f Page 10 Tornado Forecasting Improvements Expected to Forestall Muth Damage By FRANK CARET AP Science Reporter Seven tornadoes ripping through parts of five states causing record destruction of property and loss of human life Victims struck down almost without warning A death toll of 689 in Missouri Illinois and Indiana alone Other dead in Kentucky and Tennessee raising the fatality list - to 790 with 3033 injured and almost 18 million dollars damage in the five states ' All this on a March day 30 years ago Could such wholesale death and destruction hit without warning today? Possibly say the weathermen but not likely 45 Minutes Notice Chances are that improvements In tornado forecasting and tracking would save many lives and forestall much damage The warning system is still far from perfect Scientists of the U S Weather Bureau say the best notice that can be given to pinpoint a specific city or town is about 45 minutes - But advances in meteorology have made it possible generally to alert an area of between 8000 and 10000 square miles two to three hours in advance as to the probability of tornadoes Narrow Margin - "'Mat still may sound like a very broad area in which to get people alerted and excited without being able to say exactly where a tornado might strike" meteorologist Theodore Gleiter said in an interview "But as recently as 1952 we were alerting in terms of a 20000 square mile area—so that in two years Pre-Season Sale Sno-Breeze Coolers 4000 CFM $1150 3000 CM 4140 1500 CFM $80 Includes water pump end window adopter PONCA SHEET METAL CO 214 West Grand 1 NOW the smallest lightest hearing aid in Zenith's history! - The new tubeless 3 SUCH CONVENIENCE' SUCH CLARITY! ' Key Workers - In the defensive war against tornadoes the key workers are still the meteorologists of the Weather Bureau and the armed forces who plot tornado probabilities on the basis of atmospheric conditions And they say while radar and other devices are valuable tools major reliance must still be placed on the eyes and legwork of thousands of volunteer spotters - They pay tribute to newspapers radio and television in giving the public quick information A case history in point is supplied by the Associated Press' Oklahoma City Bureau Last May 1 a tornado hit Meekey Okla and in spite of considerable destruction no one was killed An AP reporter on the scene asked one woman if she had any explanation "I sure do" she said "We were all watching the television weatherman Harry Volkman He said tornadoes might be expected in this area God bless Harry Volkman" Factors Listed - Factors on which these expectations are based include: - 1 A more extensive network of volunteer tornado spotters - 2 Institution of the first co-ordinated Weather Bureau network -of radar stations specifically designed for severe storm spotting and tracking -3 A new - electronics detection system -which in effect "tunes in" on lightning from tornadoes and other major storms thus furthering the spotting and tracking process: The spotter network now extends for 75 miles around each of 170 Weather Bureau offices Spotters range from filling station attendant to Civil Defense plane spotters who double up on the job -
