route home from a Sonthern tour Business on the Nashville Chattanocga has decreaeed within the past week Ten conductors and thirty brakemen have been discharged The four divisions of the Louisville Nashville Road which are under the supervision of Maj Geddes are doing a fine business In January the increase in receipts of the Evansville Henderson Nashville Division was $35 000 cver Jannary 1884 The report for February will not be made out for reversl days buttit is known that the receipts are larger than the corresponding period of last year The freightage is heavier all along the line A tremendous volume of hay is being received in this section which is accounted for by the fact of a decreased wheat and clover crop Illinois is supplying the deficiency in both crops caused by the severe winter season here The volume of cotton in transportation Is much smaller than it was several months since Along the Decatur Di vision at one time it was necessary to handle that article with special trains THE UNION PACIFIC REPORT BOSTON March 24 summary of the operations of the Union Pacific Railroad for the year 1884 has been made public preliminary to the annual meeting tomorrow It le as follows: For the last six months the earaings excluding the St Joseph Western Railroad were $14738000 expenses $6807009 taxes $549000 the surplus earnings for the entire system for the lest six months of 1884 were $7381000 other receipts from miscellaneous sources make the total income for the six months of the year $38 9000 expenditure for last six months $3 795000 Of this amount $2674000 wee paid for interest on the bonds The total surpluspf the last six months of the year were $4 096000 From this is deducted $750 000 for United States requirements leaving a net surplus for the last six months of $3316000 as against 's of $383000 for the first six months of the year The'report says it la necessary to bear in mind that the various measures of economy wh'ch have been matured and entered upon during the first half of the year did not produce their effect until the second half Before the close of the first half also the work of construction then going on had been practically brought to a close The better financial results of the last six months were largely due to the causes which were originated in the first six months but which developed later Thetotal earnings for the year excluding the St Joseph Western and the income from- investments were $26205000 In 1883 the earnings were $29341000 The surplus Income for 1884 was $2662000 for 1883 $5516000 During the last year the floating debt of the company has been decreased to $3 237000 Daring the past year there have been expdhees and loss in receipts not likely to occur again The increase in taxes was $245753 owing to the new law in Nebraska Tolls due from the St Joseph Westrrn Road to the St Joseph Bridge Bui3ding Company have not been paid These tolls amounting to $101 865 are properly receipts of the system and will soon be paid The accumulated deficiencies open accounts and disputed credits since the consolidation in 1880 have been changed off against the surplus income of 1884 which has suffered to meet them after paying a dividend of IX per cent and yet leave a balance of $1 033444 equal to 1 7-10 per cent on the company's capital stock the total outstanding funded debt of the cornpanywhich does not include the funded debts The auxiliary dependent or ganizations in which the company is interested amounted Dec 31 1884 to 884173285 as compared with $84506- 332 Deo 81 the previous year showing a decrease for the year of $333047 The net reduction tci the entire debt funded and floating during the year is $578000 The land sales of the corammy after deducting the sales cancelled were 4321 042 acres for the Union Pacific proper which realized $6517773 for the Kansas Pacific 452266 acres amount realized $1197875 22 MARKET An Attempted Assassination Yesterday evening shortly after dark while
