That's what everyone who knew him says now of Stephen Puckett. Stephen, 15, had reason to complain: for most of his life he had muscular dystrophy. He hadn't walked for the past seven years; he has lived most of his life in hospital beds, growing progressively weaker and less able to move.

Lately he couldn't use his hands unless he was sitting up. He died Friday after spending the last two years in Ferguson rehabilitation center at Santa Cruz county hospital According to his physician, Dr. Donald Miller, Stephen died of a complication believed to be a rare and unusual form of muscular dystrophy. Final report are not yet in. But there anything wrong with Stephen's heart in the ways that count.

"He had a heart of gold, he was always doing things for other said Mrs. Marietta Emrick. Mrs. Emrick has instructed him in regular school lessons for an hour each day for the past two vears. "When I broke the clip on my pen he insisted I take his," she said.

He knew it is important for her to be able to clip her pen to her hospital smock when she enters the TB ward at the hospital. A patient admired some cufflinks Stephen had made during crafts class; he presented them to the person. "He had a wonderful perception of colors," remarked his volunteer art teacher, Mrs. Carmen Allen. His art work decorates hospital walls.

"He was always so cheerful he smiled a lot and he joked with the other patients," noted Mrs. Gene vieve Hamilton, supervising nurse at the center. Even as he died Stephen was looking forward to going to Camp Harmon in a few weeks; he also was studying watch repair techniques, hoping to work at it someday. "He brought a bit of cheerful youth to this rehabilitation center we will miss him," said Chaplin Duane Adamson. The chaplain conducted a memorial service Sunday for patients unable to attend the funeral.

Stephen's funeral is scheduled for today. The hospital chaplain and orderlies will be his pallbearers. A Lutheran pastor, the Rev. George Flora, and a Seventh-Day Adventist elder, John M. Ner- ness, will conduct final services for the boy.

But before he died, Stephen got two of his dearest wishes, Los. Gatos hospital yesterday evening after a two-car crash on Highway 17 at Cloud Nine res taurant at the summit. California Highway patrolmen said James Judson, 52, of Los Gatos, was entering the roadway in his station wagon to proceed south.
