Public Victims of a most artistic deception practiced during a meteorie career ae teacher in Oentral High school people of Chattanooga and particularly the students of that institution have bidden a final farewell to Prof Harrington He has gone' and his place on the faculty of Central will be vacated without the formality of a resignation Citizens in all walks of life public and private have been imposed upon by this man to an extent that can hardly be realized Ho was everything be 'claimed not to be and 'was nothing that he claimed to be except that he was a man of the highest attainments as a scholar and of the most unusual ability as a teacher Men and women who were bis friends and supporters but have been duped by him can have the consolatoin that they are not lonesome for the reason that the community was practically unanimous in his stipport All doubt as to the intentions of Prof Harrington to return to Chattanooga after what purported to be a trip to Cincinnati accompanying his father are dispelled by the revelations of the past two days- He will not return He has in fact gone to his former home in Charlestown Masa near Boston He was likely aboard the Federal express which was wrecked Tuesday morning at Bridgeport Conn That he was not injured in case he was in that wreck is evidenced from the published lists of the dead and wounded Prof Harrington fooled his friends in his mode of departure Sunday night He knew then that he would not return and be secretly took with him his private effecta that were worth the trouble It Is now learned that one of the students of Central High served notice on Harrington last Saturday that he would be given until Monday morning to absent himself from the city The warning did not require a repetition When he went to the station with his father he took with him his own baggage and other private effects despite the statement that he was going to Cincinnati and would return by Wednesday night Monday night a telegram or two received in the city from the professor Istated that be had decided to go oti to Boston with his father who be paid had been overcome with the beat in Cincinnati He also telegraphed one of the boys to look after his house until his return As a result of the disclosures of the past two days a vacancy will be declared on the faculty of Central and in due time a teacher will be found for the department and the Harrington incident will be closed Harrington came to Chattanooga from some mysterious from the inability of anybody now to remember of having ever heard him say just where He was found by Prot Brown and elected by the board a year ago From the start of his work at Central be demonstrated his ability to occupy any place in a school of that sort The verdict of all concerned was that he was the strongest man as teacher and executive ever employed in the schools of this county Two months ago he could have secured the best endorsement ever written Of a teacher But all the time he led a dual life and well did be protect his secret He made enemies who have of late made bitter war upon him but none of the fight was based upon any of the things that are known now At the same time he made influential friends who supported him unconditionally and this was because they were equally with his enemies in ignorance of the man's inner character All now admit that be fooled everybody in most artistic fashion Last night it was learned that there will be a later chapter to Harrington's operations particularly in a financial way for the reason that somebody will have to take care of a batch of accounts that were left unpaid despite the written statement of Harrington that all such billshas been taken care of and that there was nothing against any department with which he had been connected It is probable that there will be printing bills engraving bills and other bills in evidelce befdre many days that the school authorities will have to considerand take care of in some way But it can be definitely stated that ProfHarrington is no more so far as Central high school is con cerned The same is true regarding his Sunday school class and the pulpits he has filled nam niieu AGNES SCOTT COLLEGE) from Atlanta Two trolley Imes 1066 feet Attractive campus 12 8 buildings recently completed $125000 Excellent gymnasium Philosophy Science Home Emmoodes colleges Deader Ga- i A i 1 I 1 i Chattanooga Sends Greetings Upon Ms Election 1 GOVERNOR EXCHANGED FORA STATESMAN New Senator Especially Uriect to Come to This City Next Friday and Meet His sion of Terminals There was much rejoicing in Chattanooga yesterday when it became known that Gov Hoke Smith of Georgia bad been elected 'United State' senator He has many warmfriends and ardent admirers in Chattanooga and his manifestations of fairness toward this city especially in the efforts to have the state of Georgia move its terminals out of the city limits have stamped him as a broad gauge man as well as one of business discernment and one competent to handle any of the complex questions of state that might arise Many tlegrapas from Chattanooga friends went forward to the new senator yesterday Among these was one from the Chattanooga chamber of corn-mere reading as follows: Chattanooga Tenn July 121911 Hon Hoke Smith United States Senator-elect Atlanta Ga: The citizens of Chattanooga and district join me in extending sincere congratulations to the state of Georgia upon their selection of United States senator We are sure they will realize and feel the loss of a most faithful governor but will feel repaid by having given the nation a most excellent statesman If possible please arrange to come to Chattanooga with the legislative committee that we may shake hands with you and extend our heartfelt congratulations permanently BROCK President Chamber of Commerce It is felt in Chattanooga that the elevation of Gov Smith to the United States senatorship is a recognition of one who is already on the most friendly terms with this city and immediate section and that it will tend to intensify his friendship if anything There are a number of important matters in which the officials of Georgia and the city of Chattanooga are jointly interested such as the management of Chickamauga Park the movement to obtaM a brigade post and the better handling of Georgia railroad property in this city and for this reason if for no other it is regarded as fortunate that friendly interests have dominated the Georgia legislature at this time The situation seems to be that Gov Smith will remain in the position of chief executive until late in the coming fall probably until December The election of his successor as governor will therefore occur probably sixty days after he vacates the office the speaker of the senate filling the position in the interim As The Times has heretofore predicted "Little Joe" Brown is proving to fie a formidable candidate though other aspirants will be in the calculations The genuine public desire in Chattanooga is that Gov Smith may see his way clear to come to Chattanooga Friday- night with the Georgia legislative committees and remain Saturday for the inspection of properties here pursuant to the conversion of the Western Atlantic railroad yards into business blocks From a number of sources he is being urged to come There is a possibility that he will construe the business as purely that of the committees and may therefore feel a relutance to take a hand in it at the present time Information here yesterday was that at least seventy-five members of the legislature can be counted on and -from that number up to 200 More discussion is being heard every day as to the available land for terminals if the railroad yards are moved away from the center of the city It seems to be a contest between two sites both of which are in the direction of Boyce one being the tract for which -( Watches Now We- want to talk to you about that you can Rumor That Georgia Power Com PettY Wants to Come In In a quiet way it is being tipped off that the Georgia -Power company of Atlanta in figuring on getting necessary franchise" in Hamilton coimty and Chattanooga for the Purpose of putting an additional electric power nervice into this city and ssetion Just how fir the negotiations have progressed wad' not learned yesterday but the fact that Broushton an official of the contract department of the company has been quietly circulating among the business men of the city for a few days lends color to the statement that something is about to be pulled off It is stated that the Georgia Power company is planning horsepower from streams in Central Georgia which will be far in excess of the Atlanta market to consume and the supposition! that the visit of Mr Broughton has ekpmething to do with a possible overflow supply of the electric juice to Chattanoogans who may want it If this proves to be the case the first ofildal act of the Atlanta company will naturally be to get out after franchises from the county and city CALDWELL AND TEMPLE INVEST ON BROAD STREET WILL PUT UP BUILDING FOR CIIATTAN0001 AUTO CO ThreeStory Fireproof Structure Which With Lot Will Cost Thirty Thousand Dollars A new thirty-thousand-dollar investment on Broad street is to be made by Messrs Caldwell and Walter Temple These two citizens own the large lot on the west side of Broad immediately adjoining the Hippodrome -on this lot they Will at once build a three-story and basement fireproof building to be used exclusively by the Chattanooga Automobile company lessees The building will be 60x108 feet in dimensions the outside material of 'brick and floors of concrete It is estimated that the cost of the investment including the lot will be $30000 The building is to be completed so that the Chattanooga Automobile company may move in by Nov 1 WHY COUNTY COURT OMITTED STEELE HOME Explanation of Finance Committee for No Appropriation A majority of the members of the finance committee of the county court decided that there were more worthy objects of charity in the county than the Steele orphanage and hence decided to leave that institution out of the annual budget according to a statement made by one of the raembers of the finance committee yesterday This member stated that the committee had been informed that the children at the orphanage were not properly fed not properly clothed and that unseemly debaucheries and Holy Roller meetings were carried on almost nightly there He said that the committee bad been informed that the children were not taught anything that they were compelled to work hard and that they were given just barely enough of the coarsest kind of food to keep body and soul together Word had been received by the committee this member declared that the children do not get the benefit of the money that is appropriated to the school and that Mrs Steele raises large sums in the north and east just bow much no one knows for which no account is ever rendered He said that the couhty court had no means of learning what has been done with the money given the home in the past and decided to cut it out of the budget Part of the information it is said was supplied by Miss Maud Steck a young woman who came down here from the north to aid in running the school and who went to Birmingham from here It is said that Miss Stec charged while here that the children were beaten inadequately fed and clothed and that they failed to get a due share of the money contributed to the school This young woman stayed awhile but finally left after having it is said some trouble with Mrs Steele The leaving of the orphanage out of the budget has caused a great deal of comment CONFUSING STREET NAMES Several in St Elmo That Ought to Be Changed A complete renaming of streets of St Elmo now that an eta of conspicuous development ha a taken possession of that suburb is advocated by soma of the citizens particularly those who have to do with handling the United States Mr Billingsley the letter carrier for that territory said to a Times I reporter: "There is too much confusion between the names of streets in St Elmo and In the city of Chattanooga This is particularly true of Georgia avenue It often occurs that mail directed to persons living on Georgia avenue in St Elmo gets to Georgia avenue in Chattanooga and is delayed for days at a time Other St Limo streets whose names duplicate streets in Chattanooga are Main Union Henderson Willow Carolina and Harris There are probably others Ily opinion Is that all the cross streets in St Elmo should be named numerically continuing from the Chat tanooga 'numbered streets at the 'cor noes tion- If the last street south in 1 Chattanooga is Twenty-seventh let the first street la St Ehno be Twenty eighth etc and so on to the Georgieline- 4 'As to the venni'' there is also a confusion It should be designated' which Is Barris avenue and which Is Temlessee avenue Another name should be-zgrren Georgia avenue but Itdo not think the name of St Elmo avenue as Ihaa been suggested would remedy the confusion The Business league not do any better thing than to take vp this matter of street names and fix them all" FUND PLEDGES Young Women's ChrigtiallAroociation building fund pledgesfirst ISayment due 3-nly 15 Can be paid at office of Capt Tyler: 21t) Hamilton Bank
