at the Beacon Drug Store and the Public Library Established April 17 1999 Daily Series Vol 6 10 SUCKERS ARE 19 RE SHOWN WHAT Determination of Loan Committee to Expose The facts Determination to go after loan slackers was reached last night at a meeting of the precinct captains Every captain was present with the exception of two who were kept away by illness It was an earnest and serious gathering' of citizens who were not discouraged but who mean business for the rest of the campaign They do not intend that peace piffle or the influenza shall prevent San Pedro from attaining its tiuota So far as they can they will make this a 10(1-town The committee was authorized to publish the names of those who refuse information when approached who in any way manifest hostility to the loan and they make no secret that some of the solicitors have come' Into contact with pro-Germanism so pronounced it will receive official attention This afternoon a vigilance committee is going the rounds It is made up of three resolute men whose names are withheld because they desire to do their delicate work without publicity It is proposed to get after such residents as are known to be able to subscribe and have declined or who have fat bank accounts and have-" sought to get by with the minimum One man' has $50000 in a Los Angeles bank His subscription so far has been $50 The committee is not going blindly and i3 not to wrong anybody but equally determined that slackers shall reform or be exposed i For each remaining day -of the drive there will be different vigilance committees It is proposed to publish a list of subscriptions beginning with $1-000 $500 $250 and running down to $50 This will not be a complete list and the man who subscribed $50 when this was all that it is felt he could do will not find his name in it The idea is to let the public be the judge as to whether those able to take larger amounts have done their' duty in this crisis The committee went over the precincts carefully and found that they had been almost completely covered High school boys and girls have volunteered to help at headquarters this relieving the committee of much embarrassment A decision was reached not to employ school pupils to sell bonds as was done on list and the man who subscribed the third loan Boy scouts will take an active part from -now on Troops 1 and 2 will cover a large territory including Terminal island Each boy scout will endeavor to bring in ten subscriptions The scouts of the Presbyterian church will look after Point Fermin All have been in- 7 structed where to assemble to get their orders At the close of business last night the sales had totaled $206-300 The biggest subscriptions so far have been the following: Union Oil $5000 Seacoast Canning Company $5000 Wood Lumber Company $8740 Odd Fellows $100000 Iri addition to this $5000 of the Standard Oil Company the manufacturing department has subscribed $6950 There are 39 employes and the average is $159 per man The sales department has subscribed $2-400 15 employees average $160 per man The marine department which has two men and each subscribed $200 A subscription of $5000 is expected also from the Boilermakers and Iron shipbuilders In the Los Angeles yard the amount of subscriptions totaled $689000 are striving to make this yard go over the top with subscriptions aggregat ing a million said Dunkeriee assistant secretary today While this is a big undertaking considering the number of men we employ I believe we can make it Our men are responding to the emergency splendidly and we have reason to be proud of what we are SPANISH REACHES TOWN ON SCHEDULE Public Meetings Taboo and Halls and Churches Ordered Closed has made its here Even among those have it the opinion persists it is nothing but the malevolent malady known years ago a3 grippe and shortened through to plain But matter what the name the mi-that have been sweeping have arrived It is estimated that there are 150 cases in San Pedro The effect of the situation is felt by the community far more by reason of precautions taken than by the ailment itself A rigorous closing of all places in which people are wont to congregate has been ordered No theatre may open its doors after 6 this evening The same rule applies to churches Public meetings of any sort are forbidden This spoils an entertainment and dance that the Knights of Columbus had planned for tonight in Liberty Auditorium at which Joseph Scott was to he the speaker The Jugo-Slavs were to have gathered on behalf of the Liberty Loan and this will not be permitted Even the open air meeting that was to have been a feature of Saturday at the plaza a point at which the launching across the channel may be viewed to advantage had to he called off The same is true of any proposed crowd There may be no formal meetings in doors or out Medical men have contended that even it the influenza appeared in this section its force would be light and its stay short and they adhere to this opinion They had been in hopes that it would not appear at all "In every said Dr Van Voorhees this morning "there are certain now to be some infected persons who will be careless as to coughing and sneezing and to guard against the spreading of influenza by this method is the only safe course "There is a great deal of said Dr A Stone "People have become alarmed by reports of the influenza and it has caused them to be in a receptive mood The best way is to keep in good health by proper food and fresh air and to make up the mind that itt oing to have it I do not look for orious outbreak Sterns camp worker for the Christian Scientists at San Pedro expresses regret that so much has been said on the subject and apprehension excited by prophesy that influenza was bound to come "I blame the newspapers somewhat" he said "They have taught people to look for the symptoms In other words they have spread the trouble through the minds of the As to how far the Influenza has invaded the army and navy no word i is given out It has entered a number of homes however and in one instance every member of a family of seven is down with it Russia Will Trade With Pacific Coast SEATTLE Oct Following the announcement last night at Washington by the War Trade Board that applications will now he considered for the shipment of all Amer-ican-Siberian Trading Company of Seattle received positive advices that Prince Lvoy First Premier of the Russian republic Is coming to America In behalf of the new Siberian Government Lvoy is FOR LIBERTY The Southwestern Shipbuilding Company went over the top for the loan No peace palaver or prospect of influenza cut any figure among the men there The quota for the yard had been set at $350000 A great clock was installed that indicated by the movement of its hand the point the subscriptions had reached Since yesterday afternoon that hand has been pointing triumphantly to high noon When this quota was fixed the quota for the A yard was made a round million It was thought that this was a fair arrangement considering the relative size of the the campaign about 1500 have been forces but since the beginning of (added at the Southwestern and a similar number laid off at the other yard This fact increased the good natured rivalry by upsetting a balance regarded as equable Nevertheless the A yard is going ahead on the original basis and is approaching the goal rapidly Neither the ship-workers nor the management of the yard have any doubt that the goal will be reached Many of the A yard men have viewed $100 as the proper minimum and a goodly proportion have gone beyond this Some have voluntarily- doubled the subscriptions made earlier in the drive It is not uncommon to see an employee of the A yard wearing the buttons of every loan drive MANY SMALL CHAMBERS AS ONE BIG ONE Perhaps inspired by the alliance of harbor chambers of commerce commercial bodies
