CCNIIUTED GOVEILNOR I Gov Patterson to-day commuted the sentence of Davis of Clay County who has served seven years and three months of a ten-year sentence to nine years This ease is a rattier unusual one in that Davis' daughter upon whom he la alleged to have committed incest makes aMdavit that at the trial she did not understand the questions as to the crime propounded by the prosecuting attorney and she further states in her aftdavit that Davis had no undue relations with her The pardon further recites that the plea of innocence is borne out by tne fact that -Davis was not prcrsecuted for eight years after the alleged commission of the crime The application for executive clemency was signed by the trial Judge attorney-general Jury prosecutor and a number of citizens of the county Davis Exhibition at Tort nto COURT RESOZUTION That there are great possibilities for the Tennessee State Fair is the firm belief of the officers and management and steps to realize those possibilities are now being considered With subscriptions that have been made by a company of patriotic eitizenS of Davidson County and the efforts of three years the institution has been placed on a basis where it does not show a bad light with the best State Fairs in the United States that have been running for years What is now needed is reasonable resources for the enlargement of the State Fair and there is every reason why it should grow 111d flourish like a green bay tree "What we would like to do is to make the Tennessee State Fair to the South what the Canadian National Exhibition at Toronto is to Canada" said Robert Purch President of the Tennessee State Fair "That is probably the greatest and best attended annual exhibition in the world There is every reason why the Tennessee State Fair should be an important annual exhibition for the entire South Nashville is so located that it- is within not many hours ride of some half-dozen states and is the most central city of the South "The climatic conditions are such that the great live stock men of the North and West will not bring their herds any further South than Nashville but they will ome here from all parts of the country The development and fostering of agriculture is the main purpose of the State Fair and without the great exhibits of live stock it would not be complete If our State Fair is permitted to assumfi the importance that is reasonably possible with the proper steps to enlarge it it should become an exhibition that could be of 'value to the entire South and should bring a large attendance from the I arious Southern States When we look 1 at the results of the first three years it i Is not difficult to see that this view is not too roseate but is a conservative claim son County and -Whereas it is greatly to the interests of the people of Davidson County and the people of the State of Tennessee that such a State fair be located permanently near Nashville and that Davidson County should purchase suitable property and convey or lease the same to the state for the purpose of holding of an annual State Fair "Now therefore be it resolved by he County Court of Davidson County That the General Assembly of the State of Tennessee be and the same is hereby respect ully requested: To enact legislation which would grant to Davidson County the power to purchase sultabe property in Davidson County $150000 or so much thereof as may be necessary to purchase suitable property in Davidson County for the aforesaid purpose" OFFICER KELLY HAS NARROW ESCAPE PATROLMAN FIRED UPON WITH A SHOTGUN BY UNIENOWN PERSON But for the bad aim of some Unknown person last-night Officer Kelly might have lost his life He was returning to roll call and just as he neared the corner of Third Street and Grace Avenne someone bred at him with a shotgun some of the shots striking his trousers and tearing a large bole in them The shooting occurred in the neighborhood of where a gang of bad boys have been operating and it Is thought by the officers that one of the gang is responsible for the shooting It was dark when the shots were fired and Officer Kelly could not tell the direction from which the shots came Judge Baker stated this morning that the conduct of the boys in Northeat Nashville was outrageous and that a thorough investigation would be made and all parties brought to justice The Judge further gave officers watching lu East Nashville orders to arrest boys who gathered around the corners even' It there were not but two or three Marriage Licenses Griffin and Cheatham Ridley made its appearance upon the stroke of 12 last -night to the accompanimedt of a bedlam of noises that would have justified the populace in believing that Nashville waa experiencing a disaster similar to that of recent occurrences In the once proud Sicilian City of Me6811111 All available whistles were brought into requisition and firearms and firecrackers added to the chaotic noises Most of the citizens seemed to be very wide awake and only a fortunate few slept through the midnight hour The streets were fairly alive with people and everyone was wishing everyone else "Happy New Year" Many a man fondly believed himself to be enjoying his last little jag and the air was tnick with resolutions which will probably make a noise sittilac to that of the midnight hour when they begin breaking as they invariably do Nineteen hundred and eight la now 'oratory and 1909 Is possibility or opportunity Everyone 'seems to feel that a change has come over the spirit of the worlds dream and the future Is alive with hopes and not altogether free from fears One of the more general questions is "How will you stand when 1909 passt's into the Land of Yesterday?"
