before an Omaha audience in hie new play of "Humbug" The p'ay abounds in humor and is almost equal to Marsden's great production of "Cheek" Of coarse Roland Reed as the "Humbug" ia the center of attraction and he is fully equal to any and all emergencies Mr Reed has excellent opportunities and he improves them one and all His impersonation abounding in capital touches ia decidedly a bet ter piece of actirg than his performance in "Cheek" Though there are similar-hit in the leading characters in each play "Humbug" fives the comedian much more scope Mr Reed's persona tion will add to hie popularity and the piece itself is ours to be liked by the pub tic Last pight the comedian sang "He's Not a Marrying Man" with much humorous effect The role also enables him to display to much advantage his skill in "Dittch" dialect so that ipenay fairly be said that In the leading character of "Humbug" Mr Mardeen has given Roland Reed an excellent "fit" New PARK attraction for the present Her City After Failure of the Randall-Cole School Chat With Beecher An Inquiry at the bookstores develops the fact that new orders for Miss Murfree's volume of short stories cannot be supplied under a month or until the seventh edition now in press is ready A member of the Legislature standing near the fountain facing the facade of the capitol Saturday remarked that without blowing it to be positively a fact be would venture the assertion that the capitol has not been clean ed since ite erection and he pointed to the blackened capitals of the colum their mingled Ionic and Corinthian arciPitecture begrimmed with accumulated dust observing that in this clear cli mate free of moth rust fogs and smoke we ought not to permit what can be easily prevented There has by the way been introduced in the Senate a resolution for a thorough examination of the exterior stone work which is scaling Should this pass and include a thorough scraping of the carved columns this generation would discover that a thing of beauty had been hidden from view The farmers meet to-morrow night st the Capitol and will listen to an addrei a by Col Robert Gates on matters of interest to farmers Senator Shaver one of the arivanced agriculturists is this Stale is a strong avocate of a dog law but regards any good legislation in that direction as not within reasonable expecir lion at the present time A delegation from Knoxville was in the city last week in the interests of the new charter to their city One of them said to an American reporter that the new charter as raseed by tbe Senate Saturday had been modeled mainly on the reform government of Nashville The destruction of ward representation had not however been so much the purpose as the matter of reaching a large moneyed accumulation in that commn nity which now escapes assessment because out of reach while men of small possesions are taxed to their utmost boldlogs The failure of the Randall Cole Indus trial School bill was a grievous disappointment to Col Cole He remarked after hearing the result that he would assume this to be an indication that the State is not ready for the redistribution of money by donation as while willing to do their part men of means throughout the State must be met half wee by the State itself for the present in of the work It is generally admitted that Senator Brgwell's minority report with its exposition of the resources and liabilities of the State frightened off members who would have gladly supported so philanthropic a measure under more favorable showing of the State'slinances This Legislature has shown on the whole a generous disposition having appropriated during the past week t185000 for the care of the insane which is to cover -the expense of erecting two itistitutions located respectively in the eastern and western portions of the State As the American reporter stood lean-leg against a fly in the wing of the Masonic Theater Saturday bight Mr Beecher rolled by and entered the room immediately behind the proscenium box to the left of the audience Having divested himself of a large felt bat and an overcoat of proportionate dimensions he then came out and joined the little group standing in the wings "What time is it?" he asked It wanted ten minutes of eight "There I knew it they haven't come yet" And as "they" hadn't come yet the reporter invited the distinguished visitor to a chat and met a ready response for Mr Beecher is a talker by nature and by habit "Are you really making a final tour sir" the reporter asked "Yes sir this tour shall be my last I have served out my time and shall now take my rest" He expressed no sense of fatigue however from his travel over the long distances common at the South Upon political topics the reverend that Ten nmeee appeared to have gotten President Cleveland's attention and was evidently going to get a full share of good things 'Now" said Mr Beecher' If I were President (and that event is imminent) I should know no geographical or even State division in the civil rervice Where-ever I found a man fit for a place I'd put him in it Why sir New Ragland is used to being snubbed by the Govern ment and I wonder at this growling from the West and South" However Mr Cleveland" continued Mr echer "has the confidence of the people of New York and we shall acquiesce in whaler he does in this matter of Southern appointments I think it is about time the good men of the South were beingtaken up I really believe the ground I breaking for a Southern Presidentialcandidate next race" "Do you think of any name in this connection?" "No I do not unless it were Bayard who though not strictly a Southern man represents your finer Southern sentiment in its essential aspects" "Times have changed -since you used to oome is in regard to yourself Mr Beecher" the reporter suggested "Yee they have Why I used to be thought a mor ster by the Southern people I know that Bat" and the venerable prelate glanced round the little company before finishing the sentence With a sweep of the arm "that's all changed now In a little whil believe we shall not know and -ewe lees which part of the country any man comes from What time is it now?" season in Nashville will be formally opened with what premises to be a great game between the Indianapolis Club and the local Americans The result is In doubt though of course the chances are greatly in favor of the visitors who are players of greater reputation and who have already hal some very fine Practice It will prove however to be a great drawing card for future games If the home team either wins or plays a close and credttable game Everything at the park though by no means corn plete will be le fair condition for tbe sport The progress of the work as been to seriously interrupted by the rains and cold weatuer that many visitors may to-day be somewhat disappointed In the course of the next ten days at latest the grand stand and all will be in such a state of completeness that the people of Nashville wilt be able to congratulate themselves upon having one of the best base-ball parks in America THE TWO TEAMS The following are the two teams that will to-day meet for the first time in the new base-ball park: INDIANAPOLIS POSITION AMERICANS McGuldre Catcher Hellman Miller Pitcher Mcquery First Base Bryan Crane Second Base McKean mnelly Rase Diestel Collins Short Stop Werrick Morriarity Lett Field Rhue Thompson Cener Field Hillery Footman Right Field Bowden GENERAL $011111 It was estimated that fully 5000 people visited the new base-ball park yesterday to see what progress bad been made This can reasonably be taken as a test of the interest of the public in the sport and augurs well a large attendance at today's game Cullen' the new catcher of the Americans did not arrive Saturday as was ex peered but will reach the city to-day it was intended that he play in center field but Hillery has been assigned to that position The cause of Cullen's delay was an accident with which he met at Philadelphia Mr Foster Cheatham has been appointed official scorer of the American Base-ball Club His work during last season gave very general sat sfaction and his appointment will meet with great favor from the players The name of Wm Phinney of the old Nashvilles was yetterday suggested by more than one party as a proper man to select to umpire the game to-day Phinney is himself a ball player of considerable experience and merit is thoroughly pcsted on the rules of the game and would undoubtedly render his decisions In an impartial manner The -new uniforms of the Americans arrived yesterday and the players will elm up to their best advantage to-day The uniforms on the field will look very much like those worn by the suits with red trimmings The uniform' of the locals will have the name across the breast plate in black letters The Americans have had only five days at practice owing to bad weather but will do their best to-day to entertain their opponents from the Hoosier State Thompson the giant who knocks the covers oft of ball arrived yesterday morning with the Indianapolis club It is mid by parties on the 'cede that he brought his home run bat along with him The price of admission to the game this afternoon will be 25 cents to any part of the amphitheater From the great amount of interest man-treated there will be an Immense crowd to cheer on the locals in their first efforts of the season Voss and Hellman will be the battery for the Americans to-day and Miller and McGuire the battery for the visitors Miller has the reputation of being the swiftest pitcher in the United States One of the great features of the playing of the Indianapolis club is their extraordinary base running Collins their field captain ranks first in this and has a record tot running 100 yards in 104 seconds Manager Watkins of the Indianapolis club says the reason the Atlantas beat his club by the score of 4 to 3 was that the Atlanta nine was aided by the city police force and the umpire He says that the Atlantan are the greatest kickers and grumblers be ever saw and that he would not play them another game tot 3300 The saki person also said that the new ball park when completed would be as fine and good in every respect as the famous Lucas Park in Si Lotijs to which se much praise has been given The Operatic Season This week commencing to-night the Nashville public will be favored by the "Nashville Amateur Operatic Club" with two of Gilberts 'Sullivan famons 'Pinafore" and "Iolanthe The announcement is sufficient to guarantee crowded houses We reproduce below a notice given by the American upon the presentation by the club of "Iolanthe" in May lut and it la safe to say that this operVon this occasion will be equally as well rendered as it was spring: Probably the most successful entertainment artisfically and financially ever given by Nashville people wu the production of Gilbert opera "Iolanthe" at the Masonic Theater last night The audience was large and fashionable completely filling the auditorium A few may have come to criticise the work of amateurs but after the first scene or two all were entirely en rapport with the effol to of the performers A fi Wig intro uction to the pleasure to follow was the overture by the orchestra Nashville audiences have had rare Opportunities to enjoy this most important feature of operatic performances and it was a surprise to many to find the instruments in such capable hands The baton was under the direction of Prof Biller of this city A round of applause at the close attested the delight of the audience at the admirable manner in which the overture was executed The charming duet between Strephon and Phyllis strengthened the agreeable impression thus made and from this on the most critical had little opportunity to exercise their peculiar functions An especially strong feature was the choruses That at the close of the first act was given with a vim that one would hardly expect in a company of amateurs The siancing and lively music of the concluding chorus had all the grace and strength of professional performers Another chorus that attracted particular attention and commendation was tnat of the peers as they made their initial entry In the decalogue some little hesitation to speak out might be noticed but that was to be expected on a first performance and really detracted very little from the general merit ot the enkrtainment As far as the musical features aro considered there would be no unfavomble corn parison with any operatic production Nashville has witnessed for many a season The costumes were new pleasing and appropriate Those of the leading performers had an unusnal richness The toilettes of lolan the the Queen and Phyllis were charming illustrations of the millinery art htrephon the peers and the Lord Chancellor all were handsomely attired Ova Jerse) New now offer to the trade an entirely new fabric our jersey silks We have them in
