Commie With Freight St Louie Trip of the Herbert to be Made Prom Dartos No active movement has yet been raade as to the proposed absorption of the Board of Trade by the Chamber of Commerce And in all probability nothing definite be done tuatil the Interstate Commerce Commission has decided the issue raised as to a discrimination of rates agaitat Chattanooga In the meantime Secretary Goulding of the Chamber of Commerce is receiving the letters seat to the other organization and otherwise looking after its interests He hasn't a herculean ttudr however for the Board of Trade has practically retired its interests in favor of the Chamber of Commerce into which body it is thought it must eSentually become merged As to the protest against rate discrimination now being conducted by the Interstate Commerce Commission it has been suggested that the matter be not farther urged until after the CHATTANOOGA Stesmboat Company has practically demonstrated the feasibility of its project and has made a few successful tripe in other words until the shipment of grain and merchandise by the Tennessee River has been proved an economical advantage to shippers Then the complaints to the Commission have double force and there would be an independence in the contest for an equable adjustment so far as Chattanooga is concerned not now possible Already precedents for this apparently judicious move have been -established with success notablz so in the case of the city of Savannah Ga The people of that city began using the aavannah River for transporting their freight and the railroads finally made a reduction of one-third in rates If the present rainy season le continued a little longer the river will reach a sufficient height to warrant the Herbert starting out on her first trip to St Louie under the management of the CHATTANOOGA Steamboat Company In this connection it may be of interest to know that the first cargo will be made up mostly of a shipment which is ready to be loaded at Dayton Practically therefore the first trip will be from Dayton Tenn to St Louis Mo Another Humor Exploded A governor spring flew put at the Chattanooga mill yesterday morning necessitating the stopping of the plant for a short while Mr Divine took advantage of the accident and went over every part of the machinery tightening belts setting bolts etc Every piece wss tboronghly examined as the mill has been running almost constantly for the past ten months It will commence running again tomorrow morning For such a run everything was found in good shape and the mill can now take start for another lengthy grind Mr Divine said in answer to a Timm reporter's question that he did not intend building a new mill at King's Point as has been rumored Neither will he eell to another mitt syndidate as he has no offers It wee rumored on the streets yesterday that the East Tennessee officials had made Mr Divine an offer tor the Chattanooga mill property Mr Divine most emphatically denied the rumor and said be had received no such proponition either directly or indirectly and if he had been approached on the subject be would not entertain it as he had no idea of selling the property Adjusting tho Lassos The insurance adjusters were here in full force yesterday Besides the settlement with Et Via Co settlements were made follows: A Posey was paid $9 200 No settlement has as yet been made with the Chattanooga Medicine Company as many iznportant papers have not as yet been found that were in the safes of the company The adjusters also yesterday made a eatis factory settlement with Parrent Caldwell and Jarnagin Parrett Caldwell's loss was $330 on their stock of paints aud oils The damage to the building at 616 and 618 Market street owned by Mr Jarnagin was put at $20375 This insurance was carried by companies represented by Sevier The exact damage done to the stock of McCallie Co by water has not been exactly agreed upon However it will be between $475 and $500 In reporting the list of companies involved in the Ervin Co fire an error was made in crediting the agencies of the following companies to Sol Moyses viz: Scottish Union and National Glens Falls Northwestern National Mechanics' and Traders' of New Orleans These companies are represented by Wester Monning The $3 and $5 shoes at the Boston Shoe Company's are the talk abopt town The River Improvements Since the Tennessee River has risen the Government work on that stream has been almost suspended A few men are at work at the head of Tumbling Shoals removing rock from the channel A short distance below the river narrows to such an extent that when it rises the volume of water cannot be discharged as fast as it enters the channel consequently the river rises faster at the shoals than at the "Suck" just below This makes a very rapid stream with a heavy fall between these two points When the improvements contemplated are finished at that poiut the channel will be more un form and consequently more navigable Several large rocks just below the shoals are yet to be removed one of them Holston Rock being estimated to weisrh at least 1000 tons Good use has been He had been whittling and held the open knife in his band In brandishing his arms at the cattle he struck himself in the right leg severing the tualn artery He seemed to be doing well until last Friday when the wound burst afresh and he again lost a great deal of blood It was leered hie leg would have to be amputated and yesterday morning he was brought to the city Sharp's ambulance conveyed
