no dispoeition on the part of owners to sacrifice for as soon as the spring opens many handsome Improve-mania will he made and a general up looking in the real relate bushiest is an ticipated" "How does the bridge matter affect property over the river!" text queried the reporter "'We have considerable property on the east side but the condition of the bridge does not in the least change its their possessions and await results The city authorities however could add materially to the comfort of those who are forced to cross the bridge during all kinds of weather by a few inexpensive improvements in the way of dry cross Inge etc For instance right at the east end of the bridge where passengers alight from the cars in rainy weather is very muddy the water lodges at the foot of the PARKER ruts peeted Death of the Distinguished Divine in New Orleans Late Thursday night a telegram was received by Bishop Mayeire of this city announcing to him the death in New Orleans of Bishop Limn Patker of the Methodist Episcopal Church South The unexpected event cast a gloom over the Christians and especially the Methodists of the entire city A brief sketch of the life of the distinguished divine is given He was a native of Rome Oneida County New York and was born April 23 1829 His early education was due to his own determination to acquire knowledge It is said of him that while engaged as a clerk in a dry goods store he supplemented a meagre education jpy rising in the mornings at 4 o'clock to study Latin and Greek before entering upon the reg ular duties of the day He moved to New Orleans in 1845 and there joined the Methodist Church two years later He settled upon law as a profeesion but while engaged in a study of it felt that his proper call was to the ministry of the gospel He was licensed to preach in 1849 He was during the succeeding nine years in charge of various churches in the city of New Orleans and was subsequently Presiding Elder of the New Orleans circuit for nine years excepting two years when he was stationed at the Louisiana Avenue Church In 1870 he succeeded Bishop Keener as editor of the New Orleans Christian Advocate and has since held that position On the 19 day of May 1882 at the Geoeral Conference of his church in this city he was on the second ballot elected a Bishop and has since graced that position of prominence and re epoiosibility The deceased married Miss Ellen Burros at some time in 800 and leaves a wife and three sons The following was published concerning him by Harper's Weekly shortly after his election to the Episcopacy: As a writer be is clear smooth and forcible as a preacher he is elegant and profound and remarkable for bringing out the bidden meaning of difficult texts he is regarded in the front rank of preachers in the South By his culture and scholarly attainments deep piety sound judgment modest demeanor meekness of spirit amiability and simplicity of manners he has won great popularity among people and preachers He is regarded eminently fitted to fill any 'position In the gift of the church A man of fine presence tall and 'argentine well filled without being unduly stout rather tawny skinned with
