Miss Mary Gross, of Fort Scott was here last week from Friday until Sunday afternoon with her aunt and uncle, D. W. Boyer and family. Mrs. Kate Lahman celebrated her 54th birthday anniversary Sunday with a roast goose dinner and all the things that go with it to snake one feel like life is worth living, and is so helpful to make us forget our debts and sorrows for the time being.

The Otis Leatherman family was with her, of course, and she was also remembered by a number of gifts from her loved ones. Finley. Moore has moved from the house on the hill north of town to the other house belonging to E. E. Roberts, where the Eph Denton family lived for several years.

Mrs. Carl Meyer and daughter Frieda report they have sold $216 worth of turkeys this fall. Robert Pellett, wife and daughter Ellen spent Sunday with Mrs. Allen Pellett. Charley Johnson, who has bought the L.

Brown. Esley Bowen was delivering fat hogs to Roberts Monday. Mrs. Fred Dungger is at Eureka Springs, helping to care for her sister, Lillian Van Bibber, who Is sick with typhoid fever in that city. Miss Lillian, with her parents, were here for a month and went to the springs for her father's health, and she has taken this terrible feyer.

They left on the noon train for a visit with their son, Arthur Gillespie and family at Wymore, and have been visiting their son Fred and family at Bolivar, The Cherry Grove people have hired Rev. Whitney for a year, paying-. $25 a month salary for two.

Sunday after- (Last. Week's News) Mrs. S. W. Rose is quite seriously sick this Week.

At present she seems some better. Bernadeen Sattambaugh who has been in a critical condition for some time past, is still in a very serious condition. Frank Harkness returned home last week from a week's stay at Ord, looking up some business prospects, Miss Ernie Smith returned to her work in Kansas City Sunday; but was called home again Tuesday by a more serious turn in the condition of Berna-deene. Bob Rose arrived on the night train Tuesday, being called from his worR at Hutchinson by the critical illness of his mother. Miss Jennie Hummel accompanied by her nephew, Max Ford, took the afternoon train Thursday for Coffeyvllle where she will visit a sister and an aunt.

Mrs. 1. W. Herald was called, to Oklahoma City ahe, first of the. week by the word of the death of her father.

The old gentleman was quite advanced In years and was most blind and for a number of years has been most an invalid. Mrs. 1 Cora Ford and Mrs. Lizzie Reeves were down to Port Scott on Thursday of last week. Mrs.

E. says that he Is now located at Larned, at the state hospital, that he has a good job as jobs are at state institutions and he rather feels like he will stick dur ing the winter. Mrs. Cunningham and mother returned home the first of the week from a visit with relatives near Howard, Kas. Miss Martin from tho state agricultural college gave a very Interesting talk with practical illustration to a limited number of ladies at the M.

W. A. Hall Saturday afternoon- The ladies who head Miss Martin's talk were very loud in their praises and said that it was deserving of a big attendance. A number of the strip coal pits have opened up this week and now many a coal smoke is seen pouring from.chim-ney where an occasional wood smoke was seen. Mesdames Thayer and Brush and children drove down from Merwin on Sunday for a day with relatives, as the rain began about the going home time they remained in town until next day.

Mrs. Hendrix and Ray drove down to Fort Scott Saturday afternoon to take Mrs. Williams to the V'Katy." depot so she could get a arain to Moran where she will stay with Mrs. Chas. Herrin who has recently returned home from thn hospital.

Armistice Day was generally observed here. In the afternoon there was no school. The children put on an impromptu parade on the down-town streets and had a general good time. Many of our people drove down to Ft. Scott'and others took the train.

The meeting Saturday night at the M. W. A. hall was a great success. After a talk by, Prof.

Crosswhite as to the nature and object of the "Legion" John Hall of Pleasanton was Introduced. His address was just the one that seemed to please every one and many were the compliments that were heard After the talks ap reliminary organization was formed, until the next regular meeting which will be held on Monday evening at 8 o'clock. A very pressing Invitation la extended to all ex-service men to be present at this meeting Monday night as then a permanent organization will, be effected. PETERSBURG. M. A. Shipley returned Inst week to their home, after spending ten weeks visiting in northern and southern Missouri, and northern Kan--iis, visiting their two daughters and other relatives and pd neighbors. It was a visit long to be remembered by the kind treatment that everyone gave them. But.

and Mrs. Chnrley Johnson are moving to their new home east of Garland. The funeral services of Miss Ruth Lowe were held in the Godfrey school house Friday, November 14, conducted by Rev. R. B.

Query of the Unity Holiness church of Scott. Kansas. The house was filled with sorrowing friends and relatives. Many were unable to get in. The choir consisting of her schoolmates sang "Jesus Paid It All," "Jesus, Lover of My Soul, and "Nearer My God to Thee.

The gathering was a very sad one and as the minister preached from The Act, 26-19, The Two Powers, he made quite, an impression on them as he explained how the Satanic power and Jesus' power mot, in the 14th verse. What a transformation took place. At. the same time he pleaded with all to give Christ a chance to destroy the' power of sin which Is in every man's heart, before more, of awful deeds were done. Her coffin was covered with beautiful wreaths of flowers.

A large concourse of friends followed the remains to the Clarksburg cemetery where she was laid away. Her father, mother, sisters and brothers the deepest sympathy of the entire community. WEST BETHEL. Mrs. Arthur Roof and children visited a few days last week with Mrs.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ramsey went to Fort Scott Monday to have Mrs. Ramsey's ear treated. She has been suffering with it for some time.

Mrs. Otto Ramsey visited Tuesday with Mrs. Lute Ramsey. Mr. and Mrs.

Will Harrington accompanied Charles Harrington and his mother to Devon Saturday night to attend the harvest festival. Louis Webb and daughter, "Moxlne" were dinner guests at the J. W. Johnson homo last Thursday. Mr. and.

Mrs. Killion visited at the George Killion home in the afternoon while Mrs. Webb and her daughter 'remained at the Johnston' homo. Ear! Herford hr.s been operating his engine to fill Sewell Mc- Crum's silo. Clarence Schafer of Devon purchased a cow from Earl Herford last week.

William Simmons, Freddie Bloesser, Tressie Embry, Lester Vigo Nelson and Mabel Simmons.

Will Typer's last Friday. Some of the ladies met to clean tHe church on Thursday ana Friday of this week. Mrs. O. Sweeney and son Harry and Mrs.

Scott Barlow, and children were shoppers in Savonburg Saturday. Some of the young folks met at Concord school house last Friday night to plan for a play to be given for the benefit of the Epworth League. Alvin Mason and Mrs. Carrie Ralls and children were all day visitors with and Mrs. Sam Mason last Sunday.
