have received an unofficial bid with the notification that the McCoy will he forthcoming Monday or Tuesday Now there are at least a dozen junior colleges this side of the Rockies who would jump at the opportunity to award its footballers with a junket to the Lone Star state But to Holmes its just another Wrinkle in an already deeply furrowed brow Its no secret that Compton is receiving serious consideration to represent the West Coast in the Dec 11 Little Rose Bowl game at Xr3 3 cl cl The News-Pilot today can report that Compton almost got the official bid to represent the Coast in the Pasadena classic Tuesday evening Members of the Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors of the game were moving fast that day inasmuch as the promoters of the Gold Dust Bowl tilt which is scheduled for Dec 11 in Vallejo had announced an acceptance by San Francisco City College which reportedly was in strong contention for the Little Rose Bowl Also by the tiipe you read this it should be announced that Chaffey also has accepted a Gold Dust Bowl invitation thus assuring two powerful jaysee elevens for this attraction Pasadena officials were fit to be tied late Tuesday afternoon and immediately began preparations to take a telegraphic poll that evening which would officially tender a bid to Compton The promoters figured that the news of Comptons acceptance (which will undoubtedly come if the Tartars are invited) would offset the Gold Dust Bowl announcement However a majority vote could not be reached and thus the rush invitation fell flat Officially Holmes at a late hour yesterday had not been contacted by any member of the Pasadena selection board The news in some publications that Compton is receiving consideration indeed was just that to Holmes If the Little Rose Bowl forces want a tip here it is youd better make that invitation to Compton pronto instead of waiting until after the Tartar clash with Los Angeles City College Nov 26 Im willing to bet all the fish in the ocean that if you wait until Nov 26 you wont get Compton they will have accepted the invitation from Tyler Trojans Reported in Top Shape Bruins Hampered UCLA and the Trojans of Southern California from all indications will settle their 1948 grid supremacy before upwards of 85-000 onlookers in Memorial Coliseum Saturday The Uclans host this year checked ticket sales today and estimated approximately 85000 seats have already been sold How many more fans will chunk out $5 for the game remains to be seen Coach Jeff Cravath said the favored Trojans should be at top strength for the game The Bruins according to Coach Bert La Bruch-erie probably will be without Halfback Howie Hansen who has an injured ankle Southern Cal has one more game against Notre Dame in the Coliseum Dec 4 Playing their last game for the Bruins will be such seniors as Ends Bill Clements and Phil Tinsley Fullback Art Steffen Halfbacks Iggy Polizzi and Jack Brown and another last year back Skip Rowland who was sidelined with injuries several weeks ago School officials today announced that ihe combined root- ing sections bands yell leaders and parade participants numbering in all approximately 5000 people will unite efforts to present spectacular pre-game and half-time pageantry in celebration of the 1948 1949 and 1950 California Centennials For the first time in history two rooting sections will perform the same card stunts at the same time The rooting sections will depict the opponent he has fought so far on his exhibition tour I dont know why he shouldnt be a contender if he gets serious about his training Louis said in his dressing room last night after engaging in a six round no decision affair with the Cleveland Negro He threw two good right hand punches and I knew I was hit but they werent hard enough to bother me the champion added Anyone who fights him has to be very careful With both fighters using 12-ounce gloves instead of the regulation eight Bivins opened a cut above Louis deft eye in the second round Joe received the wound originally Nov 8 when he accidentally bumped heads with Johnny Shkor in an exhibition at Boston The cut bled only slightly but Bivins opened it up again in the fourth Bivins did most of the leading while Louis opened up only sporadically He almost dropped Bivins with a right in the second when the two were in a neutral corner The champion jabbed most of the time and seemed content to take it easy but opened up suddenly at one point in the fifth and drove Bivins to cover a flurry of rights and lefts Although the exhibition was a no-decision affair Matchmaker Larry Atkins conducted a poll among newsmen at ringside and reported the writers favored Bivins by a 9 to 5 vote However almost everyone agreed that Louis had plenty in reserve Louis weighed 220 and had a 40-pound edge over Bivins who appeared to be in extra good shape A crowd of 10086 saw the bout which produced a gross gate of $47591 Louis received 35 per cent -TALENTED TACKLE- of -the OrOO 2QUAD tHETOuCrti LITTLE CEN ts-h Or- HE A spurned an offer for the position Lieb has been felt out unofficially regarding the Hilltop spot and it is known that he would like to make his permanent home in Southern California However the ex-Notre Darner is very popular in his current position as line coach at Alabama and officials of the southern school are extremely satisfied with his work But underneath it all influential Loyola followers are confident that Lieb will be most receptive to an offer to return to the Lions to take up where he left off when he resigned in 1938 The telephone army is gaining force throughout the entire state and very likely will be followed up with a barrage of letters to Loyola officials strongly urging the hiring of the popular Lieb There is talk too of resurrecting the now silent Roaring Lions a synthetic alumni group organized during Liebs first reign which would add further momentum to the Bring Lieb Back movement Loyola University is being deluged with phone calls from alumni and friends urging the hiring of Tom Lieb as head football coach The News Pilot has learned Just how much effect this telephone army will have on tfte powers-that-be remains to be seen when the next meeting of the Board of Athletic Control takes place Just when this will be has not been decided I can report that as yet no official move has been made on the hiring of a mentor to replace recently resigned Bill Sargent Delaware 13 Hang onto your hats men theres a storm a-brewin and its With the fair sex which only complicates matters Mrs Luhr of Oakland president of the California Congress of Parents and Teachers went off the deep end a few days ago and took a blast at the current high school football regulations First of all let me state my stand on the PTA It is a wonderful organization doing good work and it has every right to take an interest in the goings-on of our educational institutions But in this instance I am of the opinion that Mrs Luhr is slightly Off base and while she undoubtedly meant well the PTA bosswoman must have been prodded on by some outsiders who have been instrumental in keeping our high school sports on an outmoded basis for so many years Mrs Luhr claims that the differences in sizes of opposing players is the chief cause of permanent injury and often death among high school athletes I wonder if Mrs Luhr realizes that the high schools have a so-called exponent system whereby boys are segregated according to their grade height weight and age so as to fit the right boys into their proper category That is why you have varsity and Bee teams Along tlxis line I would suggest that Mrs Luhr and her group take Up the type of equipment being used by our high school footballers In many cases schools do not haae sufficient good equipment to hand out with the result that some boys take to the field in hand-me-downs that fail to provide sufficient protection Mrs Luhr also hit at away-from-home games stating: Students driving 60 miles in jalopies to distant night games constitutes another hazard to both pupils and faculty and must be curtailed in some manner My dear Mrs Luhr students who drive jalopies to the senior prom or a Friday night beach party are just as susceptible to an accident as the football fans who drive 60 miles Conversely then lets do away with the proms parties and the like Would your PTA stand for that? Not if you have any children attending high school Luhr further states that the gate is the only consideration When coaches put boys back into games too soon after they have suffered injuries I have yet to read of one high school coach being canned for failing to win games or lose money at the gate On this score I suggest that Mrs Luhr visit the players bench during a game and see what care is given to an injured youth and then make that same statement Nope I think youve been poorly misguided in this instance Mrs Luhr Instead of knocking football why dont you take steps to make it all the more interesting for mothers and dads to attend?
