Com. Respectfully, 1 v5nl-6m SHAFER KLIOs West iSiile Square, CAN Maise. Honesty is the best policy. Such was the soli-loqur of tbe thief a he started from his neighbors shecpfold with his neighbors prd perty on his back. He jkept on repeating it until the enormity of his crime occurred to him, and he actually put down the stolen property and went home an honest man.

But not so with the late Governor Garcelon and his late co conspira tors in the State of 54 1 At the State -election on the 8th of September, 1879, there were three candidates voted for for Governor--Davis, the Republican, received 68.000 votes; Smith, the Greenback ir. Garcelon, Democrat, 21, 000. That is, in round numbers. Davis, the Republican, lacked a ft. hundred of having he majority of all the votes cast.

Under tbe laws of Maine there was no election, notwithstanding the Republican had 21.000 more votes than the Green-backer, and 46,500 more than the Demociat, consequently the rlectioh of State officers mu3t be made by the Legislature. -The Legislature of Maine con-ists of thirty-one Senators and one hundred and fifty-one Representatives. Of the thirty -one Senator the Republicans elected twenty, and the Green backers and Democrats elected eleven. Of the Housej of Representatives the Re publicans elected ninety, and the Democrats and- Green backers elected sixty-one, giving the Reuubli-cans nine majority in the Senate and twenty nine ia the House. This was conceded by all the Democratic papers in the land us the verdict of the people in Maine as expressed at tne ballot box.

8 There the matter rested until the time arrived for the Governor and Council to canvass the vote, declare the result, and give certificates to the candidates elected by the people; but instead of giving ninety Republican Representatives and twenty. Republican Senators certificates of election, the Governor gave certificates to twenty Democrats and Greenbaekers and eleven certificates to Republicans, thus reducing the Republican Senators from twenty to eleven, and raising the Democrats and Gren backers from eleven to twenty. In the House they reduced the Republicans from ninety to sixty one, and raised the Greentiaekers from sixty one to seventy' eight, 'and declared twelve vacancies in the large Republican districts, thup giv ing a majority to the Democrats and Greenbackers in both Senate and House. The Governor deliberat ty' set aside the will of the people on the most flimsy pretexts. Tbe Republicans objected to this outrage, and proposed a set of questions to Governor Garcelon covering the disputed ground.

He would not submit them to the Supreme Court of the State of Maine to arbi trate the matter, but submitted a set of questions himself to the Court to decide. TlTe decision was against him, but be refused to abide by it. Later the Republican members declared elected bj' the returns met and organized a Senate and House, elected Davis, the Republican, Governor, submitted their case to the Supreme Court, and was again sustain- d. The Greenbackers and Democrats then proposed a set of questions to the Court, and was a third time de cided against. They then, for want of unity in their memliers, concluded to quit and go home, or at least so many of them as were not elected, but counted in by the Governor.

The eleven Senators elected tool their seats in the Davis Senate, and the sixty-one Representatives elected to the House took their seats, with the Davis House, and thus ends one of the mos shameful farces in American politics, with right and justice triumphant With honest money, a free ballot, and a lair count. Grant, Sherman or Blain will be elected and inaugurated Piesident of the United States to succeed R. B. Hayes in 1880. Editor. Pennsylvania leads off for Grant. As goes Union Maine, so goes tbe Indiana not a certain State by any means, but tbe chances are good for 5,000 Republican majority. Bro. Palmer, of tbe Ireland Argus, is despondent' because be cant see all 'over the county at once.

He should be content with telephones. Pennsylvania held her Republican State Convention esterdav and instructed tne delegates to tbe Nation al Convention to vote for Gen. U. b. Grant.

Of 2,113 interviews of Ohio Re publicans as to their choice for President, 1,216 were for Sherman, for Blaine, 318 for Grant, and 81 bad no chbice. The best business ansacted in tbe House during the week was the reception of a committee report against some thirty war claims. Of course, however, they will be re newed next session. On the 6th of April you will be called lipon to vote for or agai. st the Constitutional Amendments.

It these amendments are adopted the next general election will be held in November, instead of October, as heretofore. In this issue will be found an interesting report from Mr. Union Lethell, Auditor. Like Mr. Bethell, we think it wouldbe a good idea for all the Auditois to make similar reports, thus showing to the people how the business of the Auditor's office is conducted.

The appointment of Gil R. Stormont as Supervisor of the Census of this district, has been confirmed Mr. Stomont is editor of Prince ton Clarion, is a btalwait Republi can, and the right man for tbe office, No better appointment could have been made, unless it bad stiuckttiis office. A correspondent, from this place to tbe Evansville Courier says that The Standard is waging war on the new saloon soon to be opened on the North Side. This is a mistake.

We simply suggested that tbe saloon be named Hells Entrance, as an ap propriate name for all saloons. We do not object to one saloon raor than another. A few colored families recently moved into Hancock county, this State, which excited tbe indignation of some of the old Bourbous of that They proceeded to potifj the colored people to leave, burned some of the property they occupied, and cut the throat of a horse belonging to a gentleman who rented pro perty to a colored family. Elsewhere wilt be found the pro posed constitutional which are to be voted upon in April next. An impartial and careful ex animation of the same will convince every unprejudiced mind that they should.be by the voters of the State.

It will be the'suving thousands of 'dollars to the people, besides many' other benefits. We had Occasion, one day last week, to visit Princeton. We took dinner at the American House and supper at the. Gibson House. We advise our friends to patronize the Gibson House.

Ye do not feel very enthusiastic over Princeton hotels, and mildly suggest that Boonvillc hotels would be good patterns for tbe landlords of Princeton to go by. This is no puff. The debt statement fof the month of January presents even a better showing than was foreshadowed in the late dispatches. The reduction for the last month was over eleven millions. The figures show that, with reasonable avoidance of eitra-vagance in appropriations, the Secretary of the Treasury will doubtless be pble to effect A reduction of the debt during tbe year of about one hundred millions.

Senator Voorhees exodus committee have examined a few witnesses in regard to the importation of negro voters by the Republicans for political purposes. It wa's -ascertained that over eight hundred tickets had been sold by the Balti more Ohio Railroad, and ttt not quite two' hundred out of the lot were voters. That is a If the vote of Indiana is to be changed by the negroes, Unt it time somebody was taking. charge of the matter and bring none but vo ters F. HUTCHINSON.

1880. Editor Standard: Yon v. ill douhi less like to hear from tiii country so I though. I.woui 1 pm von a ftw lines to day, giving an account as best I can as to how things have been goiug heie since the 17th of December, 1879, the date of 1113- arrival here. At that time the weather was cold, freezing cold, all the time for ten day-p; ihen we had about two hours sleet followed by a general thaw, attended by about six da3-s fog; -then the wind blew off the fog and the sun broke in on us with the full blast of all its raye.

This, with the vvind dried up all the mud in short order, and the roads ate as good as in the sum mer time. With the exception of a tew those blow days which this country is subject we Lave had the finest weather in the world. Not a drop ot rain hi? fallen here since I came, the only tailing weather of any' kind being the sleet oken of. The people here are aoinginon their nerve considerably in the wav- of improvements. Many new farms are being opened tn.s pi ing, and our little town wili at the piesent rate double in size bv the 1st of June.

1880, to what it w-is in June 1879. All kinds of business is booming, and 11 a tew years. at the pres ent rate, Kansas wilt be ia a fine state of cultivation All the waste land that is now tying ojien to herd ers will send forth corn and wheat instead of prairie grass. Already Kansas is being noted as one of the best States io the Union; but give her live 3-ears re prosperity, aad then you will see by the statistics large gains over an3-thing she has reported yet, unless it fe grasshop pers. The repoit of 1874 will in all probability never be surpassed in the hopper line.

I will say that the people are gen erally healthy here, and there are all kinds from all places, many, in fact more, from Indiana than any other locality, in this county, while in other counties some other part of Che Union comes out ahead. On leaving Indiana last December I was requested b3 many to write to them, if I saw an opening for them. 1 will say to one and all of my friends in old Warrick, Kansas is not all glory. are the thing t.at men have to batvle with here, as is the case in all new countries; but men of good grit, who are willing to labor and wait patiently generally win here, while those who are to rich' in one or two years generaly get badly disappointed.
