14 THE SUND'AY TIMES: CHATTANOOGA TENN- SUNDAY OCTOBER 3 1915 Yale Chattanooga Runs Up Huge Score on Carson-Newman Virginia Defeats FOOTBALL RESULTS BENNIE PALMER COMING CHAMP WHO MEETS HAYES HERE FRIDAY DARLINGTON GETS REVENGE BY DEFEATING CITY HIGH I Chattanooga Times Special ROME Ga Oct 2 Darlington school eleven of this city gained some revenge on City High of Chattanooga for some past defeats today taking the visitors into camp by a score of 20 to Coach Briggs has patched up the holes In his team from last year with some splendid new material including several Rome High "drafts" and the Darlington team again appears a contender for the Georgia championship Capt Hamilton starred for the visitors as did Davis while the line was the best asset of the local team aside from Vandiver's running Darlington started the game with a rush City High finally held on her two 1 r- 4 -g-: I 11 --4- ii -1 1 7-! A -i e1ir) BAYLOR TEAM WINS CONVINCING VICTORY OVER KNOXVILLE HIGH MOCCASINS HAVE "DRIVE" Piles Up Huge Score on Carson-Newman STRAIGHT FOOTBALL USED ALL PLAYS UNDER COVER Coach Cunningham of Georgia Watches Spiegel's Team Shoot Across Field Gaining at Will Although all of University of Chattanooga's real offensive repertoire was kept under cover yesterday the Moccasins hammered their way to fourteen touchdowns against Carson and Newman yesterday with great ease The Moccasins dashed outside tackle swept around the ends and smashed through center with equal ease The visitors defended pluckily but were simply taken off their feet by the viciousness of the local attack The final score of 93 to 0 eight points shy of the score Tennessee made against the same team would have been much larger if Coach Spiegel had cared to keep his first team in On the other hand the game showed conclusively one thing which has never before characterized the Moccasin squads and has in fact been their persistent presence of abundant substitute material The "drive" of the local teamdid not weaken until the entire third string backfield was in action and even then they gained rapidly The locals showed a stone wall on defense furthermore and the visitors never once gained a first down their longest gain being about nine yards in three downs against the third string men near the close of the second period Be Baylor won a convincing victory over Knoxville High school on the new athletic field yesterday the score being 35 to The Baylor line showed great superiority over that of the up-state team and the victory of the Red and Gray is really traceable to the aggressiveness of the forwards In the backfield all the visitors showed great speed leaving the impression that the backs would have been great ground-gainers had they been given sufficient protection in front The halfbacks made several long runs during the game but the visitors hardly gained an inch through the line Carter was the principal scintillator in the Baylor backfield ably supported by Hall and Whitaker Coach Guerry ran In many subs during the unpleasantness and used twenty players in all The fore the light backs of the visitors could get moving the Moccasins would pile in on them and fling them to the ground In other seasons the Moccasins have been weak on defense What the line will do against opposition as heavy this year remains to be seen but they certainly annihilated weaker opposition yesterday without the least trouble Coach Cunningham of Georg la was in the stand and watched closely the play of the Chattanooga team He learned but little of the team's system 1 BASEBALL 116 Detail at the The best boxing card seen in Chattanooga since the Jake Abel-Joe Mandot fight five years ago is offered Chattanooga fans next Friday night when Grover Hayes the Philadelphia veteran lightweight meets Bennre Palmer the Tucson (Ariz) Mexican As a side issue almost as interesting as the main bout Kid Sweet of Memphis meets Kid Car-lock the local negro champion and for the first time it is said that earlock has an opponent who is worthy of his Steel Chattanooga fans need no introduCtion to Grover Hayes He fought two of the prettiest fights ever seen in a local arena CENTRAL HIGH HAS AT HANDS OF Central High school eleven had one of the biggest "scares" of its early seasoi In yesterday's altercation with Somerset High at Chamberlain field The Itikemen won by 6 to 0 but they came so near not winning that the 'victory left little of elation It was the best football game of the early season both teams playing hard gritty football and swapping blow for blow In the first half the play was largely in Central's favor but in the second Dexheimer's boys spruced up and Central had a hard time staving off a tying touchdown with a possible victory from a kicked goal- The Somerset team evidently has been ably coached by raul Dexheimer the University of Chattanooga star of other seasons They spilled interference grandly and their line kept the edge on the local forwards throughout the melee On offense they nsed Dan McGugin's noted split buck play with deadly effect gaining many yards every time they VA it on The entire backfield seemed to move in unison and with a purpose on defense however they allowed gains the ends seeming to let the Centralites slip by outside tackle though they "dumped" well The showing of the Central line was a distinct disappointment to Central followers but the reconstructed backfield showed more than was expected They got around the ends well and gained eon- sistently though not sensationally They did not attempt anything out of thg ordinary Itevington hardly looks so good at halfback as at fullback but he made some good gains nevertheless Central kicked off as a starter Somerset immediately showed signs of life and hustled up fell fifty yards before being stopped Central -els(' showed activity but was stopped short of a touch aro grmo Score It to Lateral Passes Easily Fathomed by Southerners NEW HAVEN Conn Oct 2--Yale foeball stock took an unexpected drop today when University of 'Virginia's clever and well-balanced eleven won a 10-to0 victory in the Bowl The visitors did not score until the final period Capt Wilson and Guernsey of Yale fumbled a lateral pass near the Blues' goal line and Coolman fell on the ball for a touchdown front which goal was kicked A few minutes later Thurman standing on the forty-yard line and with a stiff wind to aid him booted the ball between the uprights for a field goal Yale threatened to score only once and that was in the first quarter After Yale had made an impressive rush up the field for fifty yards Virginia braced and Guernsey attempted to field goal from the twenty-five-yard line but the kick went wide Yale was outplayed offensively and defensively The Virginians had no difficulty in solving the Blue's passing game while the Yale Blues' passing game while the Yale The work of the Yale line was extremely crude at times but it braeed at junctures Neither team was able to gain consistently so the game resolved itself into a punting duel between Thurman of Virginia and Wilson of Yale with the Laurels going to the former Virginia gained from 150 to twenty yards In the exchanges The visitors' end covered kicks well while Berkley requently eluded the Blue ends for substantial gains The collapse of Yale's offense wfs a bitter disappointment to the Eli stands In the last quarter there were shouts from the students of "we want LeGore" referring to last year's star and got across this time Reese leading the line plungers Vandiver kicked the goal This was the only score in the first half the two teams see-sawing throughout the second period In the third period after a rapid interchange of attack and kick Echo lls blocked Moore's punt down in Chattanooga territory and II Griffin fell on the ball for a touchdown Early in the fourth period the Chattanoogans escaped a shut-out Hamilton intercepted a forward rpass and ran thirty yards to the 10-yard line whence Davis carried it over on two plays Darlington added its final touchdown a few minutes later Griffin intercepted a forward pass and ran forty yards after which Reese sneaked through-for the marker showing of the Baylor team was a pleasant surprise to its friends as the Knoxville team is by no means a weak outfit Notwithstanding counter attractions a good crowd made the journey across the river to see the first game on the new field The going was rather heavy or Baylor have made a larger issued instructions at the outset that nothing but the simplest formations be used Simple end runs straight ahead line bucks and tackle dashes were all that were seen only one forward pass being tried and that from regular formation without a "trick in it" The Moccasins' two new halfbacks Squibbs and Vandiver showed promise of being stars Both of them got around the ends well on offensive and plafed great ball on defense Squibbs intercepted several forward passes Woodworth Pope and Lazard alternated at quarter back and each did some hefty end running Woodworth especially Goodwin did some speeding after he relieved Hampton in the final quarter The big fullback seemed in fine form until he suffered a sprain which rendered him hors de combat for the day Stars in the line were hard to select the many substitutions keeping the forwards all mixed up The forwards charged fiercely and showed evidence of superb team work Unless they show a vastly slower front against their coming experienced opponents the Moccasin line will not allow any liberties taken by anybody this year Russell Carson Newman's punter exhibited the best poise under fire of any of the team He got every kickbff without a foozle though always in the midst of charging Moccasins and many of his boots got good distance in spite of the rush in which they were gotten off Jackson who played upfield tackled well the Moccasins nearly always being forced to hammer lacross and unable to get by with long runs Woodworth was the exception to this rule but the Moccasin captain used sweeping end runs on which he outran his opponent Details of the play were useless Three of the Moccasin scores were made on intercepted forward passes Eldridge making one in this manner The others were made on end runs mostly see-sawed quite a bit before Revington finally bucked it over Beck missed the goal Central maintained its advantage in the third period and time was called with the ball in Central's possession on the Somerset 5-yard line Central received the kick in the second half and was rapidly advancing up field when a fumble lost the ball Using the split buck and a delayed pass around the ends the Somerset lads then hustled down field at a great pace and had Central rooters decidedly nervous As the visitors got in the shadow of the goal posts a close decision deprived them of a probable touchdown and possibly a victory On the fourth down about Central's 15-yard line the visitors essayed a forward pass It was caught by a Central player inside his 5-yard line The Centre lite started up Belt' and took a step or two before be was tackled As he was tackled he fumbled the ball A Somerset player recovered it Referee Wilcox after conference with Hawley Cushman ruled it an incompleted forward pass and the ball went to Central on the 15-yard line The Central backs then immediately carried the oval out of danger and there was no advantage for either team for the remainder of the game The game was
