bittiness eland ppiv to JAMES BELL Itecortter Boy' al14 Chi Milli's The Nashville Land Improvement Company IIONV has seven salaried men on the road in the north and northwestworking up an interest in the eale of lots to take place May 24-27th Besides these are a number of gentlemen interested who are doing the same kind of work on their own responsibility Dr Pierce received a telegram front Cincinnati yesterday making inquiries as to rates from that city saying that a large party will come from there Mr Joe Harris representative from Knox in the present legislature is to be one of the auctioneers and is now traveling in the interest of the sale The successful sales at Florence and South Pittsburg have done much to inspire confidence in the coming sale here It is certain that no enterprise in Nashville ever had so large a number of prominent and trusted business men interested in its success Mr Charles Jacob nine times' mayor of Louisville visited the grounds of the company yesterday and was perfectly delighted with the design scope and prospects of the enterprix4e "I have never seen so grand an enterprise undertaken by a single company" he exclaimed Before he left Dr Pierce had arranged with Col Jacob to take charge of the company's business in Louisville and he will devote much of his time and energy to developing interest in the coming sale Telegrams from the agents now on the road betoken a large and growing interest in every city yet visited by them The following facts and figures will give the reader some definite idea of the Nashville iron steel and charcoal works: The company bearing this name is One of the most important of those that are to be located on the property of the Nashville Land I Improvement Company at West Nashville The-preparations for the actual construction of the works are at an advanced stage The foundations are in and the work remaining consists mainly of setting up the machinery There are to be eighty charcoal ovens and two blast furnaces of fifty tons capacity each Some idea of the magnitude of the undertaking may be formed from the quantity of material to be used The construction of the charcoal ovens alone will require 600 car-loads of brick 150 car-loads of sand 1500 barrels of cement 130 tons castings fifty tons of rolled iron $20- 000 worth of copper 1500000 feet of lumber and eight 100-horse power boilers The contract for the oonstruction of the furnaces was given to a Philadelphia concern and WO car-loads of iron fixtures will be shipped from that city to West Nashville immediately Eight hundred thousand tee-brick will be required Not less than 300 laborers will be needed during the construction The c6rcoal will of course be used for making pig-iron in the furnace department The other products such as wood alcohol and acetate of lime have been largely gold ahead There will be a ready market for everything that the company will produce This enterprise is under the immediate direction of Gem Willard Warner who is well known as an expert in this line 111110 An inquiry is being made into the constitutionality of the bill passed two years ago prohibiting the playing of baseball on Sunday The legal counsel for the baseball association Mr John Vertrees claims that there was irregularity in the manner of the passage of the bill A Banner reporter this morn1ng visited the office of the secretary-of state and found senate bill No 380 which by the endorsements on the back' was shown to have passed first reading March 20th second reading March 21st and third reading April 1st This is also correctly shown by the senate journal The house jornrd the reporter was informed by Mr Tanner shows that the same bill passed first reading in the house on April 3d and third reading the next day April 4th The law requires that a bill to become a law shall pass three separate readings on three separate days Senator McDowell the author of the bill ha also examined the bill and Mr Tanner says that he claims that the bill was passed regularly for the reason that there was a house bill (No 2231 which had passed two readings and that a substitution was effected as is often done which he thinks explains the faet that no mention is of the passage of the senate bill on second reading Mr Vertrece the attorney for the baseball I association could -not be found but MrJohn Morrow president of the Southern League said that they had found enough irregularities in the passage of the bill to kill it He said the most important point discovered was that the record showed that the bill passed its first reading on the sec-one day of the month and its third reading on the third day thus leaving no intervening day for its second reading which is in direct violation of the constitution Mr Morrow said that they were ready for a test of the matter in the courts and were only waiting for the grand jury to bring in an VOR of three MOM on Sumr men north of tear in warehouse property Assessments Taxes and In ranee carefully looked after Refer to all the well-known citizens of Nashville Telephone 18 residence 312 tybfl tyltlyna Ty The reference in yesterday's Banner to the emit brought by the New York Standard Charcoal Company against companies using the wood alcohol patenta in Hickman connty Tenn created some flurry on account of the construction placed on the last clause of the article The suit is brought by the New York company which controls the Pierce patent at Goodrich in Hickman county and an injunction Is asked to restrain the Warner and 2Etna iron companiee from using said patent in that county This was explicitly stated in the Banner's article but the mention of the further fact that the court is asked to enjoin the Standard Charcoal Chemical Company froth -issuing other licenses under these patents in Hickman county was riot so clearly stated although the paragraph was logically connected with the preceding statement The suit does not affect the right of the Standard Charcoal a Chemical Company to issue licenses under the Pierce patents but involves only the question of the right of that company to iisue licenses to others in Hickman county than the New York company which claims the exclusive rights in that county under the license granted to that company by Dr Pierce vb DIRECTORS' MEETING IIETLIFF 9 SIS CRURCET STREET
