NEWS-PILOT SAN PEDRO CALIFORNIA SATURDAY EVENING MARCH 18 1939 Pag 3 Groups Schedule Outstanding Programs Degree of Honor Fetes Mothers of Members at Program Meeting An open meeting of the San Pedro Degree -of Honor at which mothers or mothers of the members were honored guests was held Thursday evening at the Woman's clubhouse Minnie Smith president of the organization presided at the meeting At the close of the business session she presented a program dedicated to the mothers Each member was asked to introduce her mother who responded with a nursery rhyme Taking part in the program were Marilyn and Billy Carnahan who entertained with dances Mrs Mary Jane Carnahan who gave a pianologue Billie Land who played two piano solos one his own composition and Minnie Smith who read two poems Community singing was led by Ma-belle Dominguez Refreshments were served to members and guests in the sun-room where the table was decorated with shamrocks and smilax Lillian Land and Mayfield Morehouse were hostesses The drill team directed by Ann Lindner practiced its drill for the state convention to be held in Los Angeles June 4 Needlework Department Will Send Two Girls to Summer Camps At this meeting members of the Needlework department of the San Pedro club voted to send two girls to summer camp One girl will be sent to the Girl Scout camp and the other to Camp Torqua The department will sponsor a card party after Lent in order to raise money to help finance the campers During the season two layettes have been completed by the department and help has been given to seven needy families Mrs Millidge Day chairman of the department appointed a nominating committee at the meeting which includes Mrs Kerr Mrs Morrison and Mrs Clayson The committee appointed to take care of the camp arrangements includes Mrs Robert Herron Mrs Feman and Mrs Shaffer YWCA Announces Preliminary Plans for Camp Torqua The camp committee of the YW CA has completed preliminary plans for its summer camp which is located at Catalina Island This is the tenth summer that the camp has been maintained by the YW CA It is under the supervision of the camp committee composed of Mrs Lazard Lippman chairman Mesdames Robert Herron Eloi Amar Edward Haley Alfred Jorgenson Allender Grow William McAllister and Nellie Williams The camp is open for five weeks during the summer the first period beginning July 11 The camp closes August 18 The rates this year will be the same as in former years The camp committee has voted to make a substantial reduction to harbor district girls who register before May 15 Further information regarding the dates and rates of camp may be had by calling the YW CA Girls from the ages of eight to 16 years are accepted as campers The program is planned to satisfy the needs and desires of all Selected college students serve as councilors The program includes such interesting activities as swimming boating life-saving courses handcraft campcraft hiking horse back riding dramatics music etc Miss Katharine Perine Girl Reserve secretary will again serve as director of the camp Mrs Lippman camp chairman expressed the desire that many harbor district girls will avail themselves of the fine opportunities that Camp Tor-qua offers Woman's Club Topic Mrs Goldsmith to Be Friday Speaker Two of San leading women's organizations the San Pedro Woman's club and the Friday Morning Study club have outstanding programs scheduled for their next meetings Tuesday afternoon the Woman's club will present Dr William Ashe-Everest who will discuss "Egypt and the Mrs Lillian Burkhart Goldsmith returns next week few her second lecture before the Friday Study club Of great interest and educational value is Dr lecture according to reports from clubs already priviledged to hear him The speaker is former European adviser to Prince Yusseff Kamel of Egypt Dr Ashe-Everest will illustrate his fascinating topic with a chart showing the scientific nature of the interior of the great pyramid of Gizeh its passageways and the chamber The speaker will be presented by Mrs Harry Summers program chairman following a business meeting at which Mrs Alfred Jorgensen president will preside The meeting will convene at 2 at tire clubhouse Tea will be served in the sunroom at the close of the program Hostesses for the day are Mrs Scarborough Mrs Ballinger Mrs Goodwin and Mrs Maude Rich At the Friday Morning Study club Mis Goldsmith will give one of the dramatic readings for which she is so famous as well as discussing world affairs With the rush of important world events that have taken place within the last few days members of the club are looking forward with keen interest to her discussion In addition to the speaker Mrs Holland program chairman of the club will present Marilyn Woodruff who will play a violin selectkv and Dorothy Woodruff who will play a group of piano solos Mrs A Dagoberg president will conduct the business session which is scheduled to Juliette Pierce Memorial Scholarship fund accepts from Mrs McCaffrey welfare chairman of the Assistance League of San Pedro a check for two hundred dollars that organization's gift to the fund The student personnel during the second semester Two youngsters having reached kindergarten age are now attending other schools These alumni are Charles Haynes and Lois Isert New students are Stephen Interpreter Gives Inspiring Talk at Rotary Ann Luncheon A spiritual interpretation of the popular current book which made the story live for those who had not read it and brought new meanings to those who had was given Thursday afternoon by Ruth Cornell Fuller before San Pedro Rotary Anns and their guests The interpreter was presented by Mrs Harry Summers program chairman at the annual reciprocity luncheon held at the Palos Verdes Country club In addition to her inspiring discussion of Mrs Fuller gave an equally deep and significant interpretation of Tides of Mont San Mrs Fuller in addition to her rare understanding of human emotions strengths and frailties has the power to express herself in simple and direct form A sense of the dramatic adds much to the interest of her interpretations Mrs Summers also presented a short musical program sent from the Porter School of Music Norma Arwood 15-year-old lyric soprano sang several selections which were well received She was accompanied at the piano by Lois Anne Balsley Elinor Zankich supported her in one number with a violin obllgatto Mrs James Mee president of Rotary Ann presided at the meeting and welcomed the guests Approximately 70 with approximately 50 present including visitors from Lomita Gardena Torrance and Los Angeles Luncheon was served at noon by the hostesses Mrs Holland and Mrs Holger Jensen Devotions were led by the Rev Fredrik Enge-bretsen Mrs Larson sang with Mrs Dorff at the piano Mrs Olaf Halvorson of Hunting-ton Park gave an entertaining talk telling of her experiences and observations during her recent visit with her husband to the island of Java in the East Indies and a vivid description of India particularly the city of Benares A short business session was conducted by Fredrik Engebret-sen Reports of the work done by the society during the past month were given and plans for the future were laid It was decided to hold the annual spring dinner during the month of April The officers were asked to serve as the committee on arrangements Post-Nuptial Shower Honors Mrs Kefner The committee of the Southern Counties Gas company chose the Pacific Coast club in Long Beach Thursday evening as the scene
