111 10A SATURDAY JULY 21977 SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CITY LA SHREVEPORT JOURNAL Kainer Discovered SWC Title Was No Cinch By El) ENGLISH Journal Sports Writer College baseball doesn't get the publicity major league baseball does Otherwise you'd hear the 1977 Longhorns mentioned in the same breath with the 1951 Dodgers or the 1964 Phillies Texas opened the season with an NCAA-record 34 straight wins and yet failed to get one of the two Southwest Conference bids to the national tournament No matter if you're playing Charo in Monopoly it's hard to win at anything 34 straight times Conversely for the Longhorns it had been hard to avoid the NCAA Texas had won the SWC 12 straight years good for 12 straight bids to the tournament Texas unseated the defending Longhorns for the first place bid and Baylor won the SWC post season tournament for the at-large bid Just what went wrong is open for discussion Kainer who was the nation's winningest pitcher at 15-2 has his own version "We had all our breaks early in the season" he said "We won a bunch of games 2-1 and 1-0 We would come back and score a couple of runs with two outs we did that several times "During conference we couldn't get any breaks We used them all early in the season" After the 34-0 start Texas leveled off to 59-10 for the season Kamer also said it boiled down to the fact Texas just didn't have the hitters and pitchers to go aU the way this year rah almost making him fighting mad A lot of the players got on batting practice pitcher Clyde Wright who had Just been cut No trouble erupted but the Rangers unanimously wanted to cease exhibitions with the Horns Now college baseball is behind 'cattier Ahead of him lies a task few people face Most minor league pitchers need to master just one more pitch to go with their meat and potatoes pitch to make the big leagues At some time during his career Milner has had three different meat and potato pitches In high school he had three pitches all of them curve balls He threw a sidearm curve a three-quarters curve and an overhand curve Ile continued this style through his freshman year at UT Then he lost his curve His sophomore year he switched over to sliders and threw his new pitch over 50 per cent of the time One year later this changed again Kainer couldn't get his slider over and didn't know what to throw His curve wasn't the same and he didn't have any confidence in his fastball Texas coach Cliff Gustafson then clocked his fastball at 92 miles per hour For the third time in three years he changed his style At the time he signed with the Rangers he was still a fastball and curve pitcher What combination he will use and where he goes from here is not known What is known is that he'll never forget blowing something big Ask the '51 Dodgers or the '64 Phi files In 1975 when Texas won the NCAA only one starter hit under 300 Tulsa shortstop Blair Stouffer and Rick Bradley Lafayette's catcher last year were among that lineup of sluggers This year Texas' lineup only had three 300 hitters Texas pitching also left something to be desired Starters Bob lieuck and Kern Wright went out with arm problems Kainer and Tony Briuolara second-round pick of the Atlanta Braves had to shoulder the whole load in the SWC tournament Brizzolara threw 238 pitches in four days more than anybody but batting practice pitchers throw Kainer has been with Tulsa a Texas Ranger affiliate for 10 days Kainer had one previous contact with club before signing away his senior year at UT This past spring the Rangers played an exhibition game with the Horns before 7000 in Auslin's Disch-Falk Field The Longhorns lost the game 9-5 and almost lost their heads in the process The Horns razzed the big leaguers and it didn't sit too well "We talked to Tommy Boggs (the Rangers' pitcher that day before the game" Kainer recalled "He said if our players kept mouthing off some of the veterans like Gaylord Perry him to knock us down "He said 'yall keep it down cause I sure don't want to knock anybody down" One of the Horns' seniors had popped off to Toby Jar Somewhere along the line everybody has blown something I Maybe you ate onion rings before interviewing for a cinch job Maybe you started horsing around and lost to your girl friend in putt-putt Maybe you told the wrong disc jockey the right jackpot If so you can identify with Donald Kainer Friday night the 21-year-old Kainer playing for the Tulsa Drillers pitched a complete-game shutout as his team blanked the Shreveport Captains 11-0 at SPAR Stadium Stadium The tall 'ArsA lean 200 pounder didn't strike out anyone but 21 of I the 77 outs came after ground balls This was Kainer's first i professional appearance I since being drafted out of the University of Texas in June 1-1i Texas as you might know Donald Kainer pulled the biggest gag job since the Boston strangler hung 'em up Records Bettered By McCoy Damon McCoy (left and below) of the City of Shreveport Swim Teams (COSST) set three Southern Wind Rules Agent SaysToreman Won't compromise In Tourney 11 4 'rkt 4Or I 41 dous affection for his teammates he has been incredibly offended by the club's rationale" "If's after the fact now if they haven't seen fit to rectify an obvious imbalance in his income based On his production" said Reich "As a result Foreman has taken his position" Lynn is just as adamant about not trading Foreman who has been the heart of the Vikings offense the past four years "We've had many inquiries but we're not interested in discussing with any club the possibility of trading Chuck" said Lynn "We've been very consistent on this matter in our talks with Chuck and the other teams" Reich said Foreman would not return to the Vikings under any circumstance "An impasse was reached about six months ago and it has only deteriorated since then" said Reich "Chuck has reached the point where an economic settlement won't resolve the matter" Reich said Foreman is considering business involvements with recreational products and physical fitness programs in addition to television as alternatives to football "Unfortunately Lynn's greatest miscalculation has been his thinking Foreman will be there when the other guys report" explained Reich "Although Chuck has nothing but respect for Bud Grant and tremen four years could not be reached for comment Reich said he believed Foreman was headed for his parents' home in Maryland "It's not a question of Chuck sitting out one year" said Minnesota General Manager Mike Lynn "It's a matter of three years" Foreman who has been trying to renegotiate his present contract for the last 18 months is committed contractually to the Vikings through the 1979 season "He's got more than one alter a tive continued can play for the contract which he signed or the contract which was offered to him which is a two-year extension of his present contract with an option year" MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The agent for Chuck Foreman says his client would rather accept a lesser-paying career outside of football than compromise his principles and return to the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League The agent Pittsburgh attorney Tom Reich said Friday night that Foreman is comfortable with the realization he may not play again "Television is a major option" said Reich "Without a question Chuck is willing to sacrifice money for principle" continued Reich "If your principles have any value you'd better be willing to pay for that value" Foreman who has rushed for 3802 yards and caught 218 passes for 2206 yards and scored 57 touchdowns in Chuck Foreman has his principles MILWAUKEE (AP) The leader board told a half-truth Accurately enough it showed a four-way first place deadlock Gary McCord Fuzzy Zoeller Mike Morley and rookie Keith Fergus all shot three-under-par 69s Friday and were one stroke ahead of Mac McLendon Ed Sabo and Barney Thompson going into today's second round of the $130000 Greater Milwaukee Open Golf Tournament But what the board didn't reflect were vicious crosswinds which gusted to 37 mph much of the day and turned the 7010-yard Tuckaway Country Club course normally a touring pro's delight into a nightmare Each of the day's top seven finishers except McLendon played their rounds in the afternoon during which the southwest gales gradually shifted to the northwest and tapered to 27 mAh "The weather was extremely difficult This was more of a guessing game than a golf game" said Zoeller who at 29th on the tour's current earnings list is one of the top names in the 156-man field Most of the bigger names have skipped this tournament to prepare for next week's British Open Two-time Milwaukee winner Dave Stockton and 1971 champ Dave Eichelberger were at 71 along with Dave Lundstrom Stanton Lee and Frank
