Hazleton Standard-Speaker, Saturday, April 20, 1996 Former PM says he was framed MONTREAL (AP) Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, testifying in his $36-million libel suit against the government, said Friday he was the victim of a set-up. Mulroney, who headed a Conservative government from 1984 to 1993, claims the Justice Department and Royal Canadian Mounted Police libeled him by alleging in supposedly confidential documents that he had received kickbacks in 1988 linked to Air Canada's purchase of 34 Airbus jets. No formal charges have been filed against Mulroney. The allegation against him was in a letter leaked by an unidentified party that government investigators sent to Swiss authorities as part of a request to freeze certain bank accounts.
