by Officer Vining The wound is not a serious one and Ewing will be aide to be out in a few days Oftieers Vining' and Summitt while In through through Buck's alley in South Nashville last night bad their attention attracted by a pistol shot Hurrying in the direction of the report they met Ewing and another negro coming down the alley at a rapid gait The negroes were stopped and interrogated by the officers Ewing trade an attempt to push by Officer Vining and after getting several feet from him ran his hand into his pocket bringing forth a pistol Offloer Vining caught a glimpse of the weapon and in an instant drew his own Not wishing to take any chances the of-liver got the drop on Ewing and fired The bullet entered Ewing's right leg just below the groin inflicting a painful though not serious wound Ewing fell to the ground suffering the most acute pain and he afterwards stated to the offfeer that he did not draw the pistol for the purpose of using it but wanted to get rid of the weaVon This statement was evidently correct as the revolver was found lying on the opposite side of a fence where it had been thrown by the negro The action of Ewing however came very near costing him his life as darkness tire-vented the officer from divining the negro's real intention Ewing was arrested on a charge of carrying a pistol and after being registered at the station-house be was high spirits over their showing in the first game of the season They are much pleased with the hospitable treatment they received at the hands of their Memphis hosts On their arrival they were taken in charge by Mr and Mrs Lem Banks who were eminently successful in their efforts to entertain them Together with a party of young ladies they spent the tuoruing viewing the ighug of the city the top
