riot at Andrews field yesterday afternoon when he attempted to "steal" the ball as the game closed Had the Tigers won this act of thievery would have been football etiquette as they only tied it was resented by members of the Chattanoola eleven Fullback Squibb was at Turner's throat in a twinkling followed by several of his teammates Instantly pandemonium reigned Sewanee players rushed to aid of Turner and Chattanooga players took it up for Squibb The latter and Turner were pawing at each other vigorously on the ground The sideline crowd quickly took a hand and surged on10 the field Blows were interchanged Everybody got angry and if a chap couldn't find somebody he knew to hit he just hit anyway Policemen quickly dashed into the maelstrom of flying lists and legs They quelled the belligerent SEWANEE SHOWS EFFECT OF LONG TRIP TIGERS FAIL TO EXHIBIT "PEP" VIRGINIA DOWNS PALMETTOS Athletic officials should never sgain schedule a heart-breaking trip like the one to Texas last week The Tiger eleven at Andrews field yesterday was the most spiritless tired-seeming aggregation that the writer ever saw representing Sewannee Always in former seasons while the Tigers have often been beaten they have shown an abundance of the "old pep" The was not present yesterday The players fumbled time and again and did not go with the old-time speed and dash-Those who saw the Tigers play at Andrews field a year ago against Tennesqee were unanimous in the cry "Watch Sewanee in 1915" It appeared that Cope had a magnificent squad of youngsters who would TIGERS TIED BY Ul CI TEAM Thrilling Scoreless Game at Andrews Field LOCAL ELEVEN OLITRUSHES SEWANEE BY WIDE MARGIN Squibb's Line Plunging and Sutherland's All Round Play Stand and Edmond Fumble alattanooga and Sewanee elevens battled to a thrilling scoreless tie yesterday afternoon at Andrews field The contest while somewhat mediocre in spots and not characterized by the Momitahle fight spirit that usually marks the play of Harris Cope's teams became especially rough and bitter in the second half and when Turner attempted to pilfer the ball as the game finished a riot that threatened for several moments to assume serious proportions resulted In many respects the game was a repetition of the struggle with Georgia except that neither side scored a touchdown Sewanee started off briskly as Georgia though the Tigers were never able to gain over the Moccasins as did Cunningham's team at the start The locals easily repelled the Tiger attack and after the middle of the second period outrushed their opponents at every turn Time and again in the last half Sewanee flung theta back between the -yard and 10-yard lines and Vandiver's attempts at field in wide but the play was always in Tiger territory and Cope's charges never passed the center of the field after the start One Squibb who took laampton's place at fullback was the hero of the day from a Moccasin viewpoint The nafive umer East Tennessee shot into the Sewanee line for many a long ain He brushed aside the redoubtable Turner as if he were a prep school boy and seemed to take particular delight in shooting through the former Georgia tackle to the secondary defense or at least to Dobbins who was backing up the line Whether the hole was there for him or not Squibb was always good for his gain and his elusive body was ever and anon catapulting through groups of struggling ligers It seemed that half a dozen were required to stop him It was one of the greatest exhibitions of line-plunging ever seen on a Chattanooga gridiron quite distancing indeed that of the noted Lindsay for Tennessee last year Another Chattanooga athlete who was conspicuous ivas none other than Satherlatid the veteran who made his 1915 debut The old-timer played his usual great defensive game on end splitting Sewanee interference "spilling" regular: Rnd in addition pulling a couple of hefty forward-passes down out of the ether The entire Chattanooga backfield won deserved plaudits from the multitude Vandiver did some exceptional 'tackle rushing Pope showed ability to get around the ends for short gains and also handled punts up field without a fumble though luck broke against him on several- Goodwin played better defensive ball than offensive an unusual' performanee for the speed merchant In the line Langley more than played even with the great Turner in fact the latter never seemed to get in the game and was given a big cheer in the fourth period when he made his first open field tackle of the game Wyatt also played good ball against the terrible Dobbins and in the center of the line the Moccasin trio held their own In fact the Chattanooga line had the edge on their rivals from the mountain claimed by many to be the best line in the entire south Coach Spiegel and his assistants seemed to have applied inspiration from some quarter to the forwards during the past week the transformation being little less than marvelous Hamel who was Elevated to the Bret team for the Transylvania game put up another creditable game especially in handling forward peeves Sewanee Makes Only Two First Downs During Game 1 The unproductive offense of the Tigers' was a bitter surprise to their supporters From the very first they played a kicking game partly by compulsion and at times rather than to essay rushing They also butter-fingered woefully time and gain where the locals handled the wet ball cleanly For a team that had been "doped" to win by a large margin this defensive policy was disastrous but it most probably was Copes idea to win by one touchdown and to save his team for a future game The Tiger coach doubtlesa soon found that he was lucky to escape being scored on even by using all his repertoire contained The Tier offense only made two first downs dnring the entire game They tried little except line phinging a double pass and One or two end runs from kick formation No forward passes were essayed and Cop' entire reliance seemed to be placed in his line and Clnrkla kicking In the latter respect the Chattanongan who does the the work for the Tiera more than did his duty The wet ball made high lieking impossible bnt Clarke foxily booted low to left and right where it would be difficult to handle the ball nnd in this manner rained many a yard for his team While his kicking was not apectacular to watch from the sideline it was productive of substantial results and netted the Tizera far more than did Vandiver's kicks for Chattanone --thn117h VRIld 5-'5g were up to tRndarrl as for that matter Dobbins and Edmond Stars on Defense Since offensive stars on the Sewenee roster were nil bouquets can only be passed for defensive play Edmond was the leader in stopping the Moccasin rushes the left end of the Tigers being their mainstay on defense Nearly all of the few 'foccasin gains on end runs were around the other side of the line TIGERS TIED ri tt Ca TEAM a In by an 0 for Baylor Sewanee started the third period with a rush that sounded like defeat for Guerry's pupils Bailey brought Baylor's kick-off back forty yards Two forward passes Bailey to Rogers and Rogers to Bailey with end runs by Bailey and Stone brought the ball well up into Baylor territory Plunges put the ball on Baylor's 25-yard line for a third down with only one yard to go The Baylor line stiffened beautifully and threw the Tigers back for 'downs An interchange of punts followed and then Hall broke loose He made two runs of ten yards mixed in with other gains but Sewanee finally held The Little Tigers couldn't gain by straight football but another forward pass Rogers to Bailey gained ten yards A moment later Bob Hill intercepted a pass and dashed down field thirty yards to Sewanee's 242-yard line Three runs by Hall may be others yards for a touchdown Collins' fumble of a punt in the second period resulted in Washington and Lee's third touchdown night Halfback Sweetland scored on a short end run Then Cornell woke up Its backfield battered the Washington and Lee line and Capt Barrett made two touchdowns making the score at the end of the first half 21 to 20 in favor of the southerners In the third period Washington and Lee was again helpless atainst Capt Barrett and he marched from Cornell's 5-yard line for a touchdown Ripping the NVashington and Lee line for long gains in the fourth period Collins and Barrett each scored Cool Cornell's center was banished for rough play and Cornell was penalized half the distance to the goal Capt Barrett of Cornell and John Barrett of Washington and Lee were the stars The Red and White captain scored 34 points of Cornelrs total in kicking Then came a "break" that might have been fatal Clark punted and the ball rolled to the 2-yard line Pope waited for it Three plays nut the ball on the 16-yard line whence Herring dropped back to the 25- yard line and tried a drop kick The offering was short however and Chattanooga took the ball on her 5-yard line (Tennessee) Time of 12 minutes AUSTIN Tex Nov 13--Straight football won for Texas over Alabama on Clark field here today 20 to 0 the Longhorns piling up all their points 13 plunges through the Alabama line and long end runs Both elevens tried the forward pass repeatedly but only once successfully and it led to only a temporary gain Texas abandoned the aerial style of play early in the game and marched down the field by a series of gains through the opposing line for the first touchdown near the end of the first period The same tactics added to the score in the second quarter Texas' third touchdown was the result of end runs the most spectacular of which was made by Littlefield who dodged seven Alabama players and ran fifty-three yards Unable to gain through the Texas line Alabama resorted to kicking in the fourth quarter Vandergraff three times trying for geld goals from difficult angles and distances He failed only by ITHACA Nov the score of 21 to 7 against them in the second period Cornell came back at Washington and Lee today and when the final whistle blew led the plucky Virginians by 40 to 21 The game although loosely played by Cornell in the first period was full of thrills Washington and Lee got the jump on the Ititacans in the first period when Left Halfback Collins fumbled the first kickoff and Washington and Lee recovered the ball on Cornell's 15-yard line Quarterback Bagley and Left Halfback John Barrett executed two forward passes for a touchdown A few minutes later Cornell after receiving the kickoff rushed the ball to the Washington and Lee 30-yard line and Capt Barrett tied the score with a touchdown Washington and Lee scored again when John Barrett on receiving the kickoff ran 100 every time Edmonds end was run there was trouble The youngster has not been press-agentect much this season but Its hard to see why he has been omitted if yeaterday's performance is a criterion of his ability Capt Taylor Dobbins played one of his regular games except that he seemed to be a little bit tired and oceasionally let the redoubtable Squibb pound out an extra yard or so after the line failed to stop him and it was put up to the captain backing up tu stop the Moccasin fullback's rush The remainder of the Sewanee line as aforementioned didn'ti show the dash expected Leftwich broke throngh once or twice but In the main the line was valuable only after the Moccasins passed their 20-yard line Then In the pinch the Tiger forwards held like a stone wall Moccasin Forward Passes Again Feature Coach Speigel's forward passes came back into their own and were instrumental in a bunch of gains for the Moccasins One of them to Sutherland put the ball on the Tigers' 10-yard line for a first down in the second period but tmfortnnately someone had been off-side and the bell was brought back This penalty killed a probable least fighting chance The wet field which made good drop-kicking impossible probably kept each team from scoring Herring missed one pretty chance right in front-of the goal posts on the 20-yard line Vandiver missed no less than three only one of them even crossing the goal line The ball was heavy an dslippery as was the gronnd on which it dropped While there was a lot of rough work on both sides the officials were lenient and did not penalize anyone for the nears-lugging Only one penalty -was enforced during the game the Moccasins being taxed on one of their long forward passes Luck Breaks With Tigers Early Minutes The contest opened most inauspiciously for Chattanooga After Vandy kicked off Clark punted immediately The low offering bounded over Pope's head and finally settled on Chattanooga's 1S-yard 65 yards advantage Thus In a twinkling play was transferred into Chattanooga territory The Moccasins immediately brought a huzza plunging to a first down but were forced to punt thereafter There was interchange a couple of hefty plunges by Squibb negativing Sewanee's gain PENNSYLVANIA AND MICHIGAN FAIL TO SCORE IN ANNUAL GAME rnILAnnTAPrITA Nov and Michigan fought their annual football battle on 'Franklin field to--day and neither side was able to score The game was a disappointment to the followers of both teams Pennsylvania entered the contest a slight favorite while the Michigan supporters felt confident that despite their disastrous season the Wolverines would pull themselves together in their last game of the year and take a victory west with them Both teams put up fairly good football Pennsylvania had more chances to score than Michigan but whelf in the last MINNESOTA DOWNS CHICAGO ON FIELD
