Volunteers protect city form fiery devastation PASADENA (AP) Pasadena is nestled in a huge petrochemical industrial complex with only a 160-member club standing between it and a possible fiery devastation. But the city's residents sleep each night with full confidence the nation's largest single-city volunteer fire department can handle the job. "I guess you could call this a hobby with professional status," said Jay Goyer, chief of the Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department. "No one gets paid. We all hold other jobs and participate with the fire department in our off time." Goyer says he spends more time as head of the fire department than he does at his regular job as fire safety director a GATX Corp.

"I take all my free time and spare time and devote it to the fire department, and I've done this for 19 years," Goyer said. "And I'm definitely not unique," he said. "It's a bunch of civic-minded men and families that makes this thing work." Goyer put a heavy emphasis on the involvement and understanding required of the volunteers' families. "It's harder on the women and children of the volunteers than it is on the volunteers themselves," he said. "It takes a lot of time away from home, and a lot of women can't stand the heat that comes from the situation." There apparently are a lot who can, since the department has very little turnover and a waiting list to join.

"About the only time we lose a man out of the department is when his job transfers him out of town," the chief said. "They very seldom just get up and get out." There is an eight-week training course for new applicants twice a year, and 24 are waiting for the upcoming class. "If all 24 still have the desire to join after eight weeks, there may be the possibility that we'll accept four of them," Goyer said. A volunteer fire depart- ment can work in Pasadena because most of the men are employed at area plants as shift workers, he said. "We're an industrial complex working 24 hours a day," the fire chief said.

"At any time of the day or night, I can put 35 men on any fire scene. The men are either on their days off or they're working different shifts. It just hits a natural balance." But why do men want to sacrifice their sleep and free time for such a dangerous "hobby?" "I ask myself that question a lot," Goyer said, "especially when I come dragging home about 2:30 in the morning and lay down for what I know is going to be about two hours. "The volunteers are a breed of men that gets some type of payback within themselves just to go about their business and know they helped somebody that needed it," Goyer said. "They want it to work, so they make it work," he said.

"A man's his own man in this thing." She was also selected Miss Photogenic by the Huntsville media. One talk with Judy Barbour and there are no questions why she was salutatorian of her high school class at Wharton and an student at the University of Houston.

But to see the5-feet-4-inch, 110-pound beauty doesn't tip you to the fact that she has her commercial pilot's license, is a better-than- average shot with a rifle, a get-your-limit fisherperson, and recently wrote a cookbook on how to prepare wild game such as elk, deer, dove, quail, duck, and such. The book was written, Mrs. Barbour said in a recent interview, for those women whose husbands enjoy hunting and bring home game that ends up in the freezer and stays there for a year or more. "I was in the same boat for sometime until I decided if my husband wanted to hunt, I had better learn how to cook wild game. I ex- perimented and tried different things.

I also learned that the real hunter and sportsman is a conservationist. What they kill, they kill to eat. "Now I can honestly say my family prefers the wild game to other meats. It is not as fat, has a very small amount of cholesterol and is much better nutritionally," she said. Judy's husband, Barry, is a Bay City farmer and rancher, a professional hunter, and a partner in a big game outfitter's firm at Jackson, Wyo.

The couple spends half of the year in Texas and six months in Wyoming. While in Wyoming, Mrs. Barbour does some hunting, a lot of cooking and her share of flying. Now that she has a commercial license, Mrs. Barbour often is the pilot of a twin-engine plane chartered by outdoorsmen for trips into the western wilds.

"Flying in the mountains of Wyoming is a thrill, especially for someone who was frightened when my husband suggested the first time I take the controls. "Now I feel at home in the plane and I cansay to Barry; 'Move over and let me said.
