EDITED BY HELEN CAMPBELL activities Rebekahs Postpone Card Party Until March 1 9th' The card party announced by Ocean Queen Rebekah lodge for Saturday evening has been postponed until March 19 The meeting tomorrow night Instead will be devoted to business matters and will begin at 7:30 in Odd temple Mary Tucker will serve as chairman of the social hour which follows NATIVE DAUGHTERS TO BE HOSTS TO GRAND OFFICERS Since leaving San Pedro less than three years ago Mr Adamic has won renown as one of leading authors and students in his particular field His has been hailed as one of the most important and disturbing nonfiction work published in America in 1931 His second book in the is now on the press and soon will be ready for issue Many of Mr short stories have San Pedro as their locale notably and Assassin of His was selected for anthology of 1931 as one of the 12 best stories published in America Mr Adamic has many friends in San Pedro who will be glad to hear of his great success in his chosen field Members of the Sewing club of Christine Whitman Tent No 27 Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War were delightfully entertained at the home of their president Mrs Virginia Bruckner 643 West Tenth street Thursday with a delicious covered dish -luncheon as the midday feature A taper-lighted cake noting the birthday of Mrs Mae Leonardo president of the tent served as the final course The surprise package was won by Mrs Hazel Lund the president of the tent Mrs Mae Leonardo was presented with a gift in celebration of her natal date and Mrs Emma Robinson whose birthday also was celebrated received a lovely vase as a gift from Mrs Leonardo The special a pair of handmade pillow cases was awarded to Mrs Edna Heiberg i Those who shared the pleasure of the and bridge party was entertainment offered by Mrs Varnado to a group of friends Thursday afternoon at home 1367 Twelfth street Springtime flowers were used in attractive appointment at the luncheon will be held at 8 tonight at Point Fermin Cafe where the presence of all members is requested i Louis Adamic former resident of San Pedro and one-time employe of San Pedro harbor pilot office now living in New York City has ust been awarded the Guggenheim Literary Fellowship for 1932 This award the highest prize in America and second only internationally to the Nobel prize recently bestowed on Sinclair Lewis carries with it a year in Europe and is given both for recognition of past excellence in literature and prospective accomplishments During his stay abroad Mr Adamic will specialize industrial and sociological research In which he is considered an American authority The results of his study will be embodied in a series of articles in one of our national magazines and will later appear in book form Junior High P-T A to Hear Talk on Juvenile Protection on March 8 Miss Bea Whittlesey vice principal at the Richard Henry Dana Junior high school wiE speak on Juvenile at the March meeting of the Parent-Teacher association of this school to be held at 2:15 Tuesday March 8 Frederick Banta also of the Dana faculty will urge the beautification of gardens for the Olympiad games which is a part of a district-wide program sponsored by the Parent-Teacher associations of the Tenth district Music will be offered by the Glee club and tea will be served by Mrs Allen and her ever before Artist Captures Concert Audience With Brilliance of Performance Last Eve The community warehouse concert given in the First Methodist church Thursday evening conceded by those fortunate enough to hear it to have been one of the most brilliant musical events ever presented in San Pedro offered opportunity for many local people to hear for the first time the famous concert pianist Mme Teala Bellini This artist whose playing shows temperament emotional and intellectual grasp and unusual technical resources presented two difficult groups with the skill and assurance which marks her work with the best talent of genius She was most enthusiastically ap plauded by the large audience which made the concert a success from the standpoint of warehouse contributions Another artist who was hardly less heartily received was Miss Esther Wehman whose rendition of at the pipe organ was a fitting prelude to this noteworthy program 1 Jean Colwell Houghton always a favorite was charming in her interpretation of the popular Old Sweet with Mary Elsa Hoffman at the piano and her quartet of four lovely young girls Norma Becker Helen Stewart Wil-mot Becker and Evelyn Van Horn were well received Tenor solos by Robert McNamara were roundly applauded and especial praise was given to the orchestra whose numbers under Robert direction satisfactorily rounded out the diversified evening A Henning in happy vein as moster of ceremonies in presenting the artists for the second time gave the audience opportunity to express by vigorous applause appreciation of their contribution to the
