Philadelphia 6 FINE GAME AT BROOKLYN NEW YORK April Boatons and Brooklyns played another splendidly contested game to-day They played so well that the 3000 people who saw the game were kept in a state of enthusiasm from start to finish Both sides did unusually fine field work The visitors outdid themselves by a big majority in that phase and Stetumeyer out-pitched anything he had ever done Score: Brooklyn 1 Boston 2 NOTES Billy Taylor will be here to-morrow and will probably pitch the first game for the Mannion has done some fine infield playing He should be trained for second base as a regular position To-morrow afternoon the League season opens The Charlestons open the season in this city with the locals Maul and Nicholas will probably be the battery for to-morrow afternoon in the Nashville-Charleston game There has never been seen in this city better battery work than that of Corcoran and Hayes and Smith and Crotty Cherry street was sprinkled yesterday before the game and the trip was much more pleasant than through the usual dust President Morrow has assigned the umpires: Atkinson to New Orleans Suck to Memphis and Burbridge to Nashville The Charleston Southern League Base Ball Club arrived in the city last night and the members are registered at Linck's Hotel Bradley continued his excellent third base playing yesterday He has not made a fielding error for the past half dozen games and has had much work to do When Maul gets over his wildness he will be one of the most reliable pitchers ever In the Southern League He has already shown up well as a slugger and base runner He is a most valuable man The trouble with the umpire was that he became rattled and confused He was evidently trying to do right but made several bad breaks in trying to correct one erroneous decision by giving another erroneous decision During the game Nicholas was on second and nobody was out There was no player put up to coach him and he failed to secure any better position in the circuit around the bases After two men were out and a long fly was knocked to center field he halted between second and third to see whether the ball would be held instead of making a dive for home as he should have done LATITUDE kND unoirruDE OF NASHVILLE Latitude 36deg lOntin 'Longitude 49min The tecilltiCs of the AGENCYCOLLECTION DEPARTMEN )Ger superior advantages for the collectiona twit-due calins and Is open to the use of Mel alts generally whethcr subscribers or not The last game of the State championship series between Nashville and Memphis was played yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large audieuce The score below shows that the Bluff City team won the game and with it the pennant of Tennessee The game was hotly contested throughout and was full of excitement to players and spectators The features were the very fine pitching of both Smith and Corcoran the excellent fielding of both teams the disgusting conduct of Sneed and the poor mph ing of Atkinson The actual bits made were two by the Nashvilles and four by Memphis each pitcher allowing two own bases on balls The two pitchers were absolute masters of the game The fielding as stated was excellent and the victory went to the club that did the most ferocious kicking and which ran bases the better Memphis secured her first two runs on the brutal conduct of Sneed and the timidity of Umpire Atkinson who did not declare him out The ball NC EtS hit by a batter while Sneed wm on second The latter started to third while the ball was picked up by Nashville's shortstop and thrown to Bradley on third The latter caught the ball while Sneed was several feet away but the latter made a great rush and threw himself over Bradley knocking the ball out of his hand after it had been held securely and Sneed had been duly touched There was much expressed indignation not only against Sneed but against Atkinson Had not Bradley been very considerate of the public and of the future of the game there would undoubtedly have been a personal difficulty between the two managers The score then ran 2 to 0 in favor of the visitors until the eighth inning when Sneed after two men were out got his base on balls and Andrews knocked the ball over right field fence for a home run This virtually decided the game but an erroneous decision was giveu in the ninth inning which prevented the locals from scoring at least one run Reeder had got to second base when Corcoran hit a hard ball which was fielded slowly to first The umpire ran down to initial bag to watch the play while Reeder "unbeknownst" to and unseen by the umpire made a short cut and scored A visiting player called the umpire's attention to the matter and the latter contrary to custom decided Reeder was out Taken all in all the game wm not what a well-behaved public would like to except as a daily occurrence The conduct of Sneed and his subordinates Black and Doyle was reprehensible to a high degree and when the League season opens and they are subject to league discipline should be made to materially change their tactics and methods Considering the contest itself and comparing the two teams it is clear that the visitors have several very decided advantages over the locals They play the game with a zest and hurrah that makes it look like base ball They coach and run bases for all these features are worth They go in to win and while several of their players goat times to a disagreeable extreme they yet show very plainly that they are alive and not big wooden chumps Tbe Nashvilles have really a etronger team but Manager Bradley should make them put more life Into their playing especially when they are at bat This criticism and these suggestions are well intended and if there be anything in them should be taken prompt advantage of by the time the League championship season opens The following is the score: AB BH PO A Clinton I 300100 Hayes 4 0 1 5 1 1 Maul 400001 'Reeder 4 0 1 2 1 0 Corcoran 4 0 1 1 4 0 MaT101011 arbitration also that the employes of each yard should be under the supervision of a committee of three composed of yard employes This the manufacturers refused to sign and I at the meeting last night
