were at least ten days earlier in ripening and the straw seems to be stiffer standing up better than some other varieties Several farmers sowed Kanotas last spring most of them reporting good results There should be a fair supply of Kanota seed oats in the county for a limited acreage this coming year but the Fulghum seed are very limited It is suggested that to sow half the crop to the early variety with a- later maturing variety sown as a safety first proposition is advisable This practice will also ex-tried the harvesting period preventing the over ripening of the last oats to be cut George Yarborough of Mead is of the opinion that the Kanotas are especially adapted to up land or the thinner soils while he believes that Texas red is better adapted to the heavier soils It is not well to Jump at conclusions based on one years tests only yet there is a great opportunity to increase our oat yields by planting varieties best adapted to this section of the state as well as to our individual soil type Increase of 827000 Bales Since Laat Prediction October 1 Huge Acreage A cotton crop larger than ever fore grown has been produced in the South this year The Department of Agriculture Monday placed the indicated production at 17454000 bales of 500 pounds gross weight or about 8343010000 pound's of lint cotton This is about 643000000 pounds of lint produced last year The estimate was based on onditions existing Oct 18 to which date 8722066 running bales of this year's crop had been ginned according to the Census Bureau's announcement There was an increase of 827000 bales in prospective production Oct 1 when the last estimate wai made and Oct 18 Uncertainty exists as to how much of the crop will be harvested the crop remitting board announced in view of the present low price of There is quite a widespread interest over the county in fruit growing this year judging from the amount of nursery stock being sold in the county this fall Some time ago a survey was made among the oldest orchard men of the county with the view of ascertaining the best varieties to set for home orchard varieties were selected that would come the nearest affording a family fruit during the entire season this resulted in the planning of a model one acre orchard thought to be best adapted to acre orchard includes a wide variety soils in this section of the state This of fruit that has proven the most hardy and the surest bearers Grapes berries and small fruits are included along with peaches plums pears and apptes The exact number of trees and vines have been figured orchards believing that fruit is a very important part of the "living at home" plan Commercial orcharding however should only be undertaken by those who are thoroughly familiar with the business yet Durant These were sown in the regular way with no fertilizer used the purpose being to find out if there is a best variety of oats for the average Bryan county farm The results are very interesting but can not be depended on too much as results may be entirely different in yield over a period of years due to seasonal conditions yet some of the data may be used to good advantage especially as to earliness of maturity which was a very important factor this past year as there were at least two weeks difference in time of maturity between the several varieties Eight out-field stations were locatd over the state all carrying the same oat experiments they are located at Pau Is Valley Ardmore Durant Mealester Eufaula Okmulgee Sapulpa and Nowata The varieties used with yields are as follows
