the details of its machinery before formulating say general plan of oirerelions We will go to Boston the latter part of next weve to hear the opinions of cattle importers and others interested in the matter of removal of the cattle quarantine from Waltham to Littleton mass An Astiociated Preen reporter asked the Commisaioner of Agriculture to-day for informatien respecting the outbreak of pleura-pneumonia in Missouri lie said in reply that the disease bad taut far been confined to it single county and 1 at Ahe people of the State were acting energetically and intelligently for it eradication Their greet difficulty was lack of funds He thought the Legislature Of Missouri ought to be called together to make liberal provisions to meet this emergency But there was a doubt whether its members bad been educated no to the point of taking the only efficient means posaible for the supoossion of this scoutge It was he saM fact that no outbreak of this dieesse either in the United States or abroad had ever been suppressed without governmental aid The Bureau of Animal industry of the Department while rendering Invaluable services still lacked the power under former interpretations of the law to take steps which experience proved to be most effective in eases of Ole kind There wag no known way of onppressing pleuropneumonia but by killing every animal which had been either affected or exported Having been kiled they ehould be buried deeply bides and ell for the disorder is communicable after death The orginal law establishing the Bureau of Animal Industry gives authority for the expenditure of such a portion of the annual appropriation as may be becessary for invtatigation disinfection and quarantine but does not in direct terms authorize the expenditu of money to help pay for cattle to be killed Mr Colman entertains the opinion that inasmuch as death Is the only effective method of disinfecting where pluero-pneumonia is concerned a fair interpretation of the law would sanction the expenditure of a portion of the appropriations for this purpose He intends to lay the matter before Attorney General Garland for an opinion The insidious and alarming nature of infection was he paid illustrated bi the origin of the present outbreak A young bull was purchased in Ohio or Illinois and taken to Missouri it was suggested as a possibility at the time of purchase that the animal had been exposed to pleuro-pneumimic and for this reason it was quarantined for three months after which it was allowed to run with the herd belongleg to the Insane Asylum Almost immediately the herd bee tree infected The entire herd has been slaughtered About hundred animals have been killed but the Commissioner thinks many more should be sacrificed "The expenditure" said the Commissioner "of filly thousand dollars now may save us an epidemic which will perhaps cost half a million to suppress two or three weeks hence" INTERNAL REVENUE CoLidtotIONti buildings fell because there was nothing to hold them together Bedduseik the builder of the tenements has constructed block after block in the neighborhood of yesterday's accident Philip 1litUEM11 a builder said: "The houses fell because they were rotten They were built of refuse Look at the bricks that were being used They are not bricks but halves aud quarters and chunks of bricks poorly mortar with sand will mix this loam and while wet It is somewhat sticky So soon as it is dry it does not stick at all That is what ailed these buildings The walls were made with brickbats stuck Chattanooga at Macon Americans at Columba" Memphis at Birmingham This afternoon at o'clock umpires will call "play" between the various teams bulls-tined above and the contest for the pennant of the Southern League will begin What will be the result is of course a matter of great doubt The Americans enter the diamond at Columbus to-day in unquestionably fine form and with the best record yet made by a Southern club In addition to haying won games upon their own grounds they have duriug the past two days on a new dia mond and before strangers with just any body in the box woe two sucoesaive and easy victories To-day however they face a team much stronger than the Moutgomerys and for mineral reasons the cou test is doubtful In the first place they play before an audience that cot cts the Columbus team to win the championship and oat may in various ways do things to rattle their visitors The present umpiring system is also open to Many objections and oat may interfere with the fairness of the game strong complaint has already been made by visiting ebbs against the umpires of the Georgia clubs and in one instance one of these umpire has been formally discharged The Americans will experience a change of atmosphere and the fatigue that is incidental to travel and these things may do much to unfit them for the excellence of work with which Nashville audiences are familiar Notwithstanding all of these intonveuiences and obstacles it is confidently expected that the Americans will beat the Columbus team to-day On their lint trip abroad the locals play 12 games with four other clubs If they return victorious over eight of these clubs there is nothing to keep them from winning the pennant st ben they come back to NashvtLe they will then be faced by each other club in succession and with the lair play that hi guaranteed on their own diamond there is little quesdon as to their ability to win with ease After playing theColumbusclub the Americans visit the Birmingham then the Macon and then the CHICA008 VS As no account of the Atlanta' Monday game could be gotten by telegraph it was at once reasonably certain that they had met with an overwhelming defeat The Atlanta Constitution of yesterday morning states that the Chicago won the game by a score of 24 to 3 The same paper as usual after a defeat tells why the home club waeheaten The Constitution will find out beiore the season is over that excuses will by no means alter records or in any way avail the highly cracked up Georgians in the race for the petulant The um team faced the Atlantas that played against the Americans here last Friday with the exception of the outfield A comparison of the records of the two games will show the comparative strength of the Atlantots and the Americans In the games with the 4hicagoes the Americans made 7 base bits off of Clarkson with a total of 10 while on sit-ahoy the Atlanta made Only 6 hits oft of the same pitcher The Chicagos made 22 base hits off of Atlanta's brag pitcher Dundonx with a total of al The same club made off of Crowell base hits with a total of 13 In the game in which the Chicagos defeated the and which was pronounced by the Constitution to be "a revelation" the visiting club made four errors in the game here they matte Only four errors and yet the Americans but for a 'wretch would have tied them anddid hold them down to the most excitiog tip test of the season The Americans made five errors while the At-'antes made fourteen he Atlantan have been bragging while the Americans have been quietly at work As a a consequence the home club is not forced by any overwhelming deteat to have its excuses an apologies paraded in print "OH MY AMERICANS As an Indication of the confidence reposed by local sports in the Americans a few bets cud propositions to bet were made yesterday One gentleman offered to bet two to one that the A meri ans would come home with nine victories out of the twelve contests Nobody would that the Americana would beat any other two named clubs for the championship Still another offered to bet that Atlanta would not be higher than third in the contest for the Southern pennant A
