morning about 11 o'clock about two miles from Adams' Station and Nat this side of Red River on the Henderson Di vision of the road The engine of Cie second section of thmugh freight 63 went over the treetle followed by thirteen or fourteen cars resulting in a complete etnash-up The train was in two sections and the causeof the accident was the breaking loose of part of the first which had must passed over the trestle The detached cars rolled rapidly back down the grade striking with fearful force the engine of the second motion and knocking it off the track The derailed engine keeled over partially to one side and shot down from the trestle to the ground a distance of thirty-five or forty feet dragging seven or eight of its own care with it and the caboose and several cars of the other section The fireman John McGowan stuck to his engine and was badly crushed in the fall No one else went over Tom Willis the engineer who lives in this city escaped by jumping but received a few bruises Report had it that McGowan was dead but at last accounts he was still alive though in a bad condition Hie home is in Earlington Ky The telegraph poles attached to the trestle were broken down and until some of them could be temporarily erected communication was almost entirely cut off General Manager Harm-ban passed through last night on a special engine to the scene of the disaster Work has been commenced with the wrecking train in removing the debris and in repairing the trestle This will take about two days and in the meantime all of the Henderson Division trains will go around by Bowling Green The Hopkineville accommodation went out last night to the wreck to receive passengers which bad come op as far as the fatal trestle on the regular passenger train due here about 8 o'clock The accommodation returned early this morning The amount of damage in dollars has not been estimated by railroad men yet but it will reach a very high figure What the wrecked cars were loaded with has not been learned Had the second section when it was struck been on the river bridge Just a few yards beyond the trestle the result would have been far worse The bridge is nearly ninety feet DAVIS me2iI RI VALENTINO Committee It hag turned out that Nashville has contributed her share of victims to the big Florida land swindle An account of the arrest of the parties at the head of this scheme has already been given in the telegraphic dispatches of the last ten days A large number of prominent gentlemen here received the circulars in which the offers to sell property at a nominal price were made A West Nashville physician noted for his modesty and also his good sense was one of the number He at once sent enough money to the place named to buy one lot An answer came back that he must send double the amount as all the first lots had been sold Down into his pocket he went and sent the required amount He will now take hal a ceqt on the dollar for his investment His friends hearing of his speculation are inclined to show an undue interest in ikon- lug the details which seem to them very funny onsequently the Doctor has gotten into the habit lately of walking several blocks out of his way to avoid coming in contact with them Another one of the same profession in East Nashville bit very hard at the bogus bait He went into it heavy and with the ambition of striking it rich On receipt of the circulathe at once wrote to Cincinnati he head officer of the St Andrews Bay Railroad Land Company asking an option on sixteen lots Of course he got it While waiting for an answer he went to fifteen friends and talked them into going in with him picturing the scheme in the most glowing colors When the response came giving him special rates on the lots be quietly "shook" his partners and took the whole number himself Maybe his wouldhave-been "partners" are not having fun now It was stated yesterday that he hardly speaks to them now as they pass by There are a large nuMber of others here who will long remember Guy Webber and his little scheme To Railroad COltractors The result of yesterday's game looks better for the local team Takeo all in all the series appears to be rather remarkable The first game was won by the Memphians in a sluggish contest by the score of 5 to 3 The next day Nashville won in a walk with 8 scores to Memphis 1 The following day however Memphis rallied defeated Nashville by a score of 13 to 1 and the succeeding day by the still larger score of 20 to 5 Yesterday afternoon the seemingly demoralized team from Nashville lit into their opponents and made twelve runs while the latter made only three These one-sided scores go to show that the season is too young to allow an Intelligent comparison to be made between the two teams These scores may also be construed to show how any pitcher is i alTra suffer under the new rules if he is the least bit out of condition The sixth game of the State's championship series will be played In Nashville and if won by the locals as it should be will require a seventh game to decide the issue The Cincinnati Enquirer of yesterday contains the following paragraph: "Manager Bradley of the Nmhvilles has canceled his Cincinnati dates President Stern has notified him that if he does not keep his contract he will sue the Nashville team for 500 damages" The dates referred to are April 7 and The deferred Nashville-Memphis game will be played April 14 the Memphians stopping over here on their way home from Cincinnati where they play on the 13th inst The locals will probably play the Cincinnatis on the 7th or 8th of this month as the latter club refused to allow Manager Bradley to cancel his dates entirely The Dr llendershott Medicine Company' Manufacturing Chemists of Drs as an actor is eseentially posseesed of the power to amuse His humor is dry and unrestrained and when he takes such a character as Samuel liunily in "The Woman Hater" presented at the Masonic last niglit for the first time In this city he spreads a degree of merri'tent about him which few other actors equal and after a fashion all his own It is Invariably at his own expense Voluntarily and with delicious unction he has assumed one role after another during the past ten years which have been unfailingly akin to his original creation of Oft Sellers in this respect Through all the creations attached to his name nine or ten he has not failed to Infuee t1i 8eliC4 Ot ridicule good natured Innocent and funny that is the mainspring of his own nature He has brought to the public a greater number of plays written for himself and achieved a higher average of gnomes in them than any other American actor He has been a bard and conscientious worker Yet his plays have thus far not been noted for more than this serio-farcical element around which they seem all to have been Wilt But he hat been so consistent in his methods and these methods have been demonstrated to be based on such genuine if limited and something monotonous nality of conception and exposition that Raymond will occupy a distinct niche in the hereafter as an actor of superiority of intelligence and sincerity of purpose and execution and be is a better actor to-day than at any time in his career More than this he is giving evidence of a progressive spirit tat partakes of some bravery and in his latest effort he has exposed an ambition to go one step further and draw to the surface the ripened side of a long experience with men and things and add a touch of true comedy to the heretofore unlicensed vein of unadulterated farce comedy that has built his fame to its present heighth of histrionic excellence He produced "A Gold Mine" on trial last week in Mepaphis a play written for him by that admirable copartnership of playwrights Branders and Jessop the latter of whom is the author of the Raymond sketch in their "Actors and Actresses" of recent publics In this play Mr Raymond is In the main a serious man He goes an American to England to sell a gold mine In London be is thrown with a banker and his family one of which a son meets financial disaster just as the American has become enamored of the boy's aunt The latter disposes of his mine at half its value to the father and the proceeds to save the son The mine is subsequently rebought by the aunt who marries the American The play is serio-comic interspersed with some broad Comedy scenes but the character of Silas Wooleot is not unlike that of Asa Trenchard in "The American Cousin" The audience last night was fine in point of attendance and quality and a wave of unrestrained laughter marked the process of the performance The success was so pronounced that a matinee will be given Wednesday at which "The Woman Hater" will be repeated "For Congress" tonight Mr Raymond made a significant remark last night as he came off the second act of "The Woman Hater" to the echo of applans "I have been traveling through Southern towns since previous to the war" said be "and I have watched the great change going on in these cities There is no point of observation in such matters equal to that of an actor in front of an audience in the same town from year to year and I have noticed an improvement in ovary way The audiences average a greater number the people are infinitely more appreciative and discriminating better dressed and better behaved The whole face of Southern towns has undergone a very decided change I played to an audience in Richmond last week where the ladles were without bonnets and in handsome attire The private box occupants were in full dress and the very pit was full of men in dress coats It was a beautiful audience And the same thing is noticeable in some degree in every Southern city I visit The unfolding of every kind that is In progress ifi Southern cities is one of the most inter I see In all this country" Those who are attracted by the more sensational features of Western lifatt csmbina
