Pawtucket' certainly went up against a hard game at the Ven-dome last night but at that made good The handicap was further Increased by the illness of the leading lady Mlss Mane Pettcs who arrived In Nashville yesterday suffering from a violent cold which threatens to develop Into pneumonia Her con-dltloa was such upon arrival that the physician who was called in recommended the best of treatment and upon his advice Miss Pettes was removed to St Thomas Hospital The illness of Miss Pettes necessarily resulted la a hasty reconstruction of the cast and the management was in sore dis tress to fill the vacancies essential to a proper presentatloa of the play Miss Marguerite Hayden Miss Pettes' understudy naturally glided into the latter's shoes so to speak and Mrs Nowell who made her Initial bow before the footlights was drafted to fill the vacancy left by Miss Hayden Notwithstanding these drawbacks "The Earl of Pawtucket" was presented In TT most creditable manner and few the audience were aware of the difficulties being experienced behind the scenes "The Earl of Pawtucket" is one of those productions which easily appeals to the public It is bright in dialogue has sufficient action to keep one constantly on the alert and a pretty little romance in which an English Lord and an American girl are the central figures furnishes complications enough to please the most fastidious of play-goers The comedy is on a high plane and shows the delicate handling of that popular author Augustus Thomas Frank Monroe as Lord Cardington is easily the star of the production and his impersonation pf the English Lord in pursuit of the pretty American girl Is one of the most finished portrayals of a character of the kind seen In Nashville for years He refuses to fall Into the error committed by so many actors that ot overplaying the part and thereby render the role ridiculous but lends a dignity to the character which is sure to appeal to the sympathies ot the audience which at the time presents the comicalities unimpaired Mr Munroe demonstrates the fact that be is cot only a polished actor but that be has the English dialect down'' to taste Miss Hayden certainly made a most be witching Harriet Fordyce and to one not cognizant of the change in the cast the fact that she was an understudy would never have been suspected She has youth beauty and talent and all that is needed to bring her to the fore is opportunity The balance of the characters are in capable hands the company being well balanced throughout "The Earl of Pawtucket" Is admirably staged the company carrying its own scenery The three acts of the play are supposed to take place in the Waldorf Astoria in New York City and the different apartments of this famous hostlery are reproduced in all their elaborateness Earl of will be seen at the matinee to-day and closes with performance CASE Investigating Committee Holds Its First Meeting By Associated Press Washington February 6 The committee
