The Georgia legislature considered a bill which would bar it in the state. All over the country there were protestations that the sport was too brutal, that It must be stopped. It was Von Gammons mother who saved the game. There is no doubt anywhere that if Mrs. Rosalind Burns Gammon, of Rome, had not interfered, the game would have died.

To the representative sponsoring the bill in the Georgia legislature she sent these words: It would be a great favor to the family of Von Gammon if your influence could prevent his desdi from being used as an argument detrimental to the athletic cause and its advancement at the university. A confident crew of Moccasins, calling on a dazzling qpen game with precision, beat back the tall-spinning titlists of the Dixie conference, Birmingham-Southern, 26 to 14, to open their loop campaign here last night before almost shivering fans. Forgetting their injuries, swivelhipped Waddles Watland and- Capt. Fred mg. along with the irrepressin ble big Bob Klein, led the U. C.

clan to their second victory in a row, handing the golden-helmeted Panthers their fifth trimming in as many starts. It was an attractive see-saw battle, with the Moccasins at something of a handicap around the midway mark. Late in the second period the Panthers had a 14-to-7 margin and a frantic overhead attack clicked for a touchdown. Big Bob Klein made about as wonderful a catch as you will see just over the goal line. He leaped high in the air above two would-be knoekers-down, grasped the ball, a Panther punched it out and then the gigantic end eaughtj it as he came down.

It was a fine pass from Trew, i the extra point, who faded back deep. It cost a time- Southern, out penalty to get Trew in the game for the play. Jim Grainger, as It turned out, did the unusual trick of missing his placement, so the Moccaslnswent to the dressing room at the half behind, 14 to 13, But they had what it took and came right back to score, Watlands bounding sprint of twenty-seven yards, the games feature play, sharing honors with Kleins catch, put U. C. in the lead and from there on out Chattanooga was never headed.

Coach Scrappy Moore sent in his whole squad late in the game, while the cheering patrons shook and shook on account of the cold, damp, foggy air, which penetrated every one, but the pressmen, boxed in with glass, a la big time. Much yelling apiced the game about the dark ball, fans yelling for a white ball. A white ball cannot be used, it was explained, unless agreeable to both coaches and the Panther mentor did not want it. Ring punted for a 36-yard! average, which is nifty enough, but at that he barely shaded the Southern booters, with Bryce McKay doing most of the toe work. McKay was the ground-gaming leader for the night, and flashed an all-star performance.

Chick Hinds returned to his form of last year with a bang, picking up lots of yardage. The Panthers got off to a rousing tart In the first period, racking up a 7-to-0 lead. A concerted drive from the 20-yard line after a punt exchange, McKay and Bill Johnson alternated at ripping off long gains to the 27, where Bill Johnson dropped back and tossed a pass to McKay for sixteen yards. A second later Bill Johnson heaved a pass to Joe Johnson to the 8 and four plays later McKay went over from the 1-yard line. Bounding right back, U.

C. started a drive late in the second. It was a running attack, except for one short pass, beginning from the- 20, on a touchback. Ring and Hinds, and later Watland, despite injuries, featured the crushing attack. Watland took it over at right guard from the 1-yard line.

Grainger toed the placement to even It at 7-all. The Panthers immediately took the kick-off and marched straight up the field to score again. A brilliant 31-yard sprint by McKay furnished the spark to the drive. No passes were used, the sparkling McKay again counting from the 1-yard line and McLendon again converting. V.

C. Bounds Back. Not to be outdone, the Moccasins came right back to score with their kick-off. it was done with a dazzling display of forwards and forward laterals, desperately necessary with but minutes to play. The drive was culminated by a pass with less than a minute to go, Trew, Just in the game, to Klein, who made his sensational leaping catch.

Graingers placement was wide by a bare foot. Watland, bad ankle and all burst through the middle of the line on a 27-yard spinner to put Chattanooga ahead In the third-quarter. It was a brilliant piece of churning legs. Waddles dodging two tacklers, warding off another and all but carrying the safety man with him a few yards before shaking him off and rushing over the line. The drive started with an intercepted pass bv Martell, who raced to ten yards to the U.

C.s 37. Trew and Ring ripped off 18 and 17-yard runs, respectively, before Watland broke loose. Grainger booted this one for the 20-to-l4 edge. The quarter ended that way. But a fumble recovered by Trew on the Panthers 40 on.
