MONDAY, OCT. 15, 1877. We will make, the largest exhibition this fall of COMMISSIONERS. Editor Free Press Why was it that our Republican county convention re-nominated the same officers who had held positions during the past two years, except commissioner Banning? If any officer has served the county faithfully, he certainly has, and I believe none is held in higher estimation. I learn that his many friends are justly indignant at the action of the convention, and that he has consented to run for the office again.

Mr. Cook is a good man, doubtless, but the people know Mr. Banning to be one, and as he understands so well the duties of his office the people will giye him a strong vote for re-election especially so in view of the re-nomination of all the other officers. It, perhaps, ill becomes one in the third district to suggest anything about a second district candidate, but at the election we all vote for all the commissioners and it is eminently proper that it should be so, because the commissioners do duty for the whole county at large. Let every voter put Mr.

Banning's name on his ticket for commissioner from the 2nd District, thus endorsing a worthy officer. M. des C. Providence being willing, there will be a big horse fair at Topeka. Exchange.

It appears that some of the directors were in doubt about the accuracy of the decision of the judges in awarding first money to "Sleeping Billy," and they wrote the Tield on the subject. The following is the letter and answer "Burlingame, Kas. In a trotting race, mile heats, 3 in 5, purse 175; 100 to first, 50 to second, $25 to third. First horse to beat 2:45 to get first money. The following entered and started in this race with the result: Sleepy 1 i i Black 3 3 5 Belden 5 4 3 Richard Adwl 4 2 2 Doc IIoorer 2 5 4 Time 3:02, 3:02, 2:51.

"1st. Is any horse entitled to first money? 2d. What horse to the second money? 3d. What horse to third money? 4 th. Was the race concluded? Answer 1, No.

2, Richard Ames. 3, Black .4, Yes" It appears, therefore, that the judges erred in giving Sleepy Billy first money, because he did not come in within the stipulated time of 2:45, and was not entitled to second money because be was not second horse.
