Radical Modification or Total Repeal of the NA liCOIL 1 The People Intensely Interested Mayor 'Wessman has fearlessly performed a great public duty in the veto of the NVi leox telephone franchise ordinance He bad one of the grandest opportunities to do a great public service a mayor of this city ever had lie met the situation calmly and dispassionately and discharged his full duty lie manfully met the duty of the hour and the pople are ready to applaud hint with "well thile good and faithful servant" For a week the mayor has been the cynosure of the eyes and the intensified interest of the public Attention will now be shifted to the members of the city council The people look to these guardians of the public interests to take as decided a stand as has the mayor in the light of the fuller in- formation they have and guided by the legal opinion of City Attorney Daniels that the ordinance is not valid and that it does not properly safe-guard the eity's interests The full weight of public sentiment will be brought to bear on the aldermen to induce them to at in the interests of the city in preserving it most valuable franchise Perhaps no seven days of history of Chattanooga has been fraught with such intense interest in municipal affairs as has the past week On Tuesday tight of last 7week without warning to the pUblic and without foreknowledge of many of the members of the
