B. \miIAMS 10 - Thurs., Jan. 23, 1964 Redlands Daily Facts IN HOLLYWOOD Brave comeback by stunt man By Erskine Johnson HOLLYWOOD — (NEA) — Behind the Screen: There never has been a comeback story quite like this one. Two years ago motion picture stunt man Bob Morgan was carried into a hospital in Phoenix. Ariz. He was unconscious—and! for that he was lucky. One of his legs was horribly mangled.! Doctors also found serious internal and head injuries. ! There had been a miscue in : a fight scene on a speeding 1 railroad flat car for the movie, "How the West Was Won." Morgan was hurled under the wheels of the car. He was picked up limp and seemingly lifeless, bloody and torn. The best predicted for him, if by a miracle he recovered, was permanent invalidism. His wife, Yvonne dc Carlo, came by plane from Hollywood to sign the necessary papers. The mangled leg was amputated, and Morgan remained unconscious for nearly a month. Recovery was slow and pain ful. The other day the story of his heroic comeback was told on the scoreboard in the Riveria Country Club's annual pro-amateur golf tournament. First under team honors were the names: "Bob Nichols—Bob Morgan." They had a low net best ball of 60. Morgan had shot an individual 73. As every golfer knows, the first rule of the game is to tee the ball up in line with your left heel. As the club goes back, the left knee bends and the left ankle is rolled toward the right foot, with the left heel coming slightly off the ground. Relcarning the game he loved was difficult at first. But Bob Morgan's courage is legendary. He made his comeback the hard way—on an artificial left leg. Short takes: Lana Turner's daughter, Cheryl Crane, says she will wed actor John Carlyle in Acapulco next month . Kathy Jurado offered Ernest Borgnine a quick Mexican divorce to pave the way for an early marriage to Ethel Merman. He says they will wait — until June. Are you ready for "Hercules, Samson and Ulysses," all in the same film? MGM will release the Italian-made muscle-bulgcr Film directing is so simple really, as Pietro Germi, the Italian, puts it in a documentary short subject, "The Direc tors." Says he: "My constant pre- occupation is to be clear — and above all not to bore anyone." Latest in the paperback book racks: "Jayne Mansfield's Wild, Wild World." Ugh! MGM "news" release, verbatim: "Bary Sullivan will be a bachelor in his MGM-TV 'Grand Hotel' series so that he can get involved without getting involved." . . . Edward G. Robinson and his bride, Elaine Conte, reconciled in New York . . . Tuesday Weld and "Billy Budd' star Terence Stamp have discovered each other ... Rex Harrison will play the Pope opposite Charlton Heston's Michelangelo in "The Agony and the Ecstacy." Classified Ads CLASSIFIED RATES Minimum 2 lines. (UPI) Tumbling tumbleweeds may- sound poetic when put to mus ic, but the troublesome desert pants were cause for war Tues day. Fifty men armed themselves with pitchforks and battled a wall of tumbleweeks that had surrounded a tract home de velopment, "trapping" about 100 families. Strong desert winds were blamed for uprooting the turn bleweeds that swirled across the countryside and lodged against homes and garages at the Desert View Highlands tract on the west side of town It was expected to take a couple of days to clean up the mess caused by the tumbleweeds that stacked up against front doors, blocked driveways and became entwined in the tops of trees. Firemen loaded the weeds in' to trucks, hauled them into the desert and set fire to them. Muney to Loan. Money Wanted Mortgages - Trust Deeds Business Opportunities ....
