Card of Thanks Thanks to each and everyone Vho assisted in any way at the time of my accident December 31, 1970 and following hospitalization. •]' ' Thanks to friends, relatives bid neighbors for cards, flowers and visits, calls! and so forth. These messages of cheer will ever be remembered. Sincerely Mitchell S. Kelley fox Relief For Families Abandoned By a Parent ] The Tax-Reform-Act of 1969 provides additional tax relief for families that have been abandoned by a parent. 'The law enables a married 'individual to file under the status of an unmarried per-/ son if certain requirements are met This permits the abandoned spouse to take full advantage of the new "low income allowance" provision or the standard deduction as are allowed single individuals. It also enables the parent to use Head of Household tax rates if he or she qualifies. The latter rates are. lower than those for 'j "single" , individuals or • i "married persons filing separately" which would otherwise have to be used. j Conditions that must be met; to qualify under this hew tax relief provision are: 1. The abandoned spouse | must file a separate j return; ' 2. 1 Maintain as his or her ; home . a household ] which constitutes for : more than one-half of : the taxable year the principle place of abode of a dependent son, daughter, stepson, or stepdaughter; 3. Be entitled to the dependency deduction for a son, daughter, step-., son or stepdaughter; I 4. Furnish more than one-half the cost of - maintaining the house: hold and, 5. During the entire tax. able year the indi- • vidual's. spouse must not have.been a member of that household. The point to remember if you qualify as a "married individual living apart" is that you may also qualify for the lower "Head of Household" tax rates. Review your instructions carefully for the requirements that must be met for use of these rates, you may save tax dollars. Additional Moving Expenses Now Deductible If you moved to a new residence in 1970 due to a change in your work location, you may be able to deduct your moving expenses. The Tax] Reform Act of 1969 not only liberalized rules on deducting moving expenses, but extended the deduction to self-employed persons. :Dedu:tibie items include the cost of transporting yoursel: and members of your household, your household goods and personal effects, and the cost of meals and lodging en route. In addition, the law as changed permits the deduction of I two other types of expenses, but only for persons who have already obtained employment at a. hew. location..These include pre, move house-hunting trips and temporary living expenses at the new location for up to 30 days while looking for a permanent place to reside. Expenses related to seU- ing a residence, such as broker's commissions, or for settling a lease may also be] deductible. The combined categories of pre- move : house-hunting,. temporary living expenses, and house selling or. lease expenses may not exceed $2,500 J with the. deductions for house-hunting and temporary living expenses limited to $1,000. J For you to qualify for the -moving expense/ deduction you must meet both a distance requirement anda full- time work requirement The new law has changed the distance requirement so that your new place of work must be 50 1 miles, farther from your former home than your " former place of work. The'law now also provides t any amounts received or accured by you from your employer as a payment or I ; uge 7 reimbursement of moving expenses must be included in your gross income. Internal Revenue Service Publication 521, Tax Information on: Moving Expenses, explains the "distance" and "work" requirements in detail. If you have moved in the past year you will find this free booklet very helpful. To obtain a free copy mail a post card to your District-Director of Internal Revenue.
