Now I would not ask the doctor to do anything non-democratic for any consideration knowing it is utterly inconsistent with the genius of his nature But let him reconsider is it not an essentially democratic principle that the people should have an opportunity of expressing their wish on any question at the ballot-box We think the doctor will after due deliberation submit to submission I hope the doctor will give us some well-digested views on the state issues in this canvass Two years sga he was so engrossed in the discussion ot the abstract principles of ieffersonian democracy and national issues that his hearers failed to get a clear idea of his views on the homely questions of practical concern Dr Wood has made a diligent and active chairman of the executive committee and his course has been generally approved His evident desire is to 'get the full expression of his party ouevery question or candidate and to avoid all chicanery or efforts to defeat the will of the majority Rev A -Phillips pastor of the Baptist church here and at Tullahoma has an appointment to preach once a month at the towns of Normandy and Haley li Charleston dafeata Atlanta yesterday by a score of 7 to 4 Sullivan and McVey were the battery for Charleston Conway and Lynch for Atlanta This was the only game played in the south OTHER osatre Detroit12 Boston 2 Washington 7 St1uis 6 Philadelphia 9 Kansas aty 6 New York 11 Chicagol PAttaburg 6 Baltimore TO-DAVS GA ILL The topic of conversation everywhere to-day is the game between Memphis and Nashville at the park this afternoon The two leading batteries of the and Shell-hams Knouff and oppose each other The weather promises all that is desired and the prospects for fine sport are excellent HOW THEY STAND Won Loot Per et Raab uanta---- 83 23 5s9 1 sohville 23 21 571 I Savaanakt--- 3S 21 371 I em phis 2S 24 5:4 Ma con 17 24 529 4 21 2A 41 5 Charieston---- 22 31 407 Et Chattanooga-- 20 E4 370 7 HONER TALENT It is becoming more apparent every day that the Southern League will never become a financial success under the existing high salaries paid While It is a conceded fact that the patronage 01 the game is proportionately as large In the south as anywhere yet this as it not aufasiently large to justify the Incurred by tiae various baseball oociations in the Southern League Something that will keep up the high standard which the game has attained and at the same time reduce expenses must be done if the league would continue The most practicable scheme that presents itself is the employment of home talent which could be secured for hall the amount paid now This would not only produce the desired effect but would doubtless receive better patronage It is but natural to assume that a city would take more pride in a team composed of home material than ens ol strangers And then too it would give employment to a good many young men who would only be too anxious to accept an opportunity of this kind The several southern players in the league have demonstrated that there is as good material here as anywhere the only thing wanting is development Suppose the excellence of play was lowexed a little in the leagne would it not be equally shared by all? The games would be in as much doubt and the result awaited with as much anxiety as now It will be remembered that the amateur games played before the formation of the league were as well attended is the championship games are now and if anything there was more interest ttken in them They aroused local which cannot be taken in strangers It is well known that every good player that is brought out in the south is eagerly scooped by the northern clubs Instead then of going abroad to secure raw material and then going through the process of development why not employ home talent and let the boys of the south reap the benefits of such training 11 every southern club were to enter into an agreement of this kind the receipts would be as large expenses reduced one-hall interest in the game still maintained if not increased and then we would have a southern league in every sense The chief objection to be urged to this is that the northern clubs would still offer inducement to the crack players of the south and take them away bat by encouraging southern players the supply of good players would equal the demand 1111111TELOUS BARGAINS AT I The Sunday evening pedestrian on Bridge avenue has doubtless been attracted by a crowded hall and music just at the termination of the eastern approach Last Sunday in fact every Sunday of people enjoyed for a few minutes or for three hours as each individual may elect a serrictiof gospel songs Yesterday a Banner reporter stepped in to rest and learn something of its real meaning and the scope of its work He found a my pleasant hall neatly and comfortably furnished with chairstand tables and newspapers to read On one side was a cabinet organ flanked by a pile of music books Inquiry developed the following facts: For months past certain thoughtful mothers and other philanthropic women of East Nashville have been wishing br some place other than a whisky shop for young men to meet and spend half an hour This idea took shape about the 1st of May Mrs Judge East Mrs George Mizell Mrs Gurley Mrs Dr DuPre and some other lathes rented a store-room and opened the Bridge Avenue Temperance Home Here every day during the week they sell ice cream lemonade and cigars The hell is open every evening for the same purpose save Monday and Thursday evenings The society has a certain capital raised by subscription The hall is rented and the rent paid until next May The sales aro made' at a profit and the profits are turned into capital which will go to increase the woefulness of the enterprise Each of the elderly lathes interested presides one day in the week and is assisted by such young ladies as will volunteer their services The following is the order of their services in this particular: Monday Mrs Mizell Tuesday Mrs Gurley Wednesday Mrs Warren Thursday Mrs Armstrong Friday Mrs East Saturday Mrs DuPre On Sunday afternoon the organ takes the place of ice cream tables one of the ladies presides there others look after the corn- fort of visilon and a service of song is kept up for two hours In this service members of the Young Men's Christian Association take en active part What is done with the two nights the ice cream parlors are not open? It is this: Oa Monday and Thursday nights the Sunday's chapel and the week-day saloon is turned into a school-room It is a free school The only condition to scholarship is that -the applicant does not have the opportunity of attending school in the day Mrs Judge East Mr and Mrs George Mizell and Mr Brown are at present teaching but other help is needed The school has grown and a genuine interest is being shown The ladies who began this work are quiet and unobtxustve their charities but their enthusiasm Industry and patience are unbounded Already they see the cope and possibilities enlarging They ask only sympathy and practical encouragement in the way of trade Policeman's Views Mn Prince living at SS West Fair street Atlanta has been troubled for sevral mouths wills an ugly form of stteruled smite a copious aud offensive discharge from both tostrits Her ystem became so affected aed reduced that she was confined to bed at my house for werkg acd received the attention of three ph s'clans and usel three bottles of an Exteuffivaly advertiazd blood remedy all without the least benefit St finely commenced the we of with a decided implovement at once and when ten bottlee had been need she was entirely cured of all symptoms of catarrh It gave her an appetite and ism-eyed her strength rapidly sad I cheerfully commend It as a quick and cheap tonic and Blood Purifier 3 GLOEll rtglef tilLe Atlanta January lath ISM SOME OF A 1100K OF WONDER!
