history of the shooting of young Arthur Carnehan at a dance which was given Monday night Jan 26 at the home of his brother-in-law Robert Hughes is now Ito longer a matter of conjecture nor speculation the mystery surrounding the shootiog having been entirely cleared away by the testimony of the chilerent witnesses in the committal trial of Robert and Dave Hughes hicli took place yesteroay before Squires Drumgoole and Ridley It was developed during the trial that Carnelian accidentally snot himself not only in a very remarkable and unusual manner but in a manner probably without a parallel as will be BOVIII from the sworn testimony of Robert Jluzhcs the only eye-witness to the unfortunate affair which was as follows: Carnelian Who had been drinking very freely during the progress or the dance became quite and rude in his conduct so much so that Robert Hughes told him that if he did not stop drinking and behave himself he would have to leave Carnehan being under the influence of whisky became furiously enraged and heedlesa of Hughes' request contletted his rude and boisterous behavior Finally Hughes lost all patience with him and assisted by his brother have and Jim Healy ejected Carnehan from the house Carnahan then begged them to admit him again saying that be would behave himeelf if they would do so Upon Hughes' refusal to admit him again be commenced cursing and abusing Hughes and throwing himeeil against the door broke it down At this juncture Healy caught hold of Carnelian who had drawn a pistol on Hughes by the arm and by lure- log the muzzle of the pistol downward caused the ball to strike harmlessly against the hearthstone Healy realizing the danger of his position like the Diners present except Rupert Ilughes made a precipitate flight In an instant Hughes and ()urethan grappled and a fierce and terrible struggles tor life followed in which Hughes got hold of Carnehan's right arm and forced it behind his back so that in firing the pistol Carnehan snot himself under Aire ear the ball crashing through the skull and lodging in the brain somewhere near the eye Hughes seeing the blood flowing from till) wound and trickling down his coat sleeve remarked to Carnelian: you I reckon you are satisfied you have shot yourself" Carnelian fell to the floor and since then has been in an uneouscious and also a very critical condition Not even the slightest hope is entertained for hits recovery In fact his survival up to the present time seems almost miraculous when the position of the wound is considered In the trial yesterday Robert and Dave Hughes were acquitted the evidence being CO-IICIUSiVe that Carnehan bad shot himself A great deal of excitement has been occileioned by the conflicting reports concerning the shooting arid the subsequent developments out there IS now no reason to question the verdict of the court that Carnelian shot himself THE AMERICt was the only paper to contain anything like a true version of the allair 1827 "being the report of the Jackson committee of Nashville in answer to one from a simi lar committee at Cincinnati upon the subject of Gen Jackson's marriage accompanied by documents appended thereto" its publication being occasioned by a charge made in "one newe paper of Cincinnati that in the summer af 1790 Gen Jackson prevailed upon the wife of Lewis itobards of Mercer Coen ty Ky to desert her husband and live with him as his wife" This pamphlet Is now in my posseseion at the ellerin it age" A JACKsom The letter from James Breekinridge to which Mr Jackson refers is elated at Fincestle Va 1827 In it be says that when a member of the Virginia Legiiilatureand when Kentuctsy was a district oi Virginia in 1790 a second application for divorce was made to the Legislature by Mr Robards the first husband of the lady whom Gen Jackson married lie says he voted for a judicial inquiry on the subject which be always under-need eventuated in a divorce ills vote he says was intended to liberate her as the in ured party "I new rejoice" sap he in conclusion "that I bad any agency in enabling Mrs Jackson to form a new alliance with a soldier who properly appreciates her worth and treats her with that gracious feeling which la oue to the hest portion of our race" John Overton contributes an equally important letter written at Nashville in 1827 in which he details at length his in1 tonacy in Capt Robards' family in Ker car County Ky where be boarded ween a student of the troubles that arose in the family from what he believed to be groundless suspicious of his wife's in continency on the part of Robards of the affectionate concern of the mother of Robards for her daughter-in-law and of the mother-in law's belief in her chastity and of her final removal to Tennessee by her brother Mr Donelson who came after her at Roberde' request Mr Overton then relates that be came the following year to live in the vicinity of Nashville and that he became a member of the Donelson household where Mrs Roberds bad been taken Andrew Jackson who had come from North Carolina a month previously became also an inmate of tee Doneison home When: Mr Overton left Kentucky Robards coin missioned him to bring about a reunion between his wife and himself and this Mr Overton accoryplished a short time lafterwards Robarus coming to live with his wife at the D0110180E10 Mrs Denni- son being the mother of Itobardi' wife 'tubercle very soon and Mr Overton believed without grounds grew very Jealous of Jackson and an altercation which did not result in an encounter ensued Jackson soon after this led the Donelson house on account of Robards' jealousy and the trouble growing out of it and three or four months later Ito bards left his wife and returned to Ken tucky but it was not long before in came from Kentucky that Ito bards was threatening to return and remove his wife to Kentucky much to the alarm of his wife who de clared she bad given Robards two fair trials and was convinced that she could not satisfy him as a wife Mrs Robards 'fled on receipt of this informatioh according to Mr Overton to Natchez Miss in company with an elderly gen tlemau Col Stark and his faintly and at whose solicitation says Mr Overton Andrew Jackson went along as a protection from Indian attacks going down the river from Nashville to Natchez Jackson returned and resurued the prac tice of law in May1791 Mr Overton continues in the following strain: "About or shortly after this time we were informed that a divorce had been granted by the Legislature or Virginia through the influence of Capt Robards' brother-in-law Maj John Uoliett who was probably in the Legislature at that time This divorce had been anticipated by me The divorce was understood by the people of this country to have been granted by the Legislature of Virginia in the winter of 1790'91 I was in Kentucky In the eummer of 17e1 remained at Mrs Robards1 my former place of residence part of my time and never -understood otherwise than that Capt Robards' divorce was final until the latter part of the year 1793 In the summer of 1791 Oen Jackson went to Natchez and I understood married Mrs itobards then believed to be freed trona Capt itobards by the divorce' in the fail of 1871 returned to Neelville set tied in the neighborhood where they have lived ever since beloved and esteemed by all clasetes" In December 17A Mr Overton states that be learned that the Legislature had not absolutely granted a divorce but had left it for the Mercer court of Kentucky to do where the divorce had been granted He informed (ion Jackson of it and he was enivally surprised and during their conversation Mr Over ton suggested the propriety of Jack-eon's procuring a license and having the ceremony again performed To this Jackson replied that he had long since been married on the belief that a divorce bad been obtained which was the understanding of every person in the country and it was not without difficulty Jackson could be Induced to believe otherwise On their return from East Tennessee where they were at the time of this convereation Jackson obtained it license and the marriage ceremony was performed Charity Never Fitileth At the service at the Church of the Advent last night Dr Gray preached upon the unalterable strength of charitywhich he illustrated irom St Paul's epistle to the themselves a monument that will outlive them and at the same time confer upon the community in 'which they live move and aseociate a blessing the fruits of which falls alike upon generation after generation unlimited by time and reaching far into eternity The world is the better for such men having lived In it and it will be the loeer when they have gone But such men have lived and such live to-day as has been exemplified by the life and work of Fattier Abbott of St Patrick's Church Hardly one year ago lather Abbott undertook the work of erecting a building In Mouth Nashville for the convenience of Catholics in that part of the city and without dollarto begin with be as-binned the undertaking and tteday a magnificent structure nearly complete In all its appointments occupies a beautiful site on South Market street and yesterday was the day set apart for its dedication At 10 o'clock a large crowd had assembled at the entrance but the ritual requiring the house to be bleesed while empty the people waited patiently until this ceremouy which required fifteen or twenty minuteswben the doors were formally opened and the congregation began to file in until all the pews were filled and that too with the admission fee at 50 cents each Father Delaney acted as master of ceremonies Rt Rev Bishop Rademacher blessed and dedicated the claurch while Very Bev Father Gleeson as holding the child Jesus in its arms the whole presenting a scene deeply impressive in its solemnity and equally so in the beauty of its conceptam After mass Father Cileeeon announced the disappointment of Father Abbott and his co-laborers in their expectation of having a distinguished and eloquent divine Father Wimsey to preach the dedication sermon but a telegram bad been received from him stating that it had been made impossible for him to be present and that in his absence the duty bad fallen to himself lie then read the 13th chapter ot 1st Corinthians and again from Genesis chapter 28 and 12111 and 130 verses the story being that of Jacob's Journey from Beersheba to Baran and his dream in which he beheld ftit ladder set up an the earth and the top of it reached to heaven and behold the angels of God eseauding and descending on it and behold the Lord stood above it' ete And again: "And Jacob awaked out of his sleep 'and he said surely the Lord is in this place and 1 itnew it not And he was afraid and said bow dreadful is thie place! This is none other but the house of God and this the gate of heaven" From these scriptures the Rev Father developed some beautiful thoughts with reference to the building of houses lot the worship of God Upon this spot bad been erected a church which had this day been blessed and conmecrated to Clod This is tbe house of God and the gate of heaven The sermon throughout was both earnest and impressive and conveyed to the Inner consciousness of his hearers truths that will never be erased or forgotten lie concluded by congratulating Father Abbott on the success of his undertak The
