brother Wm Thompson at Greenville MART wife of Thomas A II obion of Charle-ton The long and paleful illness preceded the event afforded only the crowning evidence of that strength and pnriy of character of which her entire life was an emblem Those qualities that shone through her retired manner with a mild but ceaseless lustre in the days of health flashed out in streng effulgence as health and life declined To sav that she was grateful for every kiDdnees patient through the severest suffering calm and confident in vitfve of the life to come is only to say that she died as she lived an dher death like her life attested the happy Jnfluence of her peculiar religious faith Though bound to this life by the strongest ties of affection sh resigned it without a murmur drawn upwards perhaps by those invisible chords which had already linked her to a hJgher worldJt was fitting that her last great change should come in the unbroken silence of a Sabbath a time typical alike of the peace Gen Albert resignation was not accepted by President Davis and that the President was fully satisfied of the correctness of the position assumed by the General We trust that the valuable services of the latter and his influence with the Indian tribes are still employed by the Confederate Gov eminent SATURDAY HOaSIKG OCTOBER 4 1862 Unreasonable Expectations Tbe events that have transpired in the last six weeks have severely disappointed tbe sanguine pnd credulous Filled with delight by the splendid achievements of our armies in Virginia and tbe West they had marked odt a path of glory for our Generals which at every step grew wider and more bright They believed that Cincinnati was already in our hands that Louisville would soon be purs' and that General Lee was left to decide whether he would take Washington Baltimore or Philadelphia They rejoiced with unspeakable joy in the assurance that Buell had been out-ge derailed by Bragg and considering army demoralized weakened and disheartened they could see no difficulty of formidable proportions rising between their desires and The days have shown that some of these beautiful and insoiriiing hopes were delusions and it is by no meins certain that those still cherished will be realized Thereare grounds for the fear that Buell has out marched Bragg and with his veteran corps stands prepared to defend Louisville And it is known that the army under Gen Lex is on the South side of the Potomac We reckoned without our host when we imagined that the Grand Army would be able to make but feeble resistance to the onward march of our troops whose brows were adorned with the wreath of victory whose faces still shone with thejight of battle In our calculations and expectations we grievously underrated the power and enterprise of our lively enemy While we were dreaming these pleasant dreams he was working industriously day and night repairing the wide breaches made in his ranks at Bull Run and Manassas adding largely to tte number we put to flight on those bloody fields and in place of hearing the jubilant tidings that either of the cities on which our eyes were fixed was in our possession we are informed that the fiercest tight ofall has taken place and are called upon to be grateful we were able to hold our own against the furious onsets of the largest and best appointed army our troops have yet met on the red field of war And indeed the result of that terrible conflict is matter for devout and hearty thanksgiving and the Generals officers and men who took part in that mighty struggle deserve our warmest praise and lively thanks Seventy thousand men weary and weak with labors and marches and fasting for fifteen hours struggled with two hundred thou sand and after repulsing the heavy columns h'urled upon them remained masters of the battle ground Was not Southern prowess as splendidly illustrated -at Sharpsburg as it was before Richmond or on the plains of Maaassas? Did not our noble soldiers display as much gallantry and resolution on that field of blood as they ever displayed in any previous battle? Aye did irsn ever fight with more spirit and obstinacyjLhan they did who covered (hat field with thousands of slain and wounded And yet forsooth because the seventy thousand did not rout and scatter the two hundred thousand there are not a few who are cast down and who in their foolish despondency give ear and tongue to murmurs apd gloomy forebodings We should at every opportunity and rebuke those unmanlypungenerous and unreasonable feelings Whafrmofe could our army do than it has done? And shall we because our extravagant expecta-lions have been disappointed yield to doubt and fear be sad when we should be happy de spondeat when we should exult find fault when we should grumble when our hearts should be filled to overflowing with gratitude? Though at the first the boastful foe ps is his wont claimed that tbe battle of Sharpsburg resulted in a decisive victory to the Federal army and the whole North rang with shouts at the great success the journalists of Lincolndcrm have since corrected that most pleasing error and the most unprincipled of them admit that that conflict gives no cause for boastiogr Receiving the report concerning the battles that emanated from offlcilU sources as true believing that their side had won a brilliant victory they naturally expected to hear still more joy ous tidings But wheu obliged to bel eve that our army had returned to Virginia and their hearts were made to bleed over the long list of the dead and dying and wohnded they acknowledge with deep mortification anJ sorrow that that battle was as indecisive as itrwhs bloody What reason have we to fear? There is no cloud on our hopes All signs are encouraging Eventual success is certain Lincoln has at last shaken the rod of terror he refrained from raising till the cause he is engaged in should be compassed about with such perils that it became desperate The South laughs at the brutum fulrnen-The South' rejoices in the publication of his eman- cipation proclamation It cafinot do us any harm it will do ns great good It breeds divisions in his own borders it will compose differences ancf produce a greater unanimity throughout these Confederate States Our army has been largely reinforced andto-day is stronger in numbers with courage as firm and spirits as high as whfen it drove the beleaguering host from the Cjiicahomioy and put to fight Jhis legions qu the field of Manassas The call will shortly be made for an additional levy that will give us au army little inferior in point of numbers to that of the foe The most important victories that have signalized our courage have been won in the face of large odds With such Generals and such soldiers and such a cause we have nothing to fear Gen Beauregarp and Staff will remain as (tests at the Mills House The private mansion of Otis Mills Esq which has bee generously tendered for the purpose will be fitted up as the official Headquarters 4 A correspondent of (he Griffin (Ga) States referring to the want ot shoes remarks: there is a foreigner among us of good character who iscompetent to manufacture sabots he can obtain tbe necessary capital for conducting a concern on a large or small scale by referring to the Wooden shoes have been made and can be made Here as has been shown by specimenthathave been exhibited at the Courier office Had those officially concerned in procuring army supplies been in any degree competent there would not have been any want of shoes In "going to war however with officers fit' only for a peace estab-jnent we have paid th proper penalty 4 4 i 4 A 5 I 1 published to general information and
