beginning Thursday evening 7 :45 and adjourning with the Friday night program Dr Ramey is moderator Last Saturday's Daily Oklahoman featured a front-page articlet hic brought hope and courage to the Christian forcs of this state Let us all thank God and pray thily for Sertcr Lee vho is to make a fight to bar liquor and vice from our army camps It is going to ta'Ke lots of moral rout age for a to take such a stand and lead such a fight in poor old liquor-soaked Washington pecially when the Secretaries of War and Navy are reported to have declared they want beer for the boys We all wish Senator Lee could 'now how the ChliStian forces of this State appreciate his leadership in this vital matt-r and how earnestly we will be praying for him An excerpt the article follow: "Senator Josh Lee said Friday he will offer as an amendment to the pending bill lowering the draft age a provision banning all liquor and vice from army camp ZiOnVS The amendment ill be practically the same as the Sheppard bill which would bar all liquor in army camps and would direct the army to set up a zone around camp here liquor and vice would be prohibited Senator Currie of South Italsota has introduced a bill to lomer the draft age from 20 to IS and thus tap a reservoir of upwards of 2000- 000 men "If we are going to take these youths into the army it is more important than ever that our army camps be protected by law" Senator Lee said Lee is a member of the senate military affairs committee which will report on the Gurney bill He said he will offer his amendment in committee and if it fails there he will offer it again on the floor of the senate "I believe the amendment will be adopted" Lee continued "I think the Sheppard bill would have passed had it ever been brought to a vote of the senate This amendment would make the army responsible for enforcing the ban on liquor and vice The argument for such a protection is stronger than ever now when the army is considering taking boys IS years old" On the question of lowering the draft age Lee said he was willing to trust the judgment of the military leaders" Please pray for the Pastor that he may be in God's will and be used of God in delivering messages to bless and to save souls Sermons Appreciated My Soldier Lad "My soldier lad I have one thought to leave you Before you say good-by and go away Let not the glitter of the world deceive Its honors fade and wither in a day A Few Letters From Scores Received TrirAy's report will be the finest in her history We believe we ha 7e led all churches not only in the Association but in the entire South in the number of additions and perhaps in baptisms During the last associational year we have received 615 new members into the fellowship an average of almost 12 per Sunday and there was not a Sunday without additions to the church The pastor baptized 187 of that number Our total Sunday offerings for the associational year amounted to $6174238 We mention these things not in any spirit of boasting but in humility that God has been so good to us who are so unworthy and to the credit of the faithful who have borne the burden in the heat of the day and to His praise and glory Every session will be featured by ''My Favorite Sermon" At 1:30 Friday afternoon Dr Harvey will preach "My Favorite Sermon" Our church organizational work will be presented and all mission causes will be stressed Our church is entitled to twenty messengers (these will be named in this week's church business conference Wednesday evening) Keep your heart clean worship the God that made you Bend not you knee to Mammon's false delights Only a life of uprightness can aid you To reach your great objective on the heights Church Attendance Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Seminary Hill Texas August 28 1942 Dear Brother Harvey: I want to express to you my genuine appreciation for your sermon published in your church paper on the text 'Except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish" I heartily agree with the emphasis you give and also deplore the situation which prevails in our country generally in relation to the liquor question It does seem that liquor and its related interests have priority over everything else I am confident that we all need to speak out plainly and boldly and continuously along this line With the very best of wishes I am Sincerely yours Head President What My Absence Did I What My Presence 1 It made some question the re- I Did ality of religion Let those who will seek out forbidden pleasure And trail their snowy garments in the dust Keep in your strong young heart the matchless treasure of purity and plate your daily trust In Him who set the starry world in motion And holds within His palm the mighty ocean" Chicago Tribune 2 It made some think that I was a pretender 3 It made many think that I regarded my spiritual wel fare and that of others as a matter of small concern 4 It weakened the effect of church service 5 It made it harder for the pastor to preach 6 It discouraged the brethren therefore robbed them of a blessing Trinity Tidings 1 It caused people to have confidence in me 2 It made people know that I regarded my spiritual welfare and that of others as a matter of great importance 3 It had a good effect on the service 4 It made my friends feel more welcome 5 It encouraged the brethren and helped the pastor in his work 6 It caused others to come to the House of God It made my lite stronger for another week It removed stumbling blocks from the sinner's path It pleased God that I was happy It caussed others to say "He practices what he preaches" Chimes down let us kneel the NEW MEMBERS: We are happy to welcome into the fellowship of our church last Sunday the following: By Letter MR AND MRS DOYLE JOHNSON remain at Trinity and continue to grow an aggressive militant church that will be outstanding in our state and one that the forces of evil will fear If it should happen that you do not remain with Trinity for the cause of God if you can at all stay in Oklahoma City and rally to your support a people who love God and His cause better than all else and will support such a program as yours Sometimes I wonder if it would not be better to have some great independent churches that take orders from none other than God and are champions of His great truths led by a Godly fearless preacher as I think you are I shall remember you in my prayers and may God speed you in the work you have started You have the support of a lot of people in and out of the City You will pardon me if I have seemed to offer advice I did not intend to do so but have tried to speak the feeling of my soul May God's richest blessings be upon you 7 It caused others to stay away 7 from church It made it harder for me to 8 meet the temptations of the week 9 9 It gave the devil more power over lost souls 10 10 It encouraged the habit of non-church going "0 come let us worship and bow Lord our 95:6 7 8 9 9 The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Louisville Kentucky August 21 1912 Dear Dr Harvey: Thank you for copy of your church paper containing your sermon preached August 9 This is the strongest most courageous convincing deliverance that have seen on the subject So moved was I that I tried yesterday to preach along the same line in one of our Louisville churches I wish every minister in the nation might have a copy of this sermon and bring a message of similar import to every congregation in the nation With strange blindness and stupidity we have permitted the liquor dealers and liquor lovers to deceive the nation and as you point out we are reaping the fearful consequences The Eighteenth Amendment may have been repealed but fiat" has not been repealed We are not repenting and literally we are perishing Dr Fuller is taking hold in a splendid way as our new President We look forward to a student body of some 500 at the opening of the session September 15 I wish that you May the blessings of God attend you as you study and train for the most effective living and service First Baptist Church Mills Pastor Wellston Oklahoma Sept 7 1942 Dear Brother Harvey: For several days I have planned to write ou relative to your outspoken position on certain issues in Oklahoma City I am indeed glad that Baptists have at least one preacher in the City who has ability and nerve enough to challenge the godlessness of our times and ideals However I have been somewhat grieved at the little if any support you have had from your fellow pastors It is indeed a sin against God the whipped attitude the majority of our preachers have today Too many of them trust the brethren for their job instead of the Lord and of course they must please men in order to hold their jobs Of course I do not know the feeling of the majority of your members but I trust you have been there long enough to have the support of the best of your people I surely trust that you do have and that you have sufficient support that they will demand a public apology of the bunch that opposed your stand or withdraw fellowship from them Those who oppose you on your outspoken convictions have no part or place in a program like yours I sincerely believe you "HAVE COME TO THE KINGDOM FOR SUCH A TIME AS THIS" How we need and have for a long time a Baptist preacher who is big enough to challenge the evils of this day How it hurts my soul that our preachers are so tied by a machine that seemingly is interested only in promoting itself rather than the cause of a Great God and challenging the evils that are sapping the spiritual life from many of Gods people When the time comes that they can support a man who is big enough and called of God to do a great job they simply remain silent or even oppose him I trust that )ou have no idea of leaving Oklahoma Our Women Join In Day of Prayer For Berkeley California September 4 1942 Dear Dr Harvey: Your telegram to the church at Miami last week I read with a great deal of admiration I am so glad you are "sticking by your to do so might have been considered by many as admitting defeat and you are most certainly not defeated! Of course ultimately people always have greater re spect for the man who really possesses the courage of his convicitions who knows what he believes and why he believes it and is not afraid to keep right on keeping on It is indeed unfortunate hen recognized church leaders pastors run for cover when the first shots are fired particularly about matters of keeping the Sabbath itself! However negative goodness is often like that hen it must choose between alternatives must stand the real test State Missions The Woman's Missionary Society of our church Mrs Nelson president ill join in a Day of Prayer for State Missions next Wednesday September 16 Under the direction of Mrs Tom Hefton chairman an excellent program has been arranged to feature and include every phase of Baptist mission work in Oklahoma The morning session will be held from 10 to 12 o'clock Those attending will bring the sandwich lunch to be served at noon The afternoon session will be from 1 to 2:30 o'clock Mrs Berta Spooner Corresponding Secretary of the Oklahoma Baptist has been invited to speak The evening session will be held in the church 8 -'clock Mrs Maude Brockway whose work among the colored women is sponsored by the Associational will be the principal speaker She is to have a group of singers from local colored churches Again my respect and esteem in this hour hen the whole world needs more leaders with courage of such quality as yours and to you and Mrs Harvey at this time we want you to know that as former attendants of services at your church we are with you all the way Sincerely yours I.
