Memphis In Nashville Charleston In New (Means Savannah in Mobile This afternoon begins a series of four games between the loeals and the Memphis club Very great Interest is centered In the meeting and a large audience will see every game In the race for the pennant New Orleans Memphis and Nashville have taken the lead hi the order named Should Nashville however Win this series it will give the Bluff City boys a very significant set-back and establish Nashville a favorite for pennant honors However It Is too early in the season to make anything more than possible predictions The Charleston team with two good pitchers and a heavy hitting third baseman would become at Once most formidable A few changes the Savanah team might advance that organization In a couple of weeks to front rank A great advantage that has thus far been enjoyed by Nashville and Memphis Is that they have been playing on their own diamonds They have had the audiences and possibly in too many instances the umpires with them When they leave home they will be forced to combat these very things which will then be on the side of the opposing clubs The Memphis team is however a strong set of ball players who always go In to win Their methods have in exhibition gamesnot as to recommend them to the favor of the public Inestel will umpire the series and it Is safe to predict that there will be no disorderly conduct Transportation Company First Mr Pullman as a stockholder In the 1 Transportation Company asked to have the company's directors enjoined from carrying out the resolutions adopted in September 1885 under which the par value of the Central Company's stock was reduced from $50 to $38 per share and the surplus wm directed to be distributed as a 12 per cent dividend among the stockholders The contention was that this surplus which amounts to $600000 could not legally be divided because the Board which authorized the dividend had no authority to do so After hearing argument the court held the matter under advisement and argument upon another branch of the litigation was then begun In this the Pullman Palace Car Company asked to have the Central Transportation Company enjoined from prosecuting its suits to collect rental at the terms specified In the original lease The transportation company has a number of snits pending to collect rental at that rate and from time to time as each quarterly rental falls due new suits on the same basis are piling up The Pullman Company wishes to stop the bringing of these suits and asks the court to find that the rental should be graded in accordance with the earnings Another matter in contention is providing the Pullman Company elects to surrender the leased property on what basis the surrender should be made The 'natters contained in the complainant's bill cover a great deal of ground and It took the assistant counsel for the Pullman Company over an hour to alone read It Total 49 15 20 1 27 12 5 cusnmreati AB Bit Blk PO A Glenn 6 general effect of the disclosures made as regards the President's views on a setond term has been to strengthen Mr Cleveland very materially in public opinion It had been freely stated that appointments for some time past were distributed with reference to a renomination and for party effect rather than for the public good Though nobody believed this at first Yet the continued and systematic reiteration had begun to Influence men's minds and it was just as well the truth became known when it did The statement originally attributed to Senator Vest bag been so materially qualified by him as to destroy its character as an utterance of the Preeldent's and to leave nothing of It but a personal opinion of the Senator As for the isUeged letter of renunciation which appeared several weeks ago as a Chicago roorback and which the Washington correspondent of the St Louis Republican heard of only last Saturday that was never at any time received seriously But Bev Dorsheimer's dignified and explicit statement made in the Star to-day and reproduced by the Associated Press everywhere has had a profound effect It satisfies everybody that the President so far from scheming for a renomination as his detractors declare has really contemplated a formal and irrevocable renunciation It shows that disgusted with the misrepresentation of his purposes and the perversion of his he had endeavored to declare himself in such fashion as would protect him from further annoyance and leave him free to serve out his term and retire upon the honors be has so well earned there Is a much better feeling today in consequence and the backbiters will have to mark out a new line of attack while though- lid and patriotic citizens all over the country consider the
