by the proprietors embracing every thing calculated to tempt the appetite prepared and served up in a style of neatness and taste highly gratifying attended by a corps of servants who for attention and propriety of conduct will compare with those of any establishment in the country and located in a fine airy room kept in the most cleanly and complete order you may well imagine that I can very calmly and composedly look on the crowd of heated and zealous politi During the month of Maylhe writer presented you with a few names appended to an article which after explaining ihe principles of negroes had from lime to time been brought here from other Slates and offered for sale in violation or the penal law Four were identified as having arrived iu one of the steam pickets from Charleston and from proof obtained by the testimony of several individuals it appeared that they had been offered for sale to various persons by Ellis He was thereupon arrested aud on failing lo give the required bail was committed to jail where be remained until approved bail iu the sum of one thousand dollars was furnished for his appearance at Court The four negroes two men and two women were like wise taken up but they claimed to be free saying they belonged to Baltimore had gone from there to Charleston wilh Oakes and from thence had been brought here They were committed to jail to give time to ascertain the facts in relation to their condition and tor this purpose I wrote to the Mayor of Baltimore and made such other inquiiiesas resulted in showing that they had all been convicted of felony and sentenced underthelaws of Ma to say '-and we do hereby agree to form ourselves into an association to be styled the Native American Associ ation to be governed by such rules and regulations hearty approval ot our society IHCRsDAT MAT 30 1844 The convention was called to order at half-past ievrn o'clock when Mr Butler of New York chairman of the committee to prepare an address to the people of the United State reported the following resolutions which were unanimously adopted and on motion leave vai granted to the committee to prepare the address nt their leisure RESOLUTIONS Resolved That the American Democracy place their trust not in factitious symbols not in displays and appealt insulting to the judgments ud subversive of the intellect of the people but in a clear reliance upon the intelligence the patriotism and the discriminating justice of the American masses Resolved Thal-e regard this as a distinctive feature of our political creed which we are proud to maintain before the world as the great moral element in a form of government springing from and upheld by the popular will and we contrast it with the creed and practice of Federalism under whatever name or form which seeks to palsy the will of the constituent ami which conceive no imposture too monstrous fur the popular credulity Resolved therefore That entertaining these views the Democratic party of this Union through their delegates assembled in a general convention of the Slates coming together in' a spirit of concord of devotion to the doctrines and faith of a free representative government and appealing to their fellow-citizens for the rectitude of their intentions renew and re-assert before the American people the declaration of principles avowed by them when on a former occasion in general convention they presented their candidates for the popular suffrages: 1 That the Federal Government is one of limited powers derived solely from the Constitution and and of 100 the United Stales should take such measures as are fit and proper to effect the immediate Annexation of the Republic of Texas to the Government of the United States Resolved That this measure is demanded not only by everyconsideration of expediency and sound policy but is absolutely indwpeosabie to the safety and preservation of the Institution of the South Resolved That we nitshly approve of the Treaty of Annexation lately concluded between the Governments of Texas and the Unite States and now before the Senate for ratification and oar Senators in Congress are hereby requested to use their best efforts to secure the success of that measure Resolved That in the event of the rejection by the Senate of the Treaty of Annexation we recommend to the friends of Annexation throughout the United States to hold a convention at some convenient place on a early a day as practicable for the purpose nf devising the most effectual means for the accomplishment of the Annexa for theirs Would departments and agents of the Government and that it is inexpedient and dangerous to exercise doubtful constitutional power 2 That the Constitution does not confer upon the General Government the power to commence and carry on a general system of internal improvements 3 That the Constitution does not confer authority upon the Federal Government directly or indirectly to assume the debts of the several States contracted for local internal improvements or other State purposes nor would such assumption be just and expedient 4- That justice and sound policy forbid the Federal Government to foster one branch of industry to the detriment of another or to cherish the interesis of one portion to the injury of another portion of our Co nun on country that every citizen and every section of the country has a right to demand and insist upon an equality of right and privileges and to nm-iplete any ample protection of persons ami properly from domestic violence or foreign aggression 5 That it is the duty of every branch of the Gcierninent to inforce and practice the most rigid economy in conducting our public affairs and that no more revenue ought to be raised than is required to (lefi of every in terms of the resolution To the Editors of the Vourier: Annexation" we have a history of the celebrated revolution under KcsriRl and Gen Tboxa by which Morse's Magnetic Telegraph The chamlier in the Railroad depot Pralt-treel in hich is placed the eastern station of the Electro-Magnetic Telegraph of Professor Morse continues to lie filled throughout the day with wondering spectators and the same scene is also presented nt the south-western station in the Capitol at Washington The Telegraph is completely successful in its operations and constitutes one of the most remarkable and astonishing triumphs which the science and ingenuity of man have ever achieved Communications are now made between the cities of Baltimore and Washington with the lapidity of lightning and with perfect clearness and accuracy The whole arrangement is one of great simplicity and when the spectator stands at the telegraphic table and flees llie upera'or transmit a message by a wire forty miles in length anil receive an answer back through the same medium all in the space of a few seconds lie cannot tint be struck ith wonder anil admiration Professor Morse has gained for himself an imperishable name and we doubt not that in due time he will lie called on hy the Government to prolong his magical lines to the extent of hundreds of miles The Washington Standard states that on Wednesday there was a large number of gentlemen assembled at the Capitol to hear the Telegrnphic despatches from Baltimore as they were successively received It was proposed that the thanks of those present be tendered to Professor Morse which was concurred in generally and the following resolution was offered by Mr George Wallis correspondent of the Ohio Statesman which was unanimously adopted anil three cheers given for the Piofessor and his invention to which he returned his sincere The following- letter from Mr Frelinghuysen to Mr I saw my name announced in yonr paper nf Friday last as one of committee accompanied by a preamble Kllsworth Chairman of the Committee announcin his Baton Rouge and Ihe western part of West Florida was acceptance of his nomination for the Vice Presidency and resolutions of the American Republican Association I htid attended but one of those meetings and with very rescued by the revolutionists from Spain and transferred hy them to the United Slates At more unblemished reputation and one who stands higbet with the people could not probably have been found in the Slate As an evidence of Ilia purity I would state that in accepting thennmina-tiou which he did in person in the Convention he made the distinct declaration that he would in no event take any measures personally to advance his election If the people should elect him he would serve them faithfully and tn the best of bis ability hut that he would not de scend to slump speaking or electioneering in any form tn obtain the object a noble stand worthy of being followed as an example by all candidates forofTice The Tyler Convention as a matter of course unanimously nominated that gentleman and assigned the duty of selecting a Vice President to a committee to report at leisure I was present on the day of its adjournment and had a scat among the delegates and tried to look like A delegate loo until by resolution a hat was passed round to take up a collection for the payment of the expenses of the convention when I thought it best lo sound a retreat for fear nf being committed against true democracy by aiding and giving comfort to the enemy The speakers at this convention were
