Snuq San Pedro Berth 0 IE -IsU Skipp er Settl es For Floral Sea world and everywhere he went the drabness of the ocean contrasted vividly with the worlds gardens from tulips to tropical orchids A bachelor he has found 'that a garden requires as much at tention as a ship He has navigated the shoals of pruning and transplanting skirted the reefs of fertilization and spraying and piloted his ship-shape garden safely into one productive port after another After spending many years staring at empty horizons the flowers are a welcome relief The vegetable harvest erases the memories of many a makeshift meal aboard ship during roaring storms Such rewards can make it easier for a seafaring' man to divorce himself from the sea Fresh garden vegetables on the table he finds are a lot more comforting than a spy-glass look at the ocean from a cliff side berth Not all retired sea going skippers buy themselves a snug harbor overlooking the whitecaps when they end their clays at sea Capt Anker Petersen of 321 Oliver St would have to climb the flag mast at the Barton Hill School to scan the harbor His neatly landscaped home looks more like a botanical garden than the view lot vistas so often associated by artists with men of the sea Petersen has a reason for his interest in the soil this is the second time he has retired from the sea and he is determined to become landlocked for good The only way to get rooted to land he surmised is to become associated with it The results of his gardening work both in vegetables and flowers belies his long associa tion with the sea The retired skipper shipped out when he was a kid as an ap prentice seaman He has touched most of the major ports in the SEA OF FLOWERS Retired skipper Anker Petersen examines some home grown lilies that are candidates for blue ribbon awards Its a far cry front the rolling deck of a ship in high seas (News-Pilot Photo) BLAZING CAULDRON Huge flare spots flash out in the smoke billowing from these tanks within the retaining wall at the Tidewater-Associated Oil Co tank farm at West Basin The flames licked harbor skies throughout the night transforming the basin into a huge fireplace Thousands of residents spent way into the evening watching the fire from hillside vantage points Alxiut six feet of foamite and water now covers oil within the retaining walls (News-Pilot Photo) Beaten Child Starts New Life TV earl- Operation Termed A Success By MAG At this time of the year there are some bulbs that bloomed late in the spring that are now an attractive mass of brownish leaves The temptation is to cut them off and dig the bulbs before they mature naturally Dont do this As the foliage turns brown the strength for next years bloom is going into the bulb Water it sparingly If the brown foliage bothers you too much it can be doubled back and tied or braided and turned under in short lengths By the first part of July the tops of the bulbs should be completely dried and the bulbs can be dug Do not leave them in the ground over two years if you wish the best possible blooms Put the bulbs in shallow boxes out in the open air for a couple of weeks then tie them in sacks add a generous handful of moth flakes to discourage thrips and store in a cool dry place until September Late June or early July is the best time to put out new hibiscus These plants do well here and are very lovely They are easy to grow and make an ex cellent background shrub The plants prefer a sunny location but will take semi-shade If they are already established in the garden now is the time to give them a feeding of com mercial food One-half cup to medium plant should be suf ficient Scratch gently around the drip line They require plenty of water now but very little during the winter As soon as the strelitzia or bird of paradise is through blooming give it a generous feeding of commercial fertilizer About one cup to an average size plant dug in eight to ten inches from the main stem should be enough Keep the plant well watered during the summer Watch for suckers on the rose bushes unless removed they seriously weaken the bush Care fully trace the sucker to its beginning (usually below the soil) and pull them out If you cut them chances are they will come right back Spray the garden at regular intervals This isnt much of a job but it will save considerable work if you do it Churchill was with such spotlight personalities as President Eisenhower Vice Pres i Nixon Secretary of State Dulles and Britains foreign secretary Anthony Eden But at every turn it was the 79-year-old pink and white British prime minister who caught everyones eye With typical Churchillian show manship he quickly captured the airport audience by stepping smartly into view from the British stratocruiser doffing his gray homburg and grinning merrily This brought huzzahs and applause Once aground Churchill steamed unerringly toward a cluster of microphones leaving the welcoming Nixon and Dulles to bring- up the rear Once Churchill had had his say he spun on Dulles and Nixon and barked: Was it all right? They agreed still clutching their own undelivered written statements Then Sir Winston spied a waiting open car and made for it There were no more speeches Churchill planted his rotund figure squarely in the middle of the wide rear seat Nixon however managed to squeeze himself in to the left of the relaxed visitor Churchill then gave himself over to a swarm of photographers who clicked and flashed until they could no longer evoke Palos Verdes Avery McCarthy president of the subdividing and building concern which has been active in Southern California Since 1892 anticipates that rough grading in the tract will start about July 15 The McCarthy firm plans building three and fcrur bedroom Funds Sought To Fight Polio Port Firm Gives Two Scholarships Philip Park Inc has award ed two $100 scholarships to outstanding students at California State Polytechific College at San No More Wet Messy Bathrooms!
