located at Nashville Tenn Haight wm diecovered to have gone extensively Into the rooliug bodiless in Nashville and be watt always kept under a close itch About five weeks ago a daughter and son of Mrs Berry of St louts came to Chloatro and identified Weaver as one of the men who had two a roomer at their house The detectivel then decided that they would not moirAt Weaver but await the Muni of Witi tel Investiotion about this time ellowed that ()scar Cook formerly residing at Leavenworth a close friend of NVitrok's hid gone to Kamm City where he was found to be workiug as a cooper in the East bottoms and living at a boanling house kept by a woman named Coke The story was current that Cook had won a large amount of money in a lottery but this idea was very soon exploded It was discovered that Cook had made sevend trips away firm the city and his Journeys were always followed by the appearance of one of the JIM on motel's LErreas A Pinkerton endive finally beceme a bosom friend of Cook's visiting gambling house with Cook and continued to shadow him until his arrest laid Saturday In the mmntline the shadow on Witrock was maintained without result until last Tuesday night On that night the Pinkerton men found another shadow whom they did not know They saw him enter No 10 Lincoln street the reeidence of Witrock and afterward a large man who correeponds to the description of Witrock also entered the house In the meantime the brother-in-law had gone to Quincy where he received a telegram announcing the return of Fred Witrock to Chicago A Pinkertou operative had followed Kinney and managed to see these telegrams which were signed by Rose Witrock the wife of the mu the detectives were seeking The Pinkerton office In Chicago was warned and it only tended to confirm their own suspicions Witrock's house was closely shadowed until Friday morning and it WOJI feared that Witrock bad escaped In the meantime Kinney returned to Chicago and he and Weaver were seen to can-homily enter the Witrock boom the blinds of which were constantly drawn although lights could be seen inside On Friday morning THE MYSTERIOUS SHADOW came out of the Witrock house as did also Kinney and after making a careful survey Witrock appeared The men went south on Lincoln street showing evident alarm all the while and finally entered a liquor store and restaurant kept by an Italian in Madison street near Lincoln Robert A Pinkerton and two operatives shadowed the place until Kinney went out when they entered and arrested Witrock after a sharp struggle The latter attempted to draw a revolver two Of which were found on his person He protested against the indignity but was searched and $110 was taken from a red pocket-book found on his person The "shadow" was searched and $4500 was found on his person The "shadow" turned out to be a young man named George Burnham whom Witrock had met in Savannah tie He explained that be bad come North with Witrock and had shadowed the latter's house as Witrock bad explained that he bad shot a man in Chicago in a row and wished to escape arrest He was afterward released when he had explained to the satisfaction of the detectives that he had no knowledge of or connection with the robbery When Kinney reappeared he was searched and $1000 in loose money was found on his person while In A BELT AROUND HIS WAIN' wm found $4000 additional Thee mem were ironed and taken to Pinkerton Agency in a close carriage A search of the Wit-rock house resulted in finding a skirt on Mrs Witrock into which $19u0 was sewed in $50 A bunch of money $450 in all was found on her person together with a four carat diamond Weaver was arrested in the coal-yard about the same time and in the basement of his house was found $8000 in some fruit Jars The arrest of Cook and Haight was then ordered by telegraph The deteetives state that Cook distributed the money after the robbery and was the go-between They charge Haight with outlining the robbery and also aiding in the forging of the letter presented to Fotheringham Witrock appears to have been the only man on the train concerned in the robbery unless Fotheringham was an accomplice Wit-rock after the robbery it is declared Joined Cook at the East bottoms in Kansas City and was hidden by him until he went South Witrock it is claimed never before was known to have been engaged in any criminal enterprise He was employed as a book-keeper for -six years at Kansas City The detectives decline to state what they know if anything about the career of the wife of Witrock She has disappeared but while she is not under arreet is under close surveillance The Pinkerton Agency still do-dines to state where Witrock Kinney or Weaver are incarcerated but it is pretty well known that they are still in Chicago They state that their instructions from Ili express company were to pursue the thieves without regard to expense or hope of recovering any of the money They will not give any expression of their views as to the guilt or innocence of Fotheringham NOTHTNO NEW IN NASHVILLE There are no new developments in this city that tend to prove either the guilt or innocence of the man Haight who was arrested Christmas evening His wile and child are still in the city Both keep themselves quietly in their rooms The former refuses absolutely to be interviewed and appears to be much overcome with grief The facts in the above telegram give Haight's movements prior and subsequent to the great robbery The indications are as stated in TitE AMERICAN of yesterday that he was one of the originators of the scheme and with "Cummings" or Wit-rock the principal mover The account of his arrest as accurately detailed in Tux AMERICAN created quite a sensation SAN FRANCISci Dec this morning Louis San Francisco Road on the night of iict 5 of $55000 to $60000 were related for the first time by officials of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency to-night to a rtip resentative of the Associated Press The agency has succeeded lu arrested five men named Frederick Witrock who is the author of the "Jim Cummings" letters and who is claimed to be the man who perpetrated the robbery Haight an ex-employe of the express oompauy who is supposed to have aided in planning the robbery from his knowledge of the railroad "run" Thomas Weaver a Chfcago laundryman who was with Witrock before anti after the robbery Edward Kinney a brother-in-law of Witrock upon whose person was found a conaidemele portion of the express money and Oscar Cook who was with Wit-rock after the robbery and afterward divided the money and mailed the "Jim Cummings" letters The detectives have recovered about 116000 and estimate that from 810000 to $45000 is MIX UNACCOUNTED FOIL The story of the chase has all the dash of a romance about it and certain features of It would be regarded as improbable in a work of fiction The express car on the St Louis San Francisco Road was rifled on the night of Oct 25 and the express messenger David Fotheringbana when discovered by the train hands was found bound and gagged in the car He explained that he had admitted a man into the car who presented a letter from John Barrett route agent of the express company the letter explaining that the man was to be employed by the company and was to be given an opportunity to learn the business Fotheringham related that while on the run the stranger presented a revolver BOUND AND GAGOED HIM and then carried off all the money in the safe The robbery occurred at Pacific Junction about thirty-six miles from St Louis The Pinkerton agency sent operatives in all directions and the wagon roads running from Pacific Junction toward the Missouri River were traversed but only a meagre trace was found of any one and the officials when they returned to St Louis were completely at sea In the meantime a letter was addressed by "Jim Cuminings" to the Globe-Democrat of St Louis based on which the Pinkertons claim to have compassed the arrest and fixed the crime of all the participants In the meantime the detectives obtained the names of all pawns discharged or who voluntarily left the employ of the express company during the preceding year and found among the former Haight who had been discharged nine months previous for suspected theft of packages This man had been a messenger on the road from St Louis to Vinita Indian Territory covering the same run which was made by Fotheringbam The detectives found that be and Fotheringham had known each other in Kansas City but there had been no intimacy Haight was traced to Kansas City and FROM THRRE TO LEAVENWORTH where his father was an inmate of the HOMO for Disabled Soldiers From Leavenworth it was found that Haight had come to Chloagd where he had been employed as an express driver and alsoworked for Fred Witrock the mysterious "Jim Cummings" who was operating a coal yard at the corner of Lincoln and West Lake streets Haight left the city on Oct 27 two days after the robbery stating that he was going to Florida and his wife followed him some days later They had been very poor but showed evidences of sudden affluence immediately after the robbery The investigation by the detectives in Chicago showed that Witroce had also come from Leavenworth and as he was absent from the city he could not be questioned concerning Haight When inquiry was pursued respecting Witrock it was found that he corresponded very closely to the description given of the mysterious Cummings" Further cautious inquiries showed that Witrock had left the city on Oct 12 with Tom Weaver the laundry man whose place of business is at No 733 West Lake street and within a few doors of Witrock's coal yard It was also learned that the men had taken with them two valises -A SHOT-GUN AND A MUSKRT and explained that they were going to Arkansas to hunt Weaver it was ascertained bad returned to Chicago on Oct 22 Some of the handwriting of Witrock was obtained and submitted to the man who was passing judgment on the letter addressed to the Globe-Democrat The detectivee state that this letter which was written to exculpate Fotheringham professed to tell the facts leading up to the robberyand what had occurred after the robbery Id this "Jim Cummings" explained that he left a package in the Union Depot at St Louie which would show that he had a number of the letter-heads of the express company and in this letter the writer said that he had gone to the Missouri River to a point opposite Labadie and took a skiff below St Chattel and floated down the river Detectives were sent to St Charles and found that two men answering the description of Witrock and Weaver had bought a skiff and provisions and had gone up the river on Oct 14 instead of down the river The skiff was afterwards found in a gully partly covered with sand Roiling to-day received an order for 650 tons of anglo bars to he used In the 0011Structionef new Southern railroads The
