Lee, DISH TOWEL "NE of the landmarks in Dauphin County is Wenrich's Church, located in that eastern part of the county which is rich in historic lore.

The church was given the name of a family which has been associated with the history of the church from its beginning, and which family itself has lived in the locality of the church almost from the first settlement of the district. Back of the Wenrich's who settled in Dauphin County is an interesting story, some of which has to be guessed and the rest is based on known records. In 1709, after the wars of Louis the 14th, King of France, had devastated that region of the Rhineland known as the Palatinate, thousands of impoverished Palatines fled to Holland and then to England, with the assistance of the English government under Marlborough and Queen Anne. Back of the original offer of a haven to these people, crushed under the weight of years and years of warfare, was the idea that quite a few of them could be sent to the American colonies as settlers. As far as the Palatines themselves were concerned, they had been hearing for years of the wonderful country of Pennsylvania.

William Penn had visited Germany several times and several companies had been formed in Germany to arrange for sending settlers to America. However only those who had settled Germantown had come. But in 1709, when some 13,500 of the Palatines of all ages were in England, seeking a place to go to in the new world, William Penn was in financial difficulties and in no position to aid the impoverished Palatines get to the western world. So instead of going to Pennsylvania, those who did reach America were sent to New York and were settled in the Mohawk Valley and adjacent localities. Among these Palatines who went to England in 1709 and then to New York in 1712, were the families of Benedict Wen-nerich and Balthasar Wennerich.

Their names appear in the lists of these Palatine settlers New York in 1710 and in 1712. That of Benedict Wennerich is missing from the list of settlers in the New York settlement in 1717. In some manner, this Benedict Wennerich had come to Pennsylvania, for in 1716, 250 acres of land immediately southeast of Lancaster on the Conestoga Creek, was surveyed to Benedict Wenrich, whose name appears in the tax for what was called Conestoga Township, while all the lands along the Susquehanna were still part of Chester County. In 1734, Benedict Wenrich sold his land on the Conestoga and disappears from that locality, while the name of Wenrich is listed among the settlers in the Swatara valley. As these too came from New York, although much later, no doubt Wenrich rejoined his old friends in the new settlement.
