service highly approved Health Officer Cook read his report which was filed An important point is raised by hIm touching the unitary condition of tenement houses Close inspection of tbese and frequent reporta thereon can but result in good The report is as follows: To Davidson County Board of Health: sanitary inspectors of thisBoard continue to make house-tohouse visits of inspection the number of which since our last meeting June 16 was 2995 in contiguous civil districts to the city There ware 702 nuisances observed 632 abated and 70 etand as yet unabated We continue to have inspected all dairies the water supply slaughtering estaMishments and buctstering Results show advantages gained to the general health It is gratifying to be able to say that road commissioners in adjacent districts have in many instances co-operated with your health officer in abating nuisances existing in the public highways for which they were responsible Streets have been filled here and there and mud holes dried up culverts built People too have drained stagnant pools graded streets abated ponds buried carcasses and removed numerous foul objects of complaint under instruction ot the law One citizen who had repeatedly obeyed the law on the 21111 ject of cleaning away a filthy hogpen nuisance "grew weary in well doing and swore be would clean no more He now stands indicted by the grand specimens of water as I would furnish him from springs wells and cisterns within my territory to which he replies that arrangements have been made with Prof William Day professor of chemistry In the State Normal College late assist ant professor to the chair of chemistry in the Johns Hopkin University Baltimore who will undertake the work At an early date be will be in possession of the analysis At the conclusion of the proddent's letter be has the following to say: "At the intelligent activity displayed by the Davidson County Board of Health in the prosecution of its all-important and
