Realty Co 2M Onto St tottll -Plans for a flood control project for Nashville which if constructed would cost many millions of dollars and bring up to date flood control and navigation project surveys for the entire Cumberland River basin bave been announced by Ma Bernard Smith United States District Engineer The plans for the Nashville flood control project are expected to be completed within six weeks Major Smith stated when they will be turned over to the United 8tates Division Engineer at Cincinnati before going to the chief of engineers of the War Department at Washington The engineer declined to state the probable costs of the local project because he said We dont like to deal in exact figures until a project has been surveyed and approved" Ha did explain however that no appropriation was available for tbs local project and that it would require approval by the War Department and an appropriation by Congress before any work could be started Also a necessary part of ths proposed project would be the requirement that the City of Nashville agree to maintain the levees and guarantee to provide the rights-of-way Pumps necessary to carry sewage into the river when it reached high stage would be provided by the Federal Government Major Smiyi who has- conferred several times with Mayor Thomas Cummings as to the city's part in the project said that the Mayor and others interested in the project are conducting a survey of the low-lying areas to determine the possibilities of securing needed rights-of-way The Nashville RealEstate Board has already been asked to make a survey of the possible increase in property values along the riverfront subject to floods if a chain of protective levees were constructed The engineer's office recently began a survey to determine whether a series of five large new navigation dams between Canton Ky and Carthage Tenn would be justified by Increased river freight traffic and prospects of further increase The five dams were recommended in 1933 by CoL Besson former district engineer whenever river traffic justified the cost of construction They would replace the series of fourteen small dams now located on the Cumberland WPA May Cut 1670 Davidson County Jobs Approximately 1670 WPA Jobe may be cancelled in Davidson County around July because of completion of projects shortage of sponsors funds and to eliminate overmanning" according to Harry Berry 8tatc WPA Administra-tor' 11 After July I my policy will be to allocate jobs where local communities are ready and willing to supply the projects" Berry said "The demands for jobs generally over the 8tate will exceed the supply' He pointed out that the county was already 600 short of supplying the 4200 jobs required -for-its quota Colonel Berry said there was in prospect the President got the WPA appropriation for which he had asked Congress a 29 per cent reduction of relief rolls This would eliminate about 900 of Davidson County's surplus jobs he said He listed the projects that may be cut and the reasons for discontinuance as follows: 700 persons now working on the park system may be cut off the rolls because of a lack of park board funds 150 off at the airport when a hangar is completed 200 women on sewing projects may be cut off because the State refuses to continue to furnish materials seventy will be dropped from the rolls upon the completion of Marrowbone Dam miscellaneous projects to expire in the next sixty days 300 men and women- the correction of overmanning" on the county farm-to-market road program a reduction of 250 workers The State Administrator announced that Mrs Elisabeth Cop-pedge director of the womens division of WPA has resigned effective July Mrs Coppedge has done an excellent Job and we are very sorry
