owned by National General Cinema who also owns Quail Creek Cinema I and II will open the doors on a reissue of Walt Disney's "Bambi" on one screen and "The Other Side of the Mountain" on the other Newman Fun Again as Harper By LANE CiOCKETT Journal Entertainment Editor Two movie fantasies one of the private eye sort and the other unfolding in prehistoric times are currently on the movie scene In this case the private eye beats out the dinasaurs by a 'are margin If you liked Paul Newman as "Harper" nine years ago then there's no reason not to Like him as Harper again this time in "The Drowning Pool" at Quail Creek Cinema An idiot minded adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' "The Land That Time Forgot" is settled in at the Don A Private Eye and as a crooked cop Murray Hamilton as the oil tycoon Melanie Griffith as the sexy offspring Gail Strickland as the tycoon's straying wife and Tony Franciosa as the police chief AN Stuart Rosenberg handles the Tracy Keenan Wynn-Lorenzo Semple Jr Walter Hill script in a straightforward fashion that doesn't particularly excite with visual techniques but that is certainly competent enough to put the film over with some flair and wise enough to concentrate on Newman and let him have his head as the irrepressible Lew Harper The film was shot in and around New Orleans Here a German submarine attacks a British passenger ship during World War I and then a handful of the British crew take the submarine and then the crew of the submarine retake the vessel and then the handful once again take charge and finally they all end up lost and in the land that time forgot All this buildup is simply to get the movie into a position to trot out some so so special effects like towering tyrannosauruses and such with a backdrop of volcanoes primitive men and dripping jungles The dialogue is hilarious enough and even more so when you realize how serious all this seems to be McEnery (so good in "Romeo and gives the film some noticeable acting as the
