Some 800,000 tourists a year gingerly descend into it via 57 flights of wooden steps (399 of them) to wander along several memorable miles of holes and corridors and caverns and hollows and nooks and pockets that have been gouged into the big lump of subterranean sodium cholride. THE SALT MINE of Wieli- I dampness over the centuries, the three altars and the religious sculptures give the entire chapel an almost surrealistic shape.
